hey guys/girls,

i recently swapped my r31 for a r32.. any ways i finally got around to putting the r33 gearbox in it that it came with. obviously the 32 runs a speedo cable and the 33 had an electronic sender, so i did what everyone said to do and got my self a nissan nivara speedo drive and put the r33 nylon speedo cog in it..

well i was coming home from turbo tune and the speedo stopped working?.. did think too much of it, i thought the cable could have come out or something..

well ne ways i was about to leave for drift prac when i noticed a huge pudle of oil under my gbox. the rear housing of the gearbox had a crack in it!

ne ways i pulled the gbox out and pulled it apart and the speedo drive had snapped in like 3 places and i had bits of metal all in my gbox.

i ended up getting another box with a smashed bell housing and swapping the rear housings. its all backtogether now but i aint that keen to do the whole nissan nivara speedo thing any more..

is there any other ways around it??

cheers Nathan

i thought u had to get a r32 Gtr speedo drive and put a nivara cog? unless i read wrong and thats what you did, ive heard of a few people have theres break off as they didnt build it properly, i thought the cogs where plastic aswell, sucks that your gearbox got blown, i would just run it without a speedo, thats what im doing atm,

You cant run it without a speedo if you want to have power steering. The speed sensor behind the dash is required for the PS.

I had problems similar to this (without the crack in the housing), but it was because i had installed the sender incorrectly. I swapped the nylon gears over no worries, but when installing the sender into the housing, youve gotta rotate it 180 degrees (this is off the top of my head). Otherwise there is too much force on the nylon cog and it will fail. You will notice that the shaft is slightly offset in the sender. My cog fell of the first time and my GB got stuck in reverse.

Dont read this post and then take my word for it. I had to use the search button, and find some tutorials that explained exactly what to do. Its all in the rotating of the sender in the box. Mines been going ok for 6 months now whereas the incorrectly installed one failed after a few days.

Hope that helps,

Shaun.

PS If you run into major probs, PM me and i will get the part number of the drive i used and dig out that tutorial. I found all the info pretty easily on this forum though.

cheers guys. yeah the gearbox didnt blow, it just cracked the housing and i bought a dud gearbox and swapped housings.

will it work with the nissan nivara speedo if i dont change the nylon cog? and also how did u get ur cog to stay on the shaft?

It might work with the navara cog, but your speedo will be way out because there is the incorrect number of teeth on the nylon gear.

Cubes did an awesome tutorial on this and it will answer any questions you have. Go to the tutorial section, type in Navara speedo sender (or similar) in the search tab and the tutorial will come up. Its even in PDF format.

In order to fit the navara cog on the shaft, i used a round file and removed the inner flat section of the cog. Make sure you dont remove too much, as you want it to be a tight tolerance fit on the shaft. Make it so that only the teeth on the shaft bite into the nylon when pressing the cog onto the shaft, otherwise you will break the cog. I seriously doubt it will come off, but i suppose you could use some bonding agent on there. Make sure it can withstand heat, oil and doesnt eat plastic though.

Greets man.

Yup, do what I did....... Gave up.

I've tried 3 different senders.

The first I had made up by a "pro" over east. It lasted 3 months before the nylon gear was stripped bare.

The second I had made up by a mechanic over here. It lasted 2 weeks before the nylon gear sheared off and ended up in the tranny.

The third I had brought in from Japan. It lasted 6 weeks before the shaft sheared in half and crunched up in the gearset.

I'm currently midway putting an R32 RB20DET box in because I'm sick of the crap and the expense.

I just need an S13 auto crossmember to fit the box as mine was an auto.

Good luck man.

Umm, you're doing something wrong then.

My suggestions are either, figure out what you're doing wrong (probably not rotating the sender to the correct angle and as such it's chewing out the gear), or just put a whole untouched Navara sender in without modifying it and live with the speedo being out some.

Going backwards to an RB20DET box is sheer stupidity in my book. I used an unmodified Navara sender (as I have different diff. ratios and it worked out pretty close to keep the 17T navara cog.. my speedo reads 7kmh high) and have had no problems whatsoever, been in there for over 6 months now.

I have the same problem but mi case is opposite i have a gtr r33 rb26dett 1996 and i buy a gear box of gtr r32 rb26dett, i have the center trasnfer bad on mi gtr r33, the speedometer of this gear box gtr r32 y cable and mi car is a electronic, are diferent, i want to know if is necesary to used the speedometer i know the speed on mi cluster don´t gonna workd, but i want to know if do cause others problems in mi car or others think don´t gonna workd too, or what can do you think are need do, i living in california and here don´t have a lot parts of this cars i buy the only gear box here and is a gtr r32 please help me about that......

