I bought one of those underdash neons for my r32 that come with cigarette lighter plug but i want to connect them to car's 12V accessory power supply instead of having them plugged into lighter all the time.

They have a black wire (+12V) and black wire with white stripes (GND). I neved did any electric installations on my r32 before so I'd appreciate some tips... I want to connect them to accessory wire and I dont know which one is it and where do I put GND wire? Should I just cut acc wire and solder black wire onto it?

thanks heaps :(

you can get a switch and place it in the car as i did with my old car.

just get the positive wire and a ground wire and solder it to the switch and get the positive and negative from the neon and solder it to the correct place on the switch and place the switch where ever ya want.

Easiest way is to solder the wires off the cigerette lighter.

The cig lighter has a ring which lights up when you turn on the lights.

Cig light also has ground.

Pull off the plastic stereo shroud so u have access to the back of the lighter. Pull off the cig lighter wire clip and test with a multi-meter which one is ground and which one is power etc

There is a two-wire plug (+ve & earth) for the lighter and a single wire for the light in the socket.

It's important to be careful removing these wires as the single-pin one for the light is fragile and may break.

can you be cheap and not solder the wires together but just wrap it together and cover it with electrical tape?

i ask because i don't have a soldering iron and the only experience i have with soldering is year 10 electronics but didnt seem too hard

Thanks. :banana: Where behind the cigarette plug do I solder though? Just on the casing itself or on the wires?

Cant remember what i did, but you can do something similar to this;

http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2007/11...h-splice-wires/

i actually did something similar with my gps unit... i was sick of having cords/cables n shit all ova my dash so what i did was headed down 2 super cheap :( n bought a cigarette lighter extension lead for like $12. i cut it in half and joined it behind the original cigarette lighter socket. you should be able to easily identify the + and - wiring. black SHOULD always be the return part of the circuit (-). all i did was strip the feed wires to the original cigarette holder with a knife, strip the ends of the new socket i bought, twisted the + to the + and the - to the -, soldered the joins and taped them up. very simple.

i will admit tho i am an electrician :( but seriously, u cant really stuff it up...

i had some neons in my old car. had to cut the lighter ends off and connect em all. i found the other easy spot to connect is on the back of the head unit.

i just hooked the neon positive up the the yellow constant cable off the head unit and earthed it in the same spot as i earthed the head unit.

then drilled a hole in the back of that plastic fill in section you buy wen you change from double din to single and screwed the switch in there. nice and hidden plus easily accesible!

i'm wiring lighting for my boost gauge

for the positive i'm goin to use the light for the cigarette socket

and was wondering for the ground if i can use the earth on the actual cigarette heating part?

but was also thinking bout putting the earth under one of the nuts on the gearboot?

taks.

yes, easiest way to do earth, is to put it under a bolt that is connected to an unpainted part of the chassis.

as to the 'do i have to solder' thing. u can crimp them, but u still have to cut the wire, strip it and then crimp it up.

easiest way ive found...if u have the room is to get inline crimps. soooo much easier

all u do is slip it over the wires, and push down. and a piece of steel slices into the wires, creating a connection

Ive been thinking about the same idea;

buy one of these cig lighter extensions;

http://jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PP...=&SUBCATID=

Break up the connector, hardwire it behind the factory cig lighter and feed the new cig lighter into the glove box :)

Ok ive bought some neons aswell.

4 Neons in total.

Front - Drivers and Passengers footwell.

Back - Underneath Seats, for Passenger foot area.

Now all 4 neon's Positives will be soldered to one peice of wire which is going to be my positive. All 4 Neon's Negatives are going to be soldered to one peice of wire which will act as the negative.

Now i have 1 Positive and 1 Negative wire.

These are going to be soldered to the Positive and Negative terminal on the Switch.

To provide power to the switch, i will solder a peice of wire from the switch to the ACC wire on my Cig Lighter ( the light one )

To provide the negative, a peice of wire will be soldered from the switch to the ground/negative for the Car Lighter ( Light ).

