Hey guys

I was filling up my car to full today and i realised beneath me there was petrol. I looked under my car and it was leaking fuel by the time i filled up i would lost an easy litre and there is a smell of petrol fumes which my mechanic had stated it was coming from the boot where the fuel tank is. At the moment i get approx 250 km per full tank but at first i thought it was linked to my transmission not kicking into overdrive when driving at 100km. what is wrong with my car?????

Does your car have an aftermarket fuel pump? It may be that the O-ring that seals the fuel pump panel is perished or mis-aligned.

Check the restrictor neck (where you fill) has been installed correctly. It should be "sandwiched" between the body and the fitting that takes the fuel cap.

Thanks for your help guys

No it is not leaking from the boot it was leaking underneath the car. I also checked the boot when i saw it leaking and it wasnt leaking from the boot next to the battery. I drove home and checked if it was leaking but it stopped.

Also, the guy i had bought the car from had an aftermarket fuel tank or surge tank or whatever it is but he removed it from the car so i was thinking he didnt remove it correctly thats y it is leaking?

are you sure it wasn't just the little overflow from being overfilledd? the filler neck has an overflow thing in it and this dumps the fuel out under the car.

Beer baron yea but even if he did over fill he shouldn't be getting 250 per tank thats shocking, I get 300 and I know somethings wrong, replacing the O2 sensor hopefully it's that

Detour do you notice fuel on the ground when you park? or less fuel in your tank *keep in mind the fuel gauge reading is altered by the temp outside and the engine*

Hi,

I had a similar problem. It turned out that the seal on top of the fuel tank was leaking, but only when you the tank was filled to the full mark. A small amount would leak over the top of the tank down the sides and then directly underneath the car.

Remove the inspection plate located in the boot. This will reveal the access to the top of the tank and fuel pump. Go to your local servo and fill up your tank till it's full. Keep an eye out on the top of the tank and if you notice fuel pouring out of the top (trust me you will notice it) then its a good chance that it's the seal. It would also be a good idea to check all the fuel hoses going to and from the tank and check for wear or cracks.

can i ask does the rear of ur car always have a fuel sorta smell.. cause im having a similar problem.. when i fill it up it overflows.. and it always a fuel sorta smell to the rear of the car n also get terrible fuel mileage.. usually around 250kms/tank

anyway im going to have a look at some of the suggestions tomorrow and see if i can fix the problem

I had a similiar problem on my R33. It was the hose coming from the fuel pump to the connector under the car. It was split in the middle, so the only way I picked it up was by having someone look in the access panel in the boot with a torch, and then I was turning on the ignition to prime the fuel pump. Because it was wet under the car while it was off, but you could only see the leak when the car was on.

      My stuff is all with Shannon's, granted, I don't really have imports I'm driving on the road, however, I've had multiple cars at the same time with them. Presently we have the Landcruiser on laid up cover, Sarah's Kluger on full cover, and the house insured. About 18 months ago Sarah wrote her Subaru Liberty GTB off, insured with Shannon's, and the payout, and buy back of the wreck was super quick. In 2020 we had the VF Commodore totalled in a major hailstorm. Storm was on the Saturday, I called on the Sunday and lodged it, vehicle was towed on Tuesday night, assessment team called on Wednesday to say it was a total loss and get payout details, money was in the bank on Thursday morning. Have had a few other claims both at fault, and not at fault, over the years, and never had an issue with them.   Funnily enough, they're also the cheapest insurer I find for things like Sarah's Kluger.   I will say I'm less impressed dealing with them lately around "the experience", as a lot of their staff that you deal with aren't car enthusiasts. Shannon's has a much more main stream feel ever since they decided to become "big corporate", laid a heap of staff off, and then hired a bunch of non enthusiasts. At the same time they've been making a push to be less "call us and we'll personally have someone who cares help" to "hey, this computer can do stuff for you" and are trying to get more square pegs to fit round holes. (That's just the vibe I get from them). Again, have had no issues with claims with them, but get a bit of a "less personal" feel from them.

      A thing I wasn’t happy with with enthusiast was during the initial phone call they told me they’d insure it for 130k but needed photos.   I then sent them photos and they told me $80k as there were other cars either similar modifications available for around that price, I told them to send me the links to said cars so that I can buy them. i then sent the modification list with prices of the parts (no labor) and the price then came to 115k, which is still shy of the 130 that was agreed in the initial phone call

      I agree that delayed payment probably isn't the most suitable solution. It seems a solid complete transaction would be best. As I wouldn't be using this sale as a line of credit that would typically earn interest, we can probably arrange a much cleaner single transaction deal. I can do $92.52 today. Would you prefer EFT, or Cash on Pickup?  😛

      Oh man what a deal.... Funny enough (well not really) I sold a car to some old dude (buying for his Daughter) on a Saturday, He asked if she could take the car now and pay me the money on Monday as the bank wasn't open. Needless to say I told them to come back with the cash or get f**ked! Luckily the money seemed to magically appear in his pocket a few minutes later, so it all ended well (for me).
