R33 Running Sluggish At Full Throttle

I just bought an 95 R33. And i found that under boost it would jolt a few times then pickup. I decided to change the plugs and noticed there were 3 different types of plugs. a few colder plugs, iridium and copper ones.... anyway i replaced them with std NGK .8mm gaped copper plugs. and now i have a problem where if i i rev out a gear at 3/4 throttle it pulls pretty hard, as soon as i go full throttle you can tell the car just loses power. Can anyone please tell me any idea's or anything to look into to try troubleshoot this problem?

Thank You

what plugs are you running? you would need BCPR6ES. could be wrong temp.

I think there BCPR6 i could be wrong though. What does the ES stand for?

how much boost, and list your mods.

I have a hunch that you are hitting the Rich and retard.

To save us all time also, do a search on "rich and retard"

you'll see millions of posts that could solve your problem

The plugs i got sold are BKR6E Should these be ok?

The car is a S1 R33

It is running 10psi and has forged pistons.

Im going to put a boost guage on today to find out exactly how much is going through it and if it's spiking, It has a manual turbosmart bleed valve (i think)

I changed the spark plugs and also changed the fuel filter (i think that was the cause of the problem) and last night i drove it and it went amazing. I was really happy. Then this morning it was -4 and i drive it and it just kept hesitating. Could the air have just been too cold and made the car run lean? Or does any one have any idea's?

could be coilpacks, sometimes putting new plugs in will fix it for a few days, then the problem comes back.

is it misfiring? some owners are unsure what misfiring is which makes internet diagnosis very hard..

It's hard to explane. it's like it chokes for a sec then picks up.

I had the same problem a few months back, changed spark plugs and it helped for about 20 mins of driving, i then changed my fuel filter and it was absolutly filthy. I found that i got a dodgy tank of fuel (BP deer park western hwy), i siphoned out the tank and filled up with new juice and it went like a rocket again. I know u haved changed the filter but what about the petrol? Just throwing my 2 cents in.

Yea im really confused. because today when i drove it it was playing up. parked it for 20 minutes. kept driving and it flew with no problems. I got the mixtures checked quickly and they said it's running slightly lean on idle. So im going to check fuel pressure and make sure thats ok. but tonight i took it for a quick drive after changing the oil and pulling out the bleed valve. it was running about 7psi and reved cleanly with no hessitations or anything like that.......

Any more idea's?

Hey guys, long time lurker first time poster.

Ive just been through a similar problem, r33 s1 with a missfire problem and this is what i found.

When i increased the boost to around 12psi, there was the usual R&R/missfire problem. Changed plugs, got safc and tune but it was the coilpacks that fixed it in the end.

Now she runs well EXCEPT for high boost under load at low rpm, ie 12psi @ 2500-3000 rpm in a high gear. The ratios are still ok but it feels like it is hesitating or not picking up like it should. The only thing i can think of is that when the ecu sees the high airflow corresponding to 12psi when it was expecting the airflow corresponding to 5psi it adds a lot of retardation.

Therefore the stock ecu is the problem at high boost low rpm. Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone with a pfc have this problem?

I spoke to soon. Even at std boost it has that problem. I cleaned out my AFM but that hasn't fixed the problem. I noticed on the plugs i took out that around the face near the thread it was black which is normal but on the part where is spark arc's to it was covered in white.... is this normal?

Today my car just decided to stall when i pulled up at a give way sign. started up again and put my foot down to move off....stalled again. i was finally able to drive it into a car park and stop. left it for about an hour and drive it again, this time it almost stalled a few times. then i drive it again tonight and it ran perfectally...... God i hope i can find this problem soon.

Yea i have a aftermarket bov. i just checked the fuel pressure. with the car running and the vac line off it's around 41psi. with the vac line on it is stable at 34.5psi if you rev the car it settles on 36psi for a sec then drops to 34.5psi. Does this all sound fine?

    • There's probably an underlying issue with the A/C system too. I recently fixed mine, now it's fully control by the Haltech and car's factory HVAC controller  Have a squiz here:
    • And by the way, I've also checked the ECU diagnostic numerous times and got a bad O2 sensor code and initially an Ignition Primary code, which is why I replaced the O2 sensor and all the ignition components (coil packa, plug and loom). No codes have been coming up lately despite the ongoing issue.
    • Hey pber13, unfortunately still no luck. At this point the following has been done with little or no success: - Spark plugs replaced, gapped to 0.8mm - Splitfire coilpacks installed to replace originals - Replaced Ignition Coil/Coilpack harness with a new genuine nissan one - New fuel filter - Replaced AFM/MAF sensor - Injectors have been thoroughly cleaned with an online flush (without removing) - Upper engine and inlet decarbed - blew tons of black smoke out, cleared the carbon deposits from the top of the engine and exhaust.  - IACV removed and thoroughly cleaned with carburettor cleaner - O2 sensor replaced with new and genuine one -  Smoke test revealed no vacuum leaks - Healthy compression test of 160psi across all 6 cylinders Overall the car does run a lot smoother now, no backfires between gear shifts like it did originally... but the rough idle when warmed up is still there. It may not even be a misfire but simply a rough idle. Seems crazy to me that so many people have had this issue and seemingly no one has gotten to the bottom of it, or at least never bothered to post if they did! Hope you have more luck than I did pber13, I'm at a point now where I'm just going to try to ignore it unless it gets worse. Would love to fix it but I've genuinely run out of ideas of what it could be.
    • I got the full frenchys kit too. Really awesome kit. Easy to install my only complaint was the hardlines I think could be routed differently (I modified mine) but I realise the kit needs to suit multiple applications. This was the hard lines before I modified them. They were touching the wastegate pipe. I ended up reducing the distance between firewall and first bend. The made it so they tucked along the frame rail.
    • Deeve, I don't suppose that you've made any progress on this? My Stagea has the exact same problem, and just like you, I've read through as much as I can online, with no real progress. My car isn't throwing any codes at all, which is a little frustrating. I've changed plugs, checked the wiring and harness. A new MAF gets here next week, but I'm not hopeful it will solve the issue.
