Hi guys, been thinking of buying a PFC for my ER34 NEO with auto tranny. Recently I came across an article which says that the PFC is not ideal for auto tranny because of the computer logic being controlled by the computer or something along that line.

"PowerFC only supports manual cars (excluding Toyota). It will work on an automatic car however it will not handle gear changes and simply keep the throttle nailed during a gear change. This will result in jerky gear changes and stress placed on the gearbox. The factory ECU during a gear change will communicate with the auto box and drop timing, ignition to ensure a smooth change. For those wishing to use PowerFC with auto you should consider a mechanical auto gearbox instead of an electronic. The PowerFC should work fine with a mechanical gearbox such as power glide, transbreak etc.

This is because the mainstream ECU's in Nissan etc rely on the main cars' ECU for gear logic change control and functions. Cars such as the Toyota have a seperate ECU for the gearbox change logic and control so it's not affected. Apexi chose not to port the Automatic gearbox logic code (as its very long and complex) into the PowerFC because I suspect they found its simply not worth it & too complicated. You can buy an Automatic PowerFC for a Toyota Chaser for example and it has auto logic control under SETTING, you can set the shiftmap, ramp up speeds etc as it has the code to interact with the Toyota AUTO ECU that is seperate to the main ecu. So in summary - Auto PowerFC's exist & work but only for Toyota. We have seen quiet a few Auto R33 Skylines with manual PowerFCs - some report they work fine etc and there is no difference - do so at your own risk. Now, is there anyone out there with an auto tranny using pfc on the neo? and is there any trouble with gear changing or any other problems? As this article seems to be impressive and detailed thus i wish to get more feedback/advice from you guys before going with the decision to get the PFC.

I currently have a FMIC, 3in catback, BOV, airfilter, dump pipe and 108ks if that matters. And sorry for the long post. :)

It can be done, a few of the stagea guys are running PFC's in their cars, (stageas are 97% auto's) but it usually done with a shift kit added to the trans. The only real issue is that the std ecu actually disrupts the engine ignition during gear changes to soften up the shifts so they don't have to be done under full hydraulic pressure (hence the comment about changes being made too harsh with the PFC) and the PFC has no way of emulating this, while it works, it will drastically reduce the life of your gearbox - just the ticket if you are planning on a manual conversion...

on neo engine cars, skyline or stagea, the auto computer is built into the standard ecu. so if you change the std ecu for a PFC the auto wont work, unless you fully manualise the auto. R33's i believe have a separate ecu to controll the auto, so they can get away with changing the std ecu for a PFC if they do abit of work to the auto ie: shiftkit.

hey dale. do you know if the auto ecu will do this still if a manual conversion has been done? (sorry to hijack thread)

Um,. AFAIK its not an issue if you have a manual conversion. There will be no signal from the trans telling it when to break ignition so I very much doubt it. The only KNOWN issue I am aware of, only concerns the R34 GTt PFC and you need to perform the "secret squirrel tweak" to stop the traction control output triggering the check engine light.

been busy with my new job thats why i havent been logging in. hmm, so its true that its not advisable to have a pfc for auto tranny aye, and having would means getting ready to have a manual gearbox. hmm... ok, looks like i cant have it now cos my gf has an auto license and we would get another car after we buy a house next year... hope to read up more and hear more advice as well... :D

    • I just got to work and skimmed through 61508 and 61511. I was surprised the CSA adopted both, but neither are enforced. To recap what I read, it states that in a perfect world, they should be segregated but they acknowledge that this is not industry standard and clearly mention that they allow mixing of safety and non-safety. 61511 also mentions software segregation like AB does in their safety PLC's.   Now if only I could go back to control, let alone safety over comms. In my current line of work, we're only allowed monitoring and basic control over comms. Everything critical must still be hard wired as much as possible. 
    • I've unfortunately never been as they're on the complete other side of the continent and another country that isn't currently letting us in as easily as they use to. I even heard their stop signs over there actually say "Stop" instead of "Arret". If I decided to trek the 48h drive, I wouldn't know when or where to stop haha. Whenever I order parts from UP Garage, I order from Japan as it's cheaper. Same with GKTech... oddly enough, it's cheaper shipped from Australia then it is the US.  UP Garage Japan operates their US leg though, unlike Tomei. If Tomei JPN had the power to close down Tomei USA, I'm sure it would be done in a day. They're two completely separate entities. Tomei JPN messed up somewhere originally agreeing to its creation and got sacked big time. 
    • I asked someone about this and he told me about the Audi 1.8T engine. But I think it would be difficult to swap
    • I don't know that machine specifically, but I'd personally go for something with a little more kick than 130amp. Around up to 180 would be good. At the 6mm range, you're really pushing the machine hard and don't have a long period you can run for with out needing to give it a rest. Lots of MIG machines come with a regulator and hose. A lot will come with a starter roll of wire too, but it isn't too expensive to buy. I'd recommend NOT buying a massive roll too, as you don't want it sitting around FOREVER in the machine between uses and potentially going to shit. For thin sheet metal, get a roll of 0.6mm if you're doing over 3mm and above, switch over to 0.8mm wire. Even by 2mm you'd probably really want to switch. As for gas battle, it's all swap and go style now. You'll pay a bottle deposit, and then X amount to swap for a full one. I think it's like $200 or $300 for a D Size bottle upfront as "deposit", and like $110 to $150 per swap. My D size CO2/argon bottle lasts a fair bit of welding on the MIG. And I run an E size bottle on the TIG. For DIY MIG, stick with a D size bottle. If you really start to get into a LOT of welding and doing it really regularly, then upgrade. If you're like most DIY car guys, one D bottle will last you 2 or 3 years easily. I think I've been on my current bottle about 5 years. It is starting to get low, but I've been smashing it a lot more the last 6 months.
    • SR20s came with cars like the Bluebird and Primera, but the RB20 never came. The ones in Turkey were either brought in specially or from abroad. That's why RBs aren't as common as SRs. And if a part breaks or I need to replace it when doing maintenance, it's harder to find parts for RBs.
