MMMM-CRUMPLE ZONES. Car with crumple zones hits large car, small car crumples. I do alot of driving around Australia and unfortunatly get to see alot of wrecks.

Engine and box crumpled into cabin- passenger side door crumpled into drivers side door, ect ect.

New cars are good if they hit at lower speeds but i find at anything over 100kph the crumple zones are mute ( car A at 50kph + car B at 50kph = 100kph, try driving head first into a wall at that speed, its roughly the same effect.)

Diving thru Far North QLD 2 weeks ago i came across a accident where a magna crossed the center line and hit a landcruiser, landcruiser had 2 adults and 2 children in it and apart from shock ( landcruiser was on its side ) were ok- magna driver and passenger were not so lucky, driver dead, passenger trapped with unknown injuries.

We stopped to see if wecould help but the cops and ambo,s had it under control.

For the people who think that the large cars shouldnt be on the road, should we ban all trucks, buses and people towing caravans or should we understand that the road is there to share and have some respect for others operating equipment different to ours.

If you want big and scarry drive up to Weipa in the Cape and dice with the road trains, after that the local 4x4s wont fell so big.

Ill stop now.

dude i think your looking into this thread a little too much.

clearly this is a bit of light humor to entertain and point out a funny situation. i dont think he is taking this piss out of 4x4 owners and its clearly not a competition to see who can drive past the biggest trucks on the road.

cool pic. car looks hawt too mate. cool.gif

the worst thing about all the big cars around is when you are driving behind them. now normally you can see hundreds of meters ahead. so when driving along at 60 you see a red light 150meters away you know you'll need to brake soon and can anticipate the stop well in advance. if stuck behind a land yacht all you can see is their baby on board sign and scegs redlands bumper sticker until they slam on the brakes at the last minute. now you will be able to stop 999 times out of 1000 but sometimes the bloke behind you wont have brakes so good and will end up nailing the back of your nice car. ;) that's my main grip with them. that they block your forward visibility. it's especially bad in the RX7 since your bum is about 2 inches off the road.

as a mechanic that used to work for toyota.. i got to drive alot of prados, hiluxs and klugers, and ravs.... and they are woeful... they are really shit on the road... compared to say... an aurion or camry... and the rear vision.. heck, all vision is near on non existent.. driving on the hoist or around other cars in the workshop was always a mission, and the turning circles are crap... not to mention running costs.. tyres, 5 oils to change, thirsty buggers, and the noise that you have to put up with...

and as for safety?? well sure they may be bigger and heavier... but what about the poor person they run into??

and heres another thing, these bullbars and towbars... how many are adr approved and how many say in really small writing "off road use only"?? they are just as defectable as our bovs and pods that say "race use only".. thats why a genuine toyota bullbar is $2000 and a knock off one is $1000.. the genuine one works with the crumple zones and airbags.. non genuine does not. and if you get a steel one... well... i shudder at the thought.

the road belongs to everyone and everyone should drive to the conditions.. at the end of the day, cars dont kill people, people kill people.

anyways, back to the pic.. thats incredible... normally the r33 gtr has the presence of dolph lundgren.. there it looks more like rocky. go rocky!!

cheers

Linton

very good point on the bullbars yet I wonder how many defects are handed out for a dangerous bullbar? very few I'd wager. yet an unsafe bullbar can kill someone. don't think a BOV, or loud exhaust could turn an otherwise non-fatal collision into a fatal one, but I bet the wrong type of bullbar can...

ive seen some shocking bullbars, ones that need heavier springs in the front just to hold them up.. add massive winch with steel cable weighing around anywhere from 40 to 60kg and its a massive amount of weight in front of the wheels added to an already heavy vehicle that struggles to come to a stop as is. add to that a towbar and side rails.. and bigger wheels and tyres, its amazing that the things can still stop.. especially the hiluxs with 4 piston brakes that fit inside a 15" wheel.

sorry for getting off topic... but it just really pisses me off that we make our cars literally safer, yes they are very fast, but they can out handle and out brake everything else, but because they can out run everything else... we get picked on, and made out to be hoons and criminals.

import owners... funding police christmas parties since 2000.

cheers

Size does matter. Simple physics - momentum. A smart car might have more safety stars to, lets say, a 1970s F-150, but if you hit an F-150 in a Smart, good luck to you. All those things won't count when a car more than twice the weight off yours 'swallows' up the momentum of the small car, leaving minor damage to the large car, and devastating to the small. Crumple zones are designed to increase the time of the impact, nothing more. It won't increase the mass of the car. And yes, I've had experience, unfortunately, of being involved big vs small car. Small car (lancer) written off, big car (fairmont) just bumper and radiator damage. I've known people who had accidents in Discoveries too. They had bumper damage, the other car had to have the whole back replaced.

The difference is that the crumple zones are also intended to reduce the impact on YOU and YOUR PASSENGERS - cars can be repaired and replaced, lives and limbs cannot...

As much as I love my car and wouldn't like to lose it or have to have it repaired (a repaired car is hardly ever the same as it was before), I'd rather lose my car than risk my life.

Oh, and there have been studies done on the safety of a Smart crashing into an S-class Benz of the same vintage, both in head-on and offset impacts, and the Smart came off surprisingly well, with minimal damage to the safety cell.

Lol, I'll go when I could be bother to drive across to world in order to get to your new place :P

Cheers mate. She quite a bit different from when I bought her off ya. Throughout a very untouched GTR.....until now lol.

good man. :) good to see she's getting treated to the good gear. give me a bell next time you're in the city and you can pop in for a beer. I'd love to see what it looks like now. :D
