If anyone can help with a translation I would appreciate it!!

So I took my S2 R33 in today to the mechanic ( running fine btw ) to get the timing done. Had the car a few months and dont know the history so have been doing some preventative maintainence.

I get a call to say it needs to stay overnight ( pfffffft when doesnt it, nothing is ever straight forward on this car LOL ) He said theyre having trouble getting the harmonic balancer off, its seized onto the cam apparently. He said its pretty common, but mine is taking longer than any other car theyve had.

It didnt sound good to me, so i asked a few questions, he said something about the salt in Japan causing rust blah blah blah

He also said if the cam is damaged the worst case is that I need a new engine. Like WTF? The car was going fine, how the hell do I need a new engine?

Basically Im wondering if hes exaggerating or is this a serious problem I need to worry about?

Thanks guys :)

Sounds like he's exaggerating to be honest

The harmonic balancer doesn't go on the end of the cam, it goes on teh crank, the crank will be fine, unless they manage to somehow break it while removing the balancer, which is pretty hard to

If they have the bolt out, all they need to do is put the bolt back in, then use a crank puller or steering wheel puller, if it's still stuck after that, use a crowbar from behind, works everytime,

do you trust the mechanic? because there are a lot of dodgys out there, harmonic balancer removal usually only takes a few minuets at the most, crack the bolt with an air ratchet or use a breaker bar against the chassis rail, then unscrew the bolt halfway, get the pulley remover on it and away it comes

^^^ +1

There are quite a few mechanics atm who aren't doing much business...

because, money has gone tight > people generally are scimping on services > bigger problems emerge for them to fix.

How well do you know this mechanic of yours?

Had a Dr once that told me I needed a head transplant - so I shot him 'er fired him.

I hope your mechanic is good - if not, shoot him 'er fire him.

Sorry. Getting the two mixed up.

How late is it anyway?

:P

I'm guessing timing, cam belt change?

Because if he's adjusting timing, the balancer doesn't need to come off??

Mine was seized too, spayed wd 40 into shaft hole area, then poured jug o hot water onto balancer and used puller, it came off a lot easier!

Yup, was a timing job, got a new belt since Im sure the other one had never been done :P

He said it was worst case ( the needing a new engine thing ) I do trust them which is why I took it there. Kinda just wanted the opinion of you guys coz I know some are mechanics etc, or just know a helluva lot more than me about engines LOL

I dont know a great deal about harmonic balancers etc, so what I couldnt grasp was how I drove it there fine and if things went sour, I would need a new engine, so yeah, it was more of a "Could this really happen, like is it common, and should I worry!!" LOL

Anyway, happy ending after all. Got the car back and its perfect. Was a really difficult job for them to get the balancer off, one of the hardest ones apparently, bugger!!

So nothing to worry about this time, but Im loving learning about the ins and outs of the engine !!
