Car:

BP Ultimate 99% of the time

$80 these days.. a few months ago nearly $100

that is driving city driving under 4000 rpm most of the time and then giving it the occasional spirited drive.

Other Comments:

im a very christian motorist most of the time.. this saves me a lot of fuel, however seems pointless for when i do give it a squirt the needed dramatically drops closer to E

another thing is i tend not to fill the tank up to much. i just top it up when it gets low.. normally sits about half way mark.

I don't think there is a problem at all by the sounds of it that seems pretty reasonable and judging by your price I don't think your running all the way empty, the fuel gauge goes REALLY low just remember your fuel light only comes on roughly 7 liters (according to the manual) and your tank has a capacity of around 70 (65 on the books) but has a bit more in the pipes

Edit: Also just my personal opinion i went from Shell V-Power to BP and HOLY crap car runs several times better and almost never backfires (4inch exhaust...I know it came with the car)

Car: 1993 R33 GTS-T manual, exhaust roughly the size of my head (came with car), aftermarket air filter, apexi dual chamber bov (also came with car, I will be changing for stock bov soon), turbo timer set to 30 seconds every time car is used, otherwise stock

Petrol of choice: BP Ultimate 98

So far fuel economy is averaging 10.5L/100kms. This is all suburban driving.

Driving style: 95% of driving has been driving quite sensible with changes generally around 2.2-2.5k rpms with light throttle use. 5% moderate thrashing with changes 5-5.5k rpm. Most of the times I have a passenger in the car as well.

KM's per tank:

close to 500kms per 50L with sensible suburban driving.

When I was giving it a bit of a thrash though I would get 150-200kms per 50L, I could literally see the needle dropping, car was backfiring a little bit I think, this is on stock boost as well.

Overall I am pleasantly surprised at the fuel economy of the skyline, I was expecting around 13-14L/100kms when I bought it. On boost driving is a different story though, is 20-25L/100kms normal for hard driving in a skyline? It seems my skyline could drink a v8 under the table if its pushed hard enough

im gettting about 250 per tank, city driving, running max 5psi for 3 seconds max. i dont really give my car any squirts..

i put in bp ultimate all the time,

put that injector cleaner today, see how that goes, then gonna replace the fuel pump. and see how that goes.

Car:

98 R34 GTT, basic mods - 3"exhaust, 12psi, power fc.

Well based on what I've been paying of late, and the tank is 65L i guess that makes it about $85 to fill from dry

If I was to use the entire tank, based on my last few fill ups I would get somewhere between 620 and 660km. (avg consumption has ranged between 9.9L/100km & 10.5L/100km)

I do a fair bit of highway driving. Probably around 65-70%.

I don't give it a hard time too much either.

Just put $70 yesterday when the light came on. Pump told me filled 53L so guess another 12L in the tank + lines.

380kms when light came on and filled up.

Daily conservative driving to work in the city in peak hr (changing under 2.5 mostly), might unleash it once in a while but not too often at all.

Other Comments:

in my r33 s2 n/a used to get the best milage with Mobil8000 (light comes on about 420km)

currently on v-power, we'll see how that goes.

I cant believe people are using 91/90 ron in their turbo skylines?!?! thats just stupid.... They are meant to run on super octane in japan which is actually RON97. Some people say its RON 100 but its not, its 97.

I wouldnt touch the low grade fuel...... short term saving in petrol... long term going to cost you more for maintenance..

420kms is what i got when i first tested it. my skyline is moderately modified.

please dont use low grade fuel! For a NA you prob can get away with premium 95... bbut for turbo dont risk the pinging and knocking...

Consistently get ~13L/100km which gives ~500km range (taking fuel tank as 65L according to Nissan), more realistic would be ~450km per tank I reckon.

Other Comments:

Car is serviced every ~5000 km, used as a daily car mainly for shopping & going to/from uni.

Granny driving most of the time (doesn't hit boost often or for long), revs <4500rpm & max throttle I have given is only ~50% (according to SAFC 2).

Has the basic mods done:

-POD

-3" turbo back exhuast

-Bleed valve, upped boost to 10psi

-SMIC from R34 GTT

-SAFC II

I think this has been roughly covered before but couldn't find anything which matched what I'm looking for or anything that was up-to-date (old threads) since gas formulas are changing I figured things might be different now. I want to do a small survey and gather people opinions I was going to make this into a poll but it would be too long and too limited so please fill in this survey, I tried to include all things relevant, tell me if you think I'm missing something or have a suggestion. I originally had Driving area, style and KMS per tank on separate sections but I don't think anyone drives the same all the time so put it all together so people can list options based on their experience instead just one big average.

Really sorry if this is a re-post or there is something already very similar but I hope people fill this out it would be very interesting to know, I will consolidate peoples replies after I get a few so it's easier to view all the results and compare, I hope this is well received. Also someone told me he runs his R33 on regular unleaded and thinks there will be no problems in the future and doesn't experience knocking, can anyone confirm this?

Was getting average of 13.2L/100km after rebuild.

Recent tune 3 weeks ago at Status Tuning, Trent mentioned he dialed down the fuel by 10%.

Since then, the last two tanks have been 11.6 and 11.9L/100km

Currently ~600 for normal driving. Last freeway trip (prior to intake mod) netted 744kms with 70L used

Average is currently 9.3km/L or 10.75L/100kms

1994 R32 GTR VSpecII with 157000km / Stock turbos @ 1BAR, Nistune, Stock airbox with K&N (now apexi pods but just installed them so I'll use the airbox kms), front pipes and full Kakimoto 3 inch, un-opened engine, Nismo twin plate clutch, Tein SS and still rolling on VSpecII wheels.

