Okay ive got my graphics folio due within 1-1.5 weeks and need to know how to use Autodesk 3DS Max 2009 to design a car...

Its the most complicated thing ive ever used =]

does anyone know how to set up blue prints on planes and convert it to a 3D shape....ive looked at tutorials still seems bit complicated just wondering if anyone is kind enough to give me a quick run down. thanks

I've done a bit of work in 3dSMax, and modeling a car isn't easy. The basic run down is that you need an orthogonal projection of the car. Basically, once you have a front, side rear and top view of the car, you'll need to split each eamage and apply it onto a plane/ box primative of the same proportions. For example, if your side elevation view is 600px tall x 1300px wide then you'd make a plane 600units tall by 1300units wide and apply the image to it as a material.

I don't have too much time to go into too much more detail now, but I'll try and get another reply to you later on today.

geezus 1 week. not much time to model a car lol!

unless u intend to do a rough job. in ur time frame i would be looking at coarse mesh + meshsmooth modeling easiest to do. plenty of tutorials out there that'll take u step by step through it.

took me about 2 weeks to do this one in my holidays back in 2004. this was using rhino3d(nurbs) and imported to 3dsmax to render.

impressive work Naga! I've never been much of a modeler, as most of my knowledge is in shading, textures and lighting. Any chance I can grab the file you imported into max so I can do a bit of texture/ lighting work on it? See what I can make of it?

the more practice you get the faster you will be able to make the models, i have been doing it for the past 3-4 years now.

the lemans car below took 8 hours to get to this point. will spend another 5 - 10 hours finishing it off with all the finer details.

1 - 1.5 weeks to learn and get a good quality model done will be a HUGE ask.....

    • I've been building a 26/30 for a few years now. I've had the head built with all the good stuff. I had a 32 gtr but blew it up and yes its all going into a vl but im looking for some advice from some RB nuts on pros and cons on putting a 26 head on a 30 bottom end is it worth it Works are as follows Head -Extensive porting 1mm oversized supertech valves Supertech double springs Supertech valve guides Supertech titanium retainers Tomei solid lifters Tomei 270 x 10.25 cams Head drain Bottom end series 2 rb30 block Cp ceramic coated pistons Eagle rods Romac balancer Oil restrictions  O ringed blah blah spent a fortune And will get a girdle because the 30s arent used to handling that much rpm Nitto billet oil pump Hypertune plenum 6boost mani Refurbed astra pump thats the cover for it in the boot I did have a precision 6262 but sold it because drag car life. Currently building the ass end full 4 link floater rear end with a 2 speed  But the dilemma i have is my mate rekens I should just stick with the 30 head for reliability. Has any one had any issues with mounting the 26 head ie compression blowing gaskets etc. Just looking for some advice from people who have gone down this route. Here's some photos. Blew the oil pump in the gtr and decided to rip the motor out at the time and do a full build only to find it had been a repairable write off so went down this path.

    • lol no cats running str pipes … might put the high flow back on but I suspect it might effect my ignition timing a bit.
    • That looks a bit like yellowing to me. If the rear bar was looking like that from rich idle, I'd ask the question, do you have a catalytic converter fitted, and fully working?
    • Oh yeah gets really bad down here. I’ll have to upgrade the heater and wind screen wipers as well for optimal performance.
