Hey Lads and Lasses!

Well, to cut a long story short. At the pub. X amount of beers later. We began planning a road trip from Sydney to Tasmania looking to drive the best driving roads the East Coast has to offer.

3 cars, 6 people. (12A Mazda Capella, Rb25 R32, 4G63 VR4)

We are taking a little more than 2 weeks in January to give my mate enough time to finish a rotory conversion, give me time to finish a couple of projects and the third mate time to change a head gasket.

THe obvious one is all the Targa roads. But where/what are these roads?

Where is there to drive to?

We are looking for mountain passes, coast roads etc.

Where are the common places where people gather to meet and drive to? We want to meet people, experince the scene, drive some different roads etc.

So where are the popular places to go for a drive to? Cruise or spirited drive?

Where to sleep?

Any good places to go camping? We are sleeping where we can find to save money on accomodation.

Where is there to go out to?

Where is there to go get a good beer? Pub or clubs. Tips on where to go and what kind of music/people there are. We are all 20 so where would you guys recommend to go?

What will I need?

I am guessing many of you guys have gone for a road trip. Is there any tips you guys can give on what to bring? Some helpful hints to do some ghetto mods/repairs on the side of the road? Yes yes.. there will be many many cable ties (plastic and metal) and duct tape.

Oh!.. And by the way, do we need to pre-book the boat thing to Tasmania? where do we do that?

Coincidence maybe but a whole group of us are actually planning a round Tassie, three day cruise, on the Australia day long weekend. 1030klms in three days.

Don't sound like much??? Come try it!!!

Ideas on dates? Depends when it is and we will try be in Tasmania around that date. Should go for a drive then a beer.

My car will be well and truly back together by then. I will be more than willing to join in on the tassie leg. Should be quite fun...

Targa roads

If I were planning this trip I would head off the boat in devonport, drive on the highway to Launceston, and hit up the Sideling (an excelent starting point) then through to St.Helens. Dive down to Freycinet - Wineglass bay, and set up camp for the night, they have some nice camp sites with parking next to the sites.

Day 2, head down the coast through Swansea, Triabunna, Sorell and crash in Hobart for the night (cheap backpackers mabey)

Day 3 Possibly spend the night at Fortescue Bay, its my favourite camp spot, but pick one of the campsites you have to walk to, not park on (Its only 10m or so, and they are much quieter) - gravel road on the way in tho.

Day 4, check out Port Arthur, then head back to Hobart. Visit Richmond, but definatly take the road over grasstree hill on your way in. Stop in Hobart again.

Day 5. Head towards Strahan (pronounced something like strawn) Then take your pick of Queenstown, or Strahan to stay - not sure about camping there im afrad, but you should be able to find something.

Day 6. Head up through Zeehan towards Burnie, then back to Devonport and on the boat.

As for pubs in Hobart, head down to Salamanca and drop into Knoppies, then head up to Syrup nightclub - is my pick anyways, that might cause some heated discussion, for which I apologise in advance

You might want to book places to stay in advance, it can get busy about that time of year. Oh, and you will have to book the boat, it's an overnight trip.

Take the basic ring end spanners 10,12,14,17mm etc (only what you need on your cars), chunky pliers (bull, and needle), hammer (precision adjustment tool, or PAT), hacksaw, crowbar and tow rope. And most importantly, WD40, and Gaffa tape!

Sounds like it should be a good trip! Drive safe

Q. Does getting the car on/off the ferry damage a low front splitter (- V-Spec II)?

I have not had a car on the boat, but as a rough guide I understand it is preferable to have the car high enough to clear a coke can standing on end

Australia day, loosely speaking, often falls on the 26th January to the best of my limited knowledge

Bad news.

After trying to book the boat I found out it was going to cost $340 per person + car return.

We decided it was going to be too steep. So, epic road trip gone to SA!.

Bit of a shame, we would of loved to drive tas, perhaps in another year.

If you want to come over another time the cheap season on the boat is between May-October known as the off peak season and alsot he shoulder season. its alot cheaper and sometimes cars go free.
