Hey guys, I own an r32 gtr skyline which is running the standard bush bearing steel wheel turbo's im pretty sure.

the solanoid in the boost controller is cactus so i cant set my boost. i've owned the car for 7 months or so and the past 2 weeks i've driven it hard, taking it over 5000rpm. before 5000rpm it probably only hits 13 maybe 14psi and its only driven on the weekend.

on saturday i went to overtake somebody and i put my foot down in third hitting 7500rpm and hit 1.8 bar boost. since then when my turbo's spool up i hear a high pitch whine. I pulled apart my car today to inspect the intercooler piping and the BOV to see if that might have been the problem but they all seem fine. it has blown blue smoke but there wasn't much and its only happened once and that was a few weeks ago.

I suspect that its an oil seal, bearing or the wheel in one of the turbo's but i've had a mate have a quick check over it and it doesn't seem to be driving any different. still feels just as smooth and powerful and doesn't feel like im losing boost.

if anybody has any ideas or input it would be much appreciated.

and i know running the boost controller without a working solanoid is stupid but its only a gizzmo ibc, not worth it when i have an Apexi AVCR on order.

cheers :nyaanyaa:

the stock units are ceramic, not steel wheels

remove the boost controller you have and run off the actuator, at least you will have human-normal level boost instead of unlimited boost

your current setup is unlimited boost

they're the n1 steel wheel turbo's. I've got a Nismo edition r32.

any other ideas out there?

the whinning noise u can hear is the turbo on the way out speaking from my experiences anyways.

u are much luckier then i am i could hear this whinning noise also didnt no wat the go with it was but i gave it a gut full in 2nd only to hear a high pitched pop which was the wheel shooting down my exaust with a lil cracking noise which was the wheel blowing a hole thru my cat:) :P:D

this was also on the standard turbo.

btw it was cause by the dodgy bleed valve where the bolt rattled out giving me unlimited boost for only a short while go it pulled harder ohh the memories: :/

the standard turbos dont really like boost much mate so i would rip ur bc out and run just off the actuator as said above cos u are going to be up for a new turbo soon

this is what your turbo will look like with unlimited boost continuing.

P.S i retrieved some pieces of the wheel out of my exaust as a keepsake

yea i assumed it was the wheel. i took my car for another drive last night and it sounds rotational. i then put it in nuetral and gave it some revs and didn't hear the sound because my turbo's dont spool up in when out of gear. thanks mate for the information. i think ima just buy a couple new turbo's. probably hks gtrs turbo's :)

my turbo's dont spool up when its in neutral. lol. i've hardly driven it since buying it and have no idea how its set up. guy i bought it off told me it was an 11 sec car before it came to australia. it has an apexi power fc pro in it, dunno what other shit is in there. wont find out until i pull it all out.

sorry mate but i doubt it wouldn't spool up in neutral, it would take a fair bit of engineering to make it happen and what would be the point anyway?

well when i rev it i hear no turbo's and no blow of valve. sorry people im not a car expert, know f**k all about them tbh. so i assumed that they're not spooling up. or are they spooling up and not making boost?

lol at the turbos not spooling in neutral

so your engine stops producing exhaust gases in neutral as well does it?

There's not much load on the engine so, you will get very little spooling as per previous posts.

Watch your boost gauge if you have one....if doesn't exactly do much in neutral

*Dave here*

you should check the end float on the turbos asap. any noise is bad. but if you catch it now you might be able to save your motor.

you have to pull off the suction pipes to see. and hopefully they are steel wheel ones.. lol.

Boost created is relational to load (amount of throttle used).

How much throttle do you use to rev the engine in neutral?? (rhetorical question).

Small amount of throttle = small amounts of exhaust gases, which in turn means not much boost created.

Some "know-it-all" people should probably do a bit of research before acting all big and mighty with their "opinions"

If you're turbos are creating more boost than they are supposed to then it is related to your wastegate. The boost-solenoid controls the signal to your wastegate actuator so it is most likely the problem.

Best short term solution is to remove the solenoid so the actuators work on their own without the solenoid, and have the turbo's inspected by a reputable mechanic.

    • Sounds good.  I don't 100% understand what your getting at here. When you say, "I keep seeing YouTube videos where people have new paint and primer land on the old clearcoat that isn't even dulled down" do you mean this - there is a panel with factory paint, without any prep work, they paint the entire panel with primer, then colour then clear?  If that's what you mean, sure it will "stick" for a year, 2 years, maybe 3 years? Who knows. But at some stage it will flake off and when it does it's going to come off in huge chunks and look horrific.  Of course read your technical data sheet for your paint, but generally speaking, you can apply primer to a scuffed/prepped clear coat. Generally speaking, I wouldn't do this. I would scuff/prep the clear and then lay colour then clear. Adding the primer to these steps just adds cost and time. It will stick to the clear coat provided it has been appropriately scuffed/prepped first.  When you say, "but the new paint is landing on the old clearcoat" I am imagining someone not masking up the car and just letting overspray go wherever it wants. Surely this isn't what you mean?  So I'll assume the following scenario - there is a small scratch. The person manages to somehow fill the scratch and now has a perfectly flat surface. They then spray colour and clear over this small masked off section of the car. Is this what you mean? If this is the case, yes the new paint will eventually flake off in X number of years time.  The easy solution is to scuff/prep all of the paint that hasn't been masked off in the repair area then lay the paint.  So you want to prep the surface, lay primer, then lay filler, then lay primer, then colour, then clear?  Life seems so much simpler if you prep, fill, primer, colour then clear.  There are very few reasons to go to bare metal. Chasing rust is a good example of why you'd go to bare metal.  A simple dent, there is no way in hell I'm going to bare metal for that repair. I've got enough on my plate without creating extra work for myself lol.
