United petrol stations have a performance petrol that contains ethanol but has a higher then 98 octane rating then most servo premiums.

Shell also has V-POWER racing which is 100 octane and contains 5% ethanol.

my question is is this octane petrol bad for a Non Turbo, skyline?

well i have heard that ethanol based fuels in the long run can rust fuel lines etc thats about it thou. Also another thing i have heard that if u use a much higher octane fuel then what the car was made for u can burn the valves??

i have used united boost 98 ( with 5% ethanol) in my rb20det for the last 3 years i have owned my car and yet to have any problems with the fuel

it actually runs better than bp 98 ive noticed, bp gives it a rough idle and sorta rough drive through the rev range

however yet without a problem i will still use this in my car

this has been covered to death

using higher octane fuel is fine

without a retune you wont get any gains other than it acting as a detonation killer

you wont gain any power without a retune

ie: putting 100ron in a stock GTST will give zero, unless you tune for it

but it will take away knocking if you do get some with normal 98 on your current setup

ethanol in a std car is fine it wont do any harm or melt your fuel lines etc

ive been using shell vpower racing 100ron for about 5 months (ish) now and its fine

i havent changed a single thing, std GTR pump, std lines, std injetors etc

My car is stock and at the last RE Customs Dyno day I got close to 150kWs and I'm sure I had been using the United 98 for at least a few weeks leading up to that... ...I had a discount card that a mate had given me and the one in Springvale is right next to my office...

Since then, when I had my last service, I was back down to around 140kWs and I've been using Caltex 98... ...Moneys been a little tight with the cutback of hours at work and the cost of fuel... ...So it is shopping dockets for me at the moment...

I doubt the fuel is the only reason for the drop in power... ...but it could be a factor...

ethanol is fine

do you honestly think shell could sell it as a std available product to every day mum and dads if it melted fuel lines and caused your fuel pump to explode?

of course not, it would be the biggest law suit and class action in australia

with a tune, is there much to be gained? or are we talking like 5rwkw

From what I remember, a few years back HPI magazine had one of their cars re tuned for ethanol based fuel.

Again from what I remember, they got around 20kw gain and more torque. Does anyone else remember this?

If you get more power with a cheaper fuel, why not move to it?

Wont do anything in the short term if you only use it once or twice here and there, although in the long run it could rust fuel lines.

A mate of mine with a NA MK4 Supra has had the problem wouldn't recommend using it on a regular basis

well thats just your opinion..

it could not be souly responsible for it, there are other factors that may have obviously contributed. All i am saying is i dont believe its wise to be running this fuel consistently in a NA. Why not just run it on normal unleaded and you will have no drama's

    • Right, its been a while for updating this car, but I made some small but important progress today. In the end I bought an Ecutek dongle from the Australian distributor Tunehouse (for local hardware support) but have gone with a remote tune from Racebox in the US (because they have done millions of these, and I could not find any tuner where I could access the tune anyway as they are all password locked). The App is reasonably easy to work with, but the PC software reminds me of Haltech's ECU Manager that you need to use with the Plat Pro ECUs, it is a nightmare.  Anyway, I sent the details over, got back a tune file and a request for data logs. I finally got a chance to access a private test track today as they want redline logs in 3rd and 4th, and have sent them back for the first round of reviews. The main difference in the tune is going from 1.0 (stock) to 1.3 bar (19psi), although I'm sure is a lot of other stuff in the background. Keeping in mind this is a dead stock car with 125,000klm, this is what the App's performance test claimed: Before After Interesting to note that both 400m tests had the same terminal speed (158klm/h) but different ETs. And no, the speed limiter seems to be higher than that at 186kl/h. Summary of the key logged parameters for the 3rd and 4th gear runs were: Those little turbos were certainly whizzing at 200,000rpm+.  Also I'm really not that excited about oil pressure 55psi at redline so I think I'll go thicker than 5w30 (nissan recommend 0w20....) and see if that improves it. Other than that (and the big boost spike....) everything looks good as a start to me.
    • Just one more post to show the final result and the original "janky" solution for a laugh. Everything feels really tight and no wobbling at all, very pleased 🙂

    • The hot exhaust light will come on not from just the cat being blocked, but it's just a temp sensor, and it's designed to warn you to not do things like park in long grass.   If you've been pushing the motor a bit, it can cause the light to come on.   Second if the cat is rattling, I'd suspect it's not blocked, but instead falling apart inside.   The easiest "fix" until you can get a cat put back in, is to unbolt your one, bash the rest of the insides out, and then bolt it back in.   For a daily driver/street car, I am in agreeance of put a cat in the car. If it were race car I wouldn't care if it were removed.
