What oil to use in your gearbox

What oil do you use in your skyline gearbox?

brands/weight etc would be great

i just put valvoline 75-85 synthetic in mine and it was like water, and now the gears feel a little clunky and you can feel the syncros when you are levering it into gear slowly on cold, NOT HAPPY JAN!

do some people put auto transmission oil in their manual box?

i personally use redline lightweight coz I had a crunching problem (worn synchros)

taylor, auto fluid can temporarily mask major geasrbox problems, but is not the correct grade for manual boxes

penrite xtra-lite 75-80 i think... is very good and smoothe changes hot and cold

You'll find most post 1980 gear box's synchros can operate with quite a low viscosity and most engine oils will work fine. Auto tranny fluid isn't as bad as is it sounds and a 75-80 isn't that thin. You can quite happily add thickners to this oil if you wanna try it.

I put Castrol Syntrax 75-90 in mine and its very good. Now gear changes are silky smooth.... compared to before anyway. Its also really easy to get it back into first when cold.

Dumped the Redline Ultra Lightweight, it was like water, foaming badly and full of a very fine metal power. I've got the Castrol Syntrax in now and its only 40 billionty times better. I'd recommend it to anyone.

how long does the redline last as i've got it in and coming up on major service and wondering if i should take that off the list, only went in about 3000 ago.

the box was good after 500km, then went to shit after 2000km...... i dumped mine after 8000km and the look on my mechanics face wasn't good.....
