hey guys

hopefully someone can help me out

was driving home just now and it was raining

put my foot down a bit and hit the limiter in second and when i changed to third and tried to keep driving at a normal pace

i hear a high pitched whistling noise and i cant make the car rev over 2000 rpm in any gear

i was thinking that i had blown off a pipe somewhere but when i got it home into the shed there are no pipes coming off

and when i rev it i can hear the high pitched noise coming from the pod filter

but on idle the car sounds normal, no metal sounds to indicate a turbine wheel etc

and theres no black smoke when i rev it

any one have an idea?

cheers

all the cooler pipes are on and theres no leaks

sadly it is the turbo

had a look today

the intake wheels bearing is stuffed

the turbo still spins but doesnt make much pressure

i took the cooler pipe off just before the cross over pipe and can feel it blowing air through and can hear the sound from the turbo echoing up the pipe

the car will rev if its in neutral but wont move properly when under load

looks like its new turbo time

anyone have a turbo i can buy?

need a direct swap for the stock rb25 turbo

I've got a stock rb25 turbo off a series 2 33 I've just taken off. Assume it's in good condition, ran fine while it was on but i've got no idea how to check. Let me know if you're interested.

Damn mine blew about 2 weeks ago but it's all up and running again. They must all be throwing the towel in these days.

It's not that hard to change the turbo if you get another standard one. Could do it in an afternoon. With that said a workshop probably wouldn't charge that much if it only took an afternoon so.. Just do it yaself and learn lots along the way;)

Grab a hold of the shaft and try and pull and push it and see if there's any movement that way or side to side or anything. Also check how freely it spins and if there's any bearing noises or vibrations as it turns:)

Its probably this crap fuel they are all slowly fazing in without us knowing. All upping the ethanol levels or something...

wtf does that have to do with turbos dying?

My 25 turbo is still going strong, it spent about a year at 12psi on an RB20 and nearly another year on an RB30!

Just something on the bcp6es plugs... i had the iridium version of these in my car originally... then changed to the $4 BKR6E plugs with a smaller gap and it ran so much better. I always use these plugs now and i recommend these to anyone that brings an rb25 into my work.

rgr34 a whistling noise is usually a vacuum leak... doesn't necessarily affect idle too much but when you get up it it will be easily noticeable. Does it struggle to make that 10psi now? I'd be checking everything carefully and making sure it's all legit.

If you've got a leak between the turbo and manifold you should be able to hear air blowing out of it or heaps louder exhaust noise from the engine bay. Good luck!

the noise i have is like a supercharger, a winning noise... its really wierd...

I had a FMIC and EBC installed, and boost upped to only 9 psi. Since then I've had a similar sound, when i hit full boost i can hear a metalic whining sound, similar to a supercharger sound. Not sure if the turbo is bad or if its just the sound resonating through the new cooler.

    • I replaced the whole clutch line with the chase bays braided hose, I think it removes that loop, is it the short hose that comes immediately off the slave or is there a drawing in the manual to find what you’re referring to? It was just re-bled when I upgraded to the nismo slave, old slave worked fine but I thought that might help, didn’t change a thing. It’s like the first half of the pedal is pushing air and then when it finally actuates the master the friction zone is tiny. Makes it practically impossible to launch the car
    • Yep, that was one of the things we learned fast in the past with our MX5. When you drive with the top down, you are effectively standing out in the sun, 100% of the time, and not getting in any shade (because roads aren't shaded generally!). Just like standing out in the middle of a field on a sunny 27C day is a bit of a bad plan, so is sitting in a MX5 without sun protection.
    • I also just ordered some Frankenstein bolts and side mounts to fit a hard top Just in case I do find one, basically so it doesn't need to be fixed to the car with only the front latch.......and then gaffa tape to keep it in place for the RTN journey from wherever I get it
    • If your temps are fine now, you probably won't have any issues with where your vents are as they don't look right up at the windscreens high pressure area, so any differences when giving it the beans for extended happy laps would be minimal, but, they should vent heaps when stuck in traffic  Much like how that reverse cowl on my SS let "visible" heat out when stationary, but, because it was basically at the windscreen my coolant temps on the Hwy actually raised because air was being fed into it at speed (110kph), to only come back down to around 90° when I got off the Hwy And your 100% correct about the NC currently not needing vents, but, if I was to add a turbo, and a oil cooler and intercooler in front of the condenserand radiator, and then take it to the track???? It is apparently a recommend requirement if I don't want to worry about coolant or oil temp issues, but, any of the above are possible scenarios, over time As it sits now, with the triple pass radiator and stock air conditioning system, I have absolutely no issues with either temps or air conditioning efficiency, I've been basically daily driving thie car for the last month, both on the Hwy, and peak hour, bumper to bumper traffic, but, that's pretty much expected from basically a standard engine  Talking about no issues daily driving, it was 39° the other day and I was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on the M5 and then M7, with the top down, and with the air conditioning blowing nice cold air on my feet, balls, and face, well, there was one issue, my head and arms got pretty sun burnt Note to self: leave a hat and sunscreen in the car for such days 🤣
    • I would agree, unless you need something specific to the HV motor/battery side repaired or investigated, any mechanic will be able to perform normal services, but if you prefer, maybe look for a mechanic who regularly services/repairs Nissans, the VQ engines are pretty common in the Nissan lineup.  Sorry, I can't make any suggestions, I don't live in Vic.
