Old Petrol - Octane Reduction

Hi all tried a search couldnt find anything...

Just wandering, i know quite a few people on the forum only use there cars as weekenders (R34 GT-Rs etc).

The thing i want to know is if the car is driven only on the weekends the time for a full tank of fuel to be used could be like 2-3 months or so..

The question being wuldnt the petrol go off or have a reduced amount of octane within it which would meen driving the car at full pelt would not be reccomended?

hey mate. ive been using mine solely as a weekender for about 3 months now.

i go thru a full tank every weekend EASY!. (thats y its not a daily).

Wow a full tank on just a weekend thats alot.

Yer but usually the ideal environment conditions cannot always be met, winter for example.

Well i have a mate who has a TT supra RZ and uses it as his weekender i asked him about what he does and he rekons he will refill the tank roughly once every 2 months.

Like said in the article above; "you can see that tanks which are not emptied and refilled regularly can create operational problems"

So I'm thinking if you have fuel sitting in the car for a few months and are boosting it with 2 month old fuel that it wouldn't be healthy though..

If your worried, dont fill the tank.

Just 1/4 fill it, and then add $15 everytime you take it out

Yer that would be the easiest solution but i'm not really after one haha.

Just want to know if its doing any harm to the car to be running old fuel or if im just wierd for thinking it haha

Tell him to not fill the tank up if he knows he's not going to use it all, then. Those triggers on the pump aren't there just to work your hand out for a better grip while masturbating - if you let them go then fuel stops flowing.

Tell him to go buy a jerry can. When he plans on driving the car he can take his daily down to the petrol station, fill that up, and pour it into the Stupra. 20L should give him enough range for what he wants to do if he only uses a tank every 2 months, or at least enough petrol to drive it to a petrol station to fill it up if he plans on burning through more.

and a full tank will leave less? are you looking for an exact number of litres to put in your tank? there probably is an answer but i dont think anyones anal enough to figure it out.

i dont see anything wrong with ash's suggestion. fill it up abit whenever you drive it.

once again im not after a solution.

just wanting to know if it will do any damage, boosting around with 2 month old fuel

^ really? Mine had been sitting for just over a month, with roughly a quarter tank of fuel. When it came off the road, it was running sweet, with no issues from idle to redline at any throttle. I got it back on the road the other day and went for a drive, and it pinged at 3500rpm in third, at only about 5psi of boost. Nothing has been changed except for the fuel is a month and a half old.

If your car has been sitting for any length of time with the same fuel, I wouldn't be using boost until you can put fresh stuff in. Sure it *might* not be a problem, but better than finding out the hard way with a hole in the block after a big hit of detonation.

Ive always been interested in this discussion, my gtr always must be jump started as i dont drive it very often and when i do i dont drive enough to charge the battery so my petrol right now is about a month old and i still have about half a tank.

The fuels are carbon based and are high octane because they are complex structures. Anything organic will break down over time.

Someone reminded me once that petrol dosent come straight from the refiners to the pump and might be in transit for a while so does that contribute to the period?

Im not keen on refilling only 20bux at a time as its f*kn embarrasing to jump start a gtr in front of everyone at the petrol station lolz. Anyways this wednesday im getting a new dry cell battery so i wont have that problem.

New idea! I will buy some race fuel and add about 5 litres per 20-30litres of fuel which will raise up the octane quite a few points and allow me greater storage life. Hmmmm???

Not really mate, I mean i will go up to around 5000rpm but try to just cruise.

Autobarn quoted me 70bux for 20litres of 110octane fuel so it seems like a good idea and plus if i tune my car on 98oct then it will provide extra protection from detonation on hot days.

I posted another thread on the test results of octane booster by martini and it looked promising as well.

Mine sat around for a month waiting for a new turbo then when the turbo was put on it was put on the dyno with the same fuel to run 260kw, no unusual knock but probably not the best idea however i am lazy and your not the boss of me.

Ok well what do you believe would be the safest amount of time to boost with fuel, if you kind of get what im saying.

As in say u fill up your tank from dry and u dont drive the car much how long (weeks or days) will it be safe to boost before you have to worry about off fuel??

hmmm well I have a power fc so what i do it put the hand controller on my lap (lolz that kinda sounds diiiirty)

and everytime i want to give it a squirt i reach down and check the knocks. If all is good i check again a few times at round 5000rpm then im all good.

Is your car in a lock up garage? Take the battery out of the car and/or leave it on a trickle charger.

I have a mate who just leaves a trickle charger attached to the mains and the ultra-small battery sitting in the car, so on the rare occasions when he drives it he just unplugs the trickle charger and off he goes.
