hey i'm planning on doin some track days soon at QR, and my mechanic said that i should consider puting a baffle in.

he said its borderline requirement for street tires/brakes, but better safe then sorry

i haven't come across this before, and considering its a fairly big job puting one in i'd like to hear some opinions.

probably a good idea. trust you mechanic as this is what he does for a living. he, will end up getting a build out of it if you dont do it so either way he is getting work. rather spend the $1000 fitting the sump than a couple of grand re-building engine and still having to buy sump. not hard to replace sump in the car.

very true^^

with the gtr the engine has to come out to do the sump, probably worth doin a N1 oil+water pump at the same time yeah?

or the alternative is to get a dedicated track car and work that, to save the wear and tear on my streeter

This has been dealt with at length a number of times. Maybe try a search.

But in the meantime some things you may like to think about.

1. You need to remove the motor to fit sump baffles.

2. If you upgrade the oil pump you may as well fit an oil restrictor to the head.

3. To fit an oil restrictor you need to remove the head.

4. If you are doing that you may aswell rebuild the thing......

But he last. most important point:

If you overfill the sump with oil you will not suffer from oil surge & the motor will be fine.

i agree with djr81 once the engine is out all sorts of things to consider.

if you keep a good close eye on oil levels(overfull) , then you should not have a problem, except maybe some breathing depending on mods.

keep a good eye on engine oil temp and coolant temp though!!

my advice. spend the money on a top quality oil cooler kit. use good oil (motul chrono is hard to toss) and maybe overfill a little (personally I think 1l is too much, but it's up to you). also get a decent oil pressure guage with warning and recording feature (this way you can start it recording, do 2 laps, come in and play it back and watch to see if and when oil pressure drops it shoul be above about 4 bar for 90% of the lap).

my logic is those things will be needed with or without a built motor so doing them no does not cost you anything. I figure if you are running under 300awkw you 'should' be ok.

the other guys are right too, given the big labour cost in removing and re-fitting an engine it makes sense to do it along with lots of other gear which really blows out the cost.

edit: your mechanic is spot on though, sump baffles are a very good idea in any track driven GTR but the cost is just a little bit prohibitive.

I've just gone through the same condundrum. I run 300RWKW and have just done a track day at Phillip Island. I spoke at length with my mechanic who said the sump baffle is a big job and not necessary for what I'm doing (sprint work / track days / fairly std brakes and R specs). I'd still like one though, but perhaps next time the engine is out (not soon I hope)

They changed my oil and overfilled my sump by 500ml. I run an oil cooler and have a large after market alu radiator. My main bearnings are machined for extra oil flow around them too.

It pulled like a train all day and the temp gauge never moved - and I never lost oil pressure. The car came home happy.

p.s. I have my beautiful new engine as the last one went pop at a track day, so there is danger without adequate precautions. The track is a stressful place.

I use Defi BF oil pressure gauge. very good. since I have the defi BF oil pres, oil temp, boost and fuel pres. they are very useful. You can adjust the warning level for each gauge, and there is a buzzer and light for each warning. and it can record the movement of all gauges. after 2 laps I pull in and hit play. you can tell when you are on the brakes or cornering as the car is off boost, pay close attention to oil pressure in these moments to ensure it didn't drop too much. if all is well go out and enjoy. I also run a big trust oil cooler and the filter mount it comes with has lots of handy points to install the defi sensors. they are a snack to install DIY too if you like.

Unfortunately the factory nissan guages are poor at the best of times. you can purchase an oil pressure warning light and sender that will come on at 30psi. if this comes on when your up it you have a bit of time to get out of it and reduce damage. by the time your factory guage reads and the 0psi light comes on its too late.

i'm not really a "guage" person, they look good tho :D

the factory gauge is rubbish. it's an idiot gauge. it's very slow to react (so as not to alarm the average joe) and not very accurate either. if you install a proper gauge you will be shocked at how rapidly oil pressure varies with revs (as it should since the pump speed is directly related to engine RPM). it moves about the same speed as your tacho! if you don't want gauges the warning light is an option, or some other kind of data logging, but the simplest solution I found was just fit a proper oil pressure guage.