Is this the right way to wire my neons ?

I just want to clarify this because i do not want to fry my electricals lol.

MRXTCZ

depends how you want them to work..

when i was in "night club in my car stage" in my VT.. i had three switches.. one for inside neons.. one for front washers/wipers.. one for front/underneath..

i hooked the +ve's to the switch (crimped and soldered to a female plug) which slips straight onto switch (or take off if wanted) .. i hooked the earth to a screw under the dash (or an earth wire head unit black wire, cig lighter) then i ran wire out of fuse box to a 15A fuse and then down to the switch.. that way any problems and the fuse blows hence this won't fry the electrics.. and i can turn power on and off to neons when i wished..

    • I can't agree. If we hadn't all been brought up with the noise caused by the inefficiency of an ICE, no-one would actually ask for all that. An EV is like any other car, it just goes better.
    • 2 more things I have to work out Easy one first...can anyone describe how to pull the fuel pump and sender from a 33? I can feel there is some sort of mount and clips but don't have a manual and don't know the trick......if not I'll spend some quality time in the boot witha lighter tomorrow. Second question is harder.  He had changed the upper plenum to a plazmaman but clearly got to a point with the vacuum hoses where he said "f**k it, I'm going inside for a beer" and never came back to that job because it was a mess. Am I right to think that I need: 1. Pre throttle (16mm nipple on inlet) to AAC's main 20mm fitting as the main pre throttle feed 2. ACC has a second 13m outlet joined to that 20mm fitting which I think is the pre throttle air supply for the cold start valve? 3. Cold start valve's outlet fitting then goes to Plenum (to bypass throttle?) There is some adapter on the back of the ACC with 2 fittings (13mm and 10mm), do I run the 10mm through a 1 way valve to the Brake Booster (4) and the 13mm back to a 13mm nipple on the Plenum as the Idle control (5)? 6. Run a 6mm vacuum line from the Turbosmart BOV to the Plenum? 7. Run a 5mm vacuum line from the Fuel Pressure Reg to the Plenum? 8. Run a 5mm vacuum line from the Turbosmart Boost controller to the Plenum? (Wastegate already has a pre turbo pressure source running to the solenoid then the wastegate on the other side of the bay)  Any help appreciated, the GTR is quite different setup and while the Stagea also has FFP it is different again. (And no Dose, I'm not pissing it all off and putting a ethrottle on it....)
    • OK, onto some questions to try and speed up the process a little. Does anyone know what core this Garret is? I know it is a high flowed standard turbo but nothing else about it. Tag says OK 0169J - 446179-5032 Same question for the injectors, I don't know what they flow and ideally can work it out before it hits the dyno, they are a mustard yellow side feed
    • Quick side trip into the engine externals, alternator and PS were in place including tensioned belts, but the PS was dry (my guess is he had the steering rack reco-ed). Filled it up with Transmax Z but it will need more bleeding once the engine is running no doubt. BTW I've said before, I don't know what kind of soft animals you have in the city, but out here they breed the rats tough. I bet they were disappointed when they tasted synthetic ATF.... Coilpacks are Splitfires with a factory loom in reasonable condition. I didn't pull one put I bet the spark plugs are new as its a new engine
    • Onto intake pressure test. I have a Raceworks (damn brand thieves!) pressure test adapter that lets you apply pressure through a standard tyre valve and comes with a pressure gauge.....I just blocked off the other end immediately before the throttle body. Applied 30psi....and the turbo intake immediately popped off with a bang. Sorted that but it was still leaking, turns out there is a pinhole leak at the BOV adapter that I'll have to find a local place to TIG up. I'm sure it makes SFA difference with such a small leak but I want it to be right. Everything else up to the throttle body was good. Also cleaned and oiled the KNX cone filter, and this is the AFM if anyone can identify it (car runs a PowerFC)
