hey in my r33 gtst s2 i have a bosch 040 , its been in the car since iv bought it and its always been really loud when priming and i can hear it every now and a gain while idling , the other day my mechanic said its too loud and on its way out. is this true cos iv read that 040's are really loud , should i play it safe and get a 044 or just not worry about it? cos i figured its been in for a couple years it should have stopped by now if something was wrong?

Well aftermarket fuel pumps are usually a lot louder than the standard one. So I'm inclined to say its just normal. I found with my walbro and my mates 040 that on long trips the fuel pump gets louder.

And the way its mounted as mentioned can contribute to how loud it is. Mine is mounted with rubber in between the hose clamps and you can still hear it a fair bit when the cars not moving. If it has no rubber mounting it'll resonate even more.

A true way to check if its on its way out is to see if its running out of puff up high. So get the AFR's checked on a dyno or hook up a wideband O2 and check them yourself. Otherwise I'd say there's nothing wrong with what you've got.

+1 for mounting issue.

I paid an extra $200 for sard instead of bosch for my GTR, so i could retain the nicely engineered mount. I still cant hear the pump. I think gtst pumps are mounted differently tho. Make sure all attaching parts are cushioned.

Edit: if priming's loud then the pickup is a problem. Do you notice the noise more when the tank is low?
