was pulling out from the bank today and all of the sudden my battery light comes on on the dash, alternator commences screaming its head off. my stereo and electrics all flicker and turn off/or operate faster than usual...

drove straight home and flicked her off, turned it on again to see if it was still there and it was. give it a rev and the scream returns, windows go superfast...tho when a device such as the windows are used, the battery light goes off, i guess because its using charge...tends to suggest the alternator might be overcharging...

for instance, my windows go up and down superfast now...havnt been game to try anything else out in fear of burning it out...but wth? makes sense that the screaming coming from the alternator tricks the battery light on, but why? whats happend? would my alternator be on the way out? is it overcharging/overtentioned pulley? and what should i do next? :S

cheers...

living in a country town is gonna be hard to find one for a jap import...unless they are a universal fit? what else would suit a RB25? im thinking one from a R31/VL (RB30)?

Edited by G0DZLR

I'd check the amp rating on them. The RB30 one's are rated to less, but should fit.

They are a mitsubushi alternator so I'd look around at some mitsu's to see what they use, if they are the same mounts etc.

UPDATE: limped the car to an auto electrician today, have been quoted $340! to repair the alternator....this doesnt sound normal to me at all...considering i couldv picked up a replacement for $50-$100 on here...is this way overpriced?

What did he say the problem was? 100% sure its an alternator, I would suggest taking it out getting the part number and seeing if the two you are contemplating to replace it with are interchangeable ether that or you could post it here and hope someone can FAST it for you which might work

An R33 alternator is a direct bolt-on onto a r32 rb20 engine (apart from the battery bolt terminal but thats easily replaced by auto-electrician)

If a VL alternator is the same as a r32 alternator, then it should fit your r33..

Bosch Australia charges about $250~ for a brand new R31 alternator, so a price of $340 for a rebuild is a rip off. If you pull out the alternator for him, it should only cost about $150-$200 to rebuild

Mate my alternator was making a rattling noise (sounded like a bearing) and i replaced it. All good now, cost me $120 for a R33 one from a wrecker with 30day warranty, no dramas as of yet. You do find the odd R33 alternator on ebay, i saw one go for $90.