Greets man.

It's hard to follow what you have written but I think I got the gist of the story.

You can run the car without the speedo sensor but there are three main issues that some people prefer to have working.

1: The car uses a HICAS system which controls the steering in the rear of the car. The HICAS senses the speed of the vehicle and issues a varied amount of steering angle dependent on the speed the car is travelling at. Without the speed sensor the HICAS system will shut down in about 5 minutes. Heaps of people don't give a shit about HICAS - me included, and lock the bastard out. You can drift better without it.

2: The power steering is also controlled by how fast you are travelling. You will notice with a working speedo, the steering will get heavier at higher speeds than at lower speed and will require more input at higher speed. Without the sensor, the steering won't perform like this.

3: You won't know exactly how fast you are going! You can get an approximate indication by having a friend travel next to you at certain speeds and taking note of your revs. Inaccurate but it'll get you by.

Weigh it up man and draw your own conclusions.

Later dude!

AND WHAT CAN YOU THINK ARE NEED TO DO THEM, BECAUSE I WANNA MI CAR ALL SYSTEMS OPERATED, BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK THERE ARE SHOULD TO DO WITH THIS PROBLEMS SPEEDDOMETER CONECTOR CABLE AND ELECTRIC, BECAUSE THE PROBLEMS IS THE GEAR BOX GTR R32 IS CABLE CONECT AND THE MI CAR IS ELECTRIC CONECT AND THE TRANSFER CENTER OF MI GEAR BOX GTR R33 ARE BAD, BUT THE TRANSFER CENTER OF GEAR BOX GTR R32 IS GOOD, HELP ME ABOUT, BECAUSE WAS MI QUESTIONS IF CAN WORK GOOD WITHOUT SPEEDOMETER THANKS

That's a good question there..... In my opinion you should be able to adapt the R32 sensor with the R33 in an opposite sense of what is happening in this thread. I've tried to go from R33 to R32 three times with no luck, but there are people in this thread that are having success with the conversion.

Help us out here people. Has anyone heard of converting R33 to R32???? I've not heard of it but someone may have and could help out.

I'm also unsure if the gearbox centres are able to be crossed. I've only played with R32 GTR gear, not R33 so I am unfamiliar with R33 gearbox internals.

Hopefully someone else can step in here man as I cannot give you a definate answer.

Sorry dude.

Don't quote me, but you should just be able to plug the 33R sender into the 32R box..

Men the speedometer sensor electronic plug of the gtr r33 transfer is more small than speedometer cable sensor of gtr r32 tranfer, this mi trouble, I only want to know what a can do.....need only help about this problems somebody can help me about that Thanks..............

well i got some1 on this site to make me the speedo sender, think it was the guy who wrote the diy, i havnt driven the car yet, so not sure how long it will alst, but yes he made a different slot on the other side (rotate 180deg) i asked him what that was about and he said the gear will get chewed if you dont do that, so yeah hopefully it should last, i hope so, cost me $250, he got all new stuff from nissan though so i guess that would be right,

i would love to transfer the r33 looms into the r32 and somehow use the eletric sender? meh wat a mish,

with the speed sensor though, what i dont see,

say you take out hicas, so your only running powersteering through the rack etc... (remove all hicas lines and everything), so pretty much how could a signal change the steering? i dont think it would change anything as the steering for the front wheels are a manual thing, theres no way that a eletric signal could change how much the engine is turning the power steering?

so im guessing for the hicas set up then sure it can affect it? any more info on this would be good? o if your gonna say im wrong, then i want a good reason and details, so i can understand fully

Wrong. :) There is a solenoid on the power steering rack that varies the bypass of hydraulic pressure so that the steering is light at carpark speeds and goes progressively firmer as speed increases.

Using the r33 sender would require the use of an r33 cluster as well and I wouldn't be lining up to either do the slightly easier job of just making it fit, or the total hd.fu.k of trying to sort out all the wiring, but good luck to you if you want to try..

That is sort of right, main points are ok, but the power steering effort goes from light at just about walking pace to heavier the greater the speed in an almost linear fashion.. close enough approximation to linear to not make any difference.

When it goes into what the manual calls 'fail safe' mode, it approximates the force for equivalent to 30-60kph. Figures that this is a safe enough setting that you won't lose control too easily. Feels realy wierd when this kicks in when you are halfway around a corner..

+1 For about a month before I put my 25t box in, I was driving around with a snapped speedo cable (was over Xmas so couldn't do much about it.. bought a radar detector to be on the safe side heh), but yeah it takes a couple of minutes for it to kick into failsafe mode and it is pretty dodgy if you're turning when it does so!
