hey guys i justg build a rb30det, its got a rb25de from a 32 head, r31 block, r33 turbo injectors, hyper gear tr43 turbo full exhaust front mount, im not running the vvt. and running a rb20det ecu. the problem i have is that when i kick it over it sounds like it has a miss. when i drive it it runs like sh*t as soon as it gets off vac n onto boost it just feels like it just wonts to die.

have you remapped the ecu?

The original post leads me to suspect your ECU is stock RB20 without mapping adjustments. If so, of course it will run poorly. Time for a remap.

That's not exactly true.

If he is trying to run RB25DET injectors on a stock RB20 ecu, then yes it will run like crap.

If he is using all RB20 items (injectors, sensors etc), then it will run fine on the stock RB20DET ecu. But with a bigger turbo on there it's going to hit R&R pretty damn quickly and likely max the airflow meter pretty quickly too.

Get a remap before you blow your engine up.

I ran mine on a stock ECU for a few months but I've only got a little 25 turbo on there.

Oh and R32 RB25DE head doesn't have VVT. If your head does have VVT, and you're using side feed RB25DET injectors, then I think you need to clarify a few things...

Spend the money on an aftermarket ECU and just do it right.

This sounds like a budget build but there's still thing's you need to cough for no matter what. Nistune maybe a smart economical invesment.

Also if you do indeed have r33 turbo injectors it will not run on the current ecu, as already mentioned.

thanks for your help guys. its a r33de head but im not running vvt i changed the cam from the rb20det cos im running adjustable cam gears, im running r33 gtst injectors, yes standard rb20 ecu and rb20det afm, its also running very rich i think its cos the injectors, i also pluged in a rb25det ecu in and it still run rich. yeh im gunna get aftermarket ecu, but f*k there is so many out there its doin my head in lol, i just wont to make sure it was running fairly well befor i put it on the dyno and so i can drive it there. thanks

If you're not going to run vvt then just get a z32 afm and have the RB20 ecu remapped.

Also, I'm surprised the RB20 ecu ran the RB25DET injectors and coils.. isn't there wiring differences?

You have such a mismatch of parts there I'm not surprised it runs like shit.

If you were running RB20 ecu with RB20 afm and RB20 injectors, it probably wouldn't be so bad.

Likewise if you were running RB25DET items allround it probably wouldn't be so bad either.

There are two injector wires that need to be swapped over from the rb20 and rb25 ecu's. Do r32 rb20 and r33 rb25det injectors have the same impedence?

Yeah I thought there was a wiring difference, however minor, it's still different!

I am running the following

rb30e block rebuilt to stock spec

rb25de vct r33 head

r33 turbo injectors

rb20 cas

rb20 ignitor

rb20 coils

rb20 afm

rb20det loom from r32 with replaced injector plugs to suit the rb25 injectors

max oversize hiflow

all running on a remapped rb20ecu. it runs like factory, cold start, knock map ect 12:1 afr and it passed emissions test.

so it can be done..

rowan your setup sounds almost the same as mine, pm me if you are interested in remapping.

  • 2 weeks later...

R32 RB20DET = 270cc Injectors

R33 RB25DET = 370cc Injectors

Wire up the consult port if it isn't already, do a diagnostic using datascan or similar, eliminate any fault codes, get a tune...
