Hey everyone,

Just wondering if i can bother you fine SAU's with a quick question. I recently just got a cheap 2nd hand PC foy my bedroom (the main pc is getting too full of my bros crap haha) mainly to do uni work, for the net and the odd movie maker clip

Anyway i cant get the usb ports to work correctly. I plug something in, i recognises it, then it just locks the pc up, no keyboard no mouse, nothing. I've tried 2 differnt thumb drives, and my external hdd and it all does the same thing. All this stuff works fine on my other pc, and checked driver version for the usb driver and its exactly the same as my other pc (so its not the driver). I've uninstalled it and reinstalled the driver just in case but no good.

Im not that good with pc's anymore, so i thought i would see if any of you had any idea what was causing the problem. I had a quick search on the net and it seems that its a pretty common problem and most recommend getting a usb hub that slots into a pci port, but dunno....

I quickly undid the case and it has the main usb ports directly on the motherboard (they are at the back of the case), and i have 2 usb ports for easy access at the front of the case, and there are wires that connect the front bit to the motherboard, but it all looks connected and fine.

Some people said that if the device draws too much current it can lock up the pc, but my external hdd doesnt use the usb power (it has a seperate 240v connection), so it can't that either.

So should i get a pci port usb hub or is there an reason for it locking up?

/essay :D

Thanks for any help

Steve

open up Computer Management and go to the Disk Management tab

Unplug all other USB connected devices including KB/M if they are USB

Plug in a USB key and see if computer management brings up another drive

If it does but still freezes your on your own, PCI slot USB controller is an option

That one costs $18

cheers for the reply

what do you mean by computer managment? i cant find anything along the lines of that in control panel.

I've been going into control panel-system-hardware-device manager

and it shows the following under the usb tab:

5x root hub

5x Via rev or later USV universial host controller

1x via USB enhanced host controller

all show up fine, no conflecting issues and the computer finds no faults

Also theres no usb ports being used (mouse and keyboard have there proper slots), i dont mind buy a pci usb slot but i kinda want to know why its doing it haha

Are you actually getting a Windows error or is it just freezing? Does the screen go black or blue?

Could it be as simple as having the most up to date drivers?

Just freezes, mouse doesnt move and no keyboard actions work (ie ctr alt dlt, alt f4 etc)

Doesnt go black or blue screen and no error messages.

I bought a pci card off ebay for $10delivered (comes with cd driver), so i'll see if that fixes it.

I originally thought it was the driver since it said it was a 2002 version, but my other computer runs the exact same driver without any problems. The pc thats having the problems isnt hooked to the net atm so its hard to get updates, but if there was another update i would of thought my main computer would be running it.

right click My Computer

select Manage (you get Computer Management)

select Disk Management

Plug in a USB key

Also I notice you have a motherboard with a VIA chipset which could be the issue

Download the 1.10 filter patch from here and see what that does

    • Plan on the day will be to park trackside. Depending on space availability we will try put a small shade tent and a few of the cars on top of the hill inside turn 3, this is an easy to get to parking area with views of Turn 2, Turn 3, Turn 4 and Turn 5 and limited other pieces of the view around the track. IMPORTANT NOTE! One consideration from previous years is from memory the trackside parking sells out before the admission tickets, for that reason I encourage anyone planning on coming to buy tickets for parking now via the official website; https://www.worldtimeattack.com/ The type of parking you are looking for is 2 Day Park & View (Access Around Venue) Vehicle Pass Only Please note this does not include admission to the event itself, remember to grab that also, and kids under 12 get in for free!
