I was just thinking.

Wouldnt it be nice if we could drive faster on the roads. say 75 in a 60 zone legally.

1st of all. The car must be able to stop in the same space/distance that a standardized car *eg a holden omega*

2. Must be able to stop at that distance cold *ie 1st thing in the morning*

3. Must have random test to prove that it can still stop in that distance other wise the speed is reduced.

So bascially im saying.

Grab a holden omega commie get it to 60kph and brake as hard as you can. lets say it can stop in 40m *its just numbers*

Next grab your nicely done up car. eg bigger brakes, better tyres, decent suspension, get it up to a set speed. ie 60kph and brake as hard as you can. Lets say it stops in 25m

next test is to speed up the car, ie 70kph, do the same thing, ie get the car up to speed and brake. lets say it brakes in 33m

then increase the speed of the car until it can stop within the 40m in 3 quick sessions.

There is a neg to this tho. It would be lanes of traffic. maybe also change the road rules so that only certine cars can use the right hand lane after they have complete the test? and on single lane roads, they can only drive as quick as the slowest car

anyway i thought i would just put this up for discussion. so enjoy.

Just a few questions:

How would police know if an individual car was speeding? (easy to say any car traveling over 60km/hr is speeding, and it makes good revenue )

There is more to driving than stopping distances.

Are the roads up to an acceptable standard? Poor road surfaces have a huge impact regardless of the cars ability.

In the end it will never happen, its too hard, too easy to critisize and there isnt enough votes in it (lower the speed limit even further though and then you will win votes- unfortunatley)

True. But people like to twist an argument to benefit them, so this thread ain't dead yet :O

This is the most stupidest idea I've heard yet :D

I think speed limits should be abolished altogether outside of the City limits and more money spent towards driver training and awareness improvements. Speeding doesnt kill; inattentive driving does.

Speeding does kill ... its killed quite a few wallets lately.

one point of trouble for this is if the point of impact is within the first 30m.. your sports car is still travelling considerably faster than the commy. it's not always the distance to stop but the speed at point of impact which is before your stopping distance.

It should be a lot harder to get your license in the first place and more cash needs to be spent on driver training and education. rather than just the easy out of slowing down traffic, especially on open roads, say between Alice & Adelaide, 1500 k's is a long drive and at 100-130kph gets very tiring, but at 150-200kph you are more alert and travel time is greatly reduced, thus less chance of an accident.

You can't really have different rules for different cars, how is an observer meant to know if one skyline (or whatever) can stop in a certain distance and another can't?

Why did the NT remove that unlimited speed limit on their freeways and restrict it to some mild 130k/h? That would be cool if they removed the speed limits on our country freeways.

All you'd hit is a Water Buffalo.

I say, abolish Defects. Daniel for SA Premier. Straight pipes with no cats, screamers and cardboard bodykits should be legal! Woo!

Wait... am I talking shit again? Damn.

ummm....

Point of this thread?

I think we lost our "no limits" because poli's think we need to follow suit of the states.

Makes no sense to me, as roads in SA and Tas that I know of, are skinny rough and twisty and speed limit is up to 110k's yet on open, flat, wide, straight roads we can only do 130k's... it just doesn't make sense!

maybe i did not get my idea across.

also i did not take in account the speed of impact. but then again what is the average speed of impact?

as for the should be harder to get your licence. I disagree, getting your licence should be a peice of cake, BECAUSE you have had enough training and education.

Maybe would should also have the same type of training that germany does with its autobahn system, where you cannot drive on it till you have passed a autobahn 'test.

as for observer to know the difference, maybe have the numberplates a different colour?

at the end of the day it will NEVER happen, its already been said that it is just too hard for it to be enforced etc.i say spend the extra money on fixing up the dam roads. SA = worst roads i have ever seen.if i have to travel along south rd again and hit a freaking man hole cover that has sunk 4cm into the ground again im going to go hire my own dam bitumin machine and fix the dam things.

with how hard my car hits them i wouldnt be soprised if its doing damage because its sure as hell hurting me.

right on the money

spend all the money in the world on changing speed signs, and you'll get marginal benefits on average

spend all the money in the world on more in depth training for drivers (scoring an 80% on your log book test you can do entirely at your leisure surely can't be all that satisfiying.)

    • It only looks tidy, as most of the stuff that was on the whole back wall, is now in the trailer to go to the tip, or has been shoved in my 2.2x2.4m "Spare parts room", and now I can't get to anything in there Ha ha ha I could definitely do with a bit more space, but I'd just end up with your problems I'm going to enclose the car port beside the garage, and move a lot of stuff into it I think. OR... It will be setup as a fabrication area, and the main garage will have parts storage in it. I'm not sure yet... Need some pictures of that big shed you've got with the bikes and Skyline in
    • No. I think it's gone. 😭 I think you can get body coloured ones on eBay so I think I'll get one of those... Or just hang a red ribbon from the hole and whack a TOW sticker next to it.
    • Can't say I've had a bad experience with one on my car, then again it only gets washed once or twice a year... The wheels on the other hand, get a good spray often due to my shitty dusty pads.
    • @MBS206 thats pretty neat and tidy to me!  I'll get a photo of mine when I'm out there next. It might require multiple photos to understand the scale of the atrocities though... In total I have 4 sheds of varying sizes and layouts. Main shed is 14x8, second shed is 3x8, third shed is 11x2.5, fourth shed is around 6x4.  All are pretty much full.   The main goal of my cleaning tsunami is to make the main shed predominantly car and motorbikes only. Second shed is my metal fab room (2 x bench grinders, drill press, bench belt sander, metal band saw, scrap metal storage and some of my garden tools.  3rd shed is more bigger garden stuff, storage for engine crane, jack stands, concrete grinder, concrete mixer, air compressor lives there, and it now has two 2mx2m pallet racking shelves with itemised boxes holding building stuff, electrical stuff, plumbing stuff, etc, etc.  The 4th shed is Ryobi electric ride on mower, mini boom sprayer, ancient Kubota tractor, more garden stuff!  I have got a lot of shit....  Then there's the pool house (8mx4m) and the pool pump shed (4mx4m).  I built all of the sheds over the 11 years we've been here.  The main shed was a Ranbuild kit, the rest are all custom made to fit the areas available. Building the main shed taught me a LOT as I had no idea about building anything prior to that!  I've still got one more in me. It will be my man cave which I poured the extra concrete for way back when I poured the concrete for the main shed. The idea is the Skyline will be a centre piece of the main cave once (if...) it's finished.  I told my now 14 year old son yesterday that I will 100% drive him to his year 10 formal in 2 years. Still a long way off but at least I now have a date to work towards! 🤣
