Well its common knowledge that when a car is imported it seems to "lose" a few km's off the odometer especially with the older cars.

...so with the R34's and its electronic readout can you trust em a bit more or are they all subjected to the same molestation? Is it alot harder to change the odo readout so alot of ppl dont bother winding them back?

Reason i ask is coz the gf wants to get an R34 (maybe just an n/a), with low km's but im not sure about the reliability of the odometers despite them still looking rather clean and consistent with the readout. The layout of the motor makes it a bit harder to do a compression test myself so i'd prob have to go off other signs.

Any links to previous threads on this subject (or what to lookout for when buying a 34) are welcome

Even without help from the pros, it's as simple as removing the cluster, disconnecting the three wires connecting it and replacing it with something else. The odometer reading is in the cluster itself not the ecu.

Digital are just as bad as the manual ones..

Been said once i will say it again, don't judge a car on the amount of Ks its done but for its condition!

I have driven a car with 140xxx odd kms and it was alit better then a few cars with 40xxx-60xxx..

Im sure u will find a lot of others who have had similar situtations!

Yeah, digital speedo's can be wound back.

I heard about this happening many yrs ago not long after they first came out in cars.

I'd take grey import's odometer readings with a grain of salt.

Just look at as many as you can and see how they drive. The ones with more work will feel looser.

A friend who was a car salesman once said that one of the things they look for is the wear/shininess of the steering wheel. Obviously if it's not stock then that theory won't work. But as the 34's had airbags on them, I'd say most people wouldn't swap them.