i like the look of the apexi EL2 guages, they are run from a controller like the defi's, and have record, replay, warning system.

i just think it'll look a bit "VN bogan" having guages everywhere.

please post some pics of your set up, i'd love to be proved wrong

EDIT: whats up with all the harness and sensor options? both apexi and defi have a massive list of options, i would assume they're for the digital display unit?? OR do i have to buy the guage AND the harness?

if you have a big f-off oil coller over fill 500ml

if you dont ive run up to 2 litres more (wise man once said the notch in the dip stick.. that stops all surge i find defi proven)

never spun a bearing

but im not like the rest of these clowns on here.... i generally dont rev the old girl abouve 7500 at the track

i would add more if your reving harder and dont have restrictors

take 500 mls of the above instructions if your car is a gts and rwd

ohhh as for quality oil in a 15 year old rb26

lol

castrol magnateck....... thick and creamy for those old engines that need some extra seal... ( specilly if its blowing the dipstick out... fancy oil will just end in death...... thicker oil= 50,000 km more track thrashing before a rebuild)

fancy oil for your farken new built motor beer bitch!

yeah he thrashes the hell out of it all right. right hand left hand, he's an animal. don't know if I'd call it a machine though, more like a little pistola....

usual suspect: for the defi's you don't need anything except the guage, and 1 controller. every guage comes with the sensor you need and the wiring you need.

this was the temp mounting. it's a bit average but was good enough for a while. I have a better set-up now, but not pics handy. the big shift light type thing is the oil pres warning light, set so it shines straight into my face! gauges are oil pres, oil temp, boost, fuel pres.

    • Yeah, my moulds and seals are 32 years old now. I think I will continue to not use a pressure washer on it.
    • I hear the old "I'd never use a pressure washer on my motorbike" BS in the dirtbike community too.  The only people that have had a problem from using a pressure washer on anything are the people that aren't using them properly.  If you hold the wand any more than 45 cms away from pretty much anything (radiators, wiring connectors, paint, etc) you aren't going to cause any damage.  We've had detailers wreck moulds and seals on cars at work before and the only reason why is they held the pressure washer too close and on the one spot for too long.  If you have 5% more brain power than a detailer then you know not to not do that and you'll never have a problem.
    • I'm pretty much healed up post surgery so I spent another almost full day out in the shed re-arranging everything to make room for all of the shit that I've taken off the car.  I need to get everything off the floor and away from the car for when I start making a massive mess stripping off the remaining body deadener and then for the the painting process.  Almost got the shed to a point now where I feel I can actually start working on the car again (clean shed clean mind or something!).  Almost 11 years of accumulated car parts, building supplies, tools, junk, etc have taken a long time to get in some sort of order again!  Most stuff is now boxed up and in the back shed if it's not car related.  Most people would still be horrified walking into my shed but it's significantly better than it was before!   For those that saw my separate post the other day, yeah I ordered one.... This version- I convinced myself to stop being a clown, wake up to yourself and realise it will take you 5 weeks to make one by which stage you're over working on the car again...  Maybe I am getting on top of my "mental ailments" and making smarter choices.... $1450 delivered which will take my miserable half-dutch arse a few days to get over having spent that much!  If I don't have a use for it straight away after my car is off it I might even see if there is a "rental market" for them.  See if anyone wants to hire it for a period of time.  $25 a week or something like that.  I'll worry about that when my car is actually ready to come off it though as that might be a while away!! There's now no excuses now for not ending up with an underside you could eat off! Away for kids sport the next few weekends so hopefully can get the rotisserie assembled ready to go for the car to go straight on it the next available weekend.    
    • I always use my Karcher, but it's only a little one that I picked up from Supercheap  The only issue I ever had with a pressure washer was when I was a kid cleaning coaches, they had a hi-po industrial sized petrol jobbie that would strip paint if you got to close I saying this, we have a fairly high power washer at work with a diesel powered heater that sprays water at about 60°c, it works great for removing old wax and road grime on the underbody after some foam cannon action, albeit from a "stand off" distance of a few feet