BP Ultimate

$ Per Tank:

around $80 I think, I always fill above empty so sometimes it's as little as $60

500-550 for some reason my car doesn't care if it's Freeway, city, traffic, no traffic or giving it stick! For the record I drive to and from work everyday from Melton to Hawthorn so freeway the whole way pretty much but westgate is sometimes a carpark. As a comparison GOR weekend cruise I got 540 out of that tank and I did not go light on the right foot!

Other Comments:

Keep it clean and serviced, I service every 10-15000 kms with whatever synthetic oil I have at the time, keep the fuel fresh as it does lose it's RON over time and that can't help with the economy side of things. Also drive smoothly blah blah blah you know how to drive economically!

Car/Mods:

1999 r34 gtt, 3" cat back exhaust with 4.5" tip, propably tune with previous owner, nankang r18/265's on back and r18/235's at front

Gas of Choice:

any 98 octane, do a lot of driving so don't always get to choose where i fill up

@ between 135 and 147c/L lol, usually $70-85, filling round 55L

drive in a lot of traffic with uni, work but also do sydney-newcastle trips weekly, gets round 400km per tank, but only since i reset the ecu

Average all from 51L average fill:

380km when driving hard, trips to mt Cootha, etc.

420km in Sydney driving to from work through the city.

430km in Brisbane suburbs and city

460km with a highway trip up the coast and back

570km from 52L driving Sydney to Brisbane.

Other Comments:

My fuel ecnomy improved a little going from stock turbo to Apexi AX53B70 on the same generic remap.

Keeping your car well serviced (plugs, fuel filter, O2 sensor especially) and driving style are by far the most important factor.

My driving style is pretty good (regularly smash the GF's fuel economy records in her car - just to give her the old "I can drive better than you and not just faster reminder". But I'm not a total pussy, I will give it a bootful at least once per day. I'm usually one of the slowest in 1st gear off the lights, I look ahead - and not just the car 1 in front, which allows me to only accelerate or decelerate the right amount. IF you drive by looking ahead you won't just save fuel but also tyres, clutch and brakes. (My brake pads last ~60,000km - including 1 track day, my clutch lasts 80,000km, my tyres 40,000km).

With a few tips my girlfriend's average Km per tank went steadily up from 380km to 520km over a few months.

    • It makes you wonder, all these people starting to make a billet replacement head, I wonder if any have thought about trying to adapt tech from newer engines into them. You're already at the full design stage to make a billet head... Why not really spice it up and had some more modern tech into the mix too...
    • Connect all the plumbing up properly. The actual worst part about having the turbo unable to actually build boost, is you can and likely would over soon the turbo if you drove the car (free rev while stationary isnt likely to manage it).   If you do have an air leak as Duncan suggested, you'll have a bad time as the AFM will be saying different to reality.   As you have had the engine out, I'd go over all electrical connections again. If you have a consult cable, plug it in, and see what the ECU thinks is going on. Did you touch the timing belt? If so, double check your timing on the gears is correct AND put a timing light on it while it's idling and see what ignition setting you have. Is the AFM you've installed the one that was in the car previously? You said you replaced seals, what seals exactly? What have you had apart?   From memory when I had my RB25DET with factory throttle, there was two plugs the TPS plug on the loom could go to. One would leave the car running like shit, the other made it work, I think one plug on the TPS area was for something else (an option). It's too many years since I saw that part of the loom to remember properly though.   Is the car idling smooth (as smooth as an RB can)? Does it smell fuelled up?   I have a feeling either timing in timing belt is off, or a sensor isn't right.
    • Theres still skid pan and motokhana days up in QLD at least that are $100 or less. The ones that are ran as "driver training" less so, they're expensive, but just normal skid pan days like SAU ran are still low cost. And thats one of the places I learned to be a lariken, purely by asking for passenger rides, and how people were doing crazy things. Reese gave me plenty of pointers back in the day for skid pan! And yes Duncan, I will never forget your pointers for track work. Especially after Neil got out saying "I am NEVER getting in the car with him again!" 😛
    • 49719 is the cooler loop. Right at the front, LHS of that diagram. Return line from rack (LP side) goes to cooler loop on RHS front of car, then back under engine and returns to bottom of tank. 49717M is feed from tank to pump. HP line out of pump is thick rubber, followed by the hard line that runs down to crossmember and runs in parallel (but opposite flow direction) to the LP return line. Nothing goes anywhere near the firewall or interior of car. The closest they get to that is the connections on the rack.
    • Thanks, plan is to drain all fluid tomorrow and do smoke test to find out the leak.   Appreciate your help and want to understand how the system work. So cooling is achieved by the long loop not any rad? The diagram seems to suggest it connects to somewhere inside the cabin and I thought that is a cooler inside firewall. If you look at the diagram it seems to show it connects to something inside firewall. I tried chasing it but not easy unless I take loads off   i am confident pump is good as fluid goes in and it gets soft( steering) but as soon as I turn engine off , loads of bubble come to surface and overflow. When engine is on , fluid level is below minimum but when off it shoots off and thinking it is sucking air in. I suspect aluminium pipe may have a crack line or whole   smoke test with no fluid should be a good start and if needed will remove the pump   In addition, the one going under the engine bay is high pressure line and one directly connecting from pump to resorvoir is return/ low pressure?   finally I searched and suggestion is to use dexron 2 but that is discontinued so bought dexron 3 as all research suggest it is compatible and shouldn’t cause any issues/ blow seals. I bought two liter of dexron 3 motul atf
