Ok guys

haven't been a very active member here on sau until recently when the idea of getting a stagea hit me

I'm currently having a gap year in england making some money (£10/h or aprox AU$24/h selling phones :) but when i do return to the gold coast in january i will have about 3 weeks to find a car and then it will be time to head off to uni in tasmania

me and my girlfriend will be driving down and therefore are in the need of a wagon

this is where the stagea comes in

looking at prices on car sales a s1 can be had for $9000 + and S2's come in at about $11-12+

what i am trying to decide is if it is worth spending the extra money and going for the series 2 with the neo motor

insuance is about $300 more for the series 2 but thats neither here nor there

so basically, my first stagea is gonna be loaded up and taken to tasmania and will probably be sold at the end of my first year at uni

sugestions please

thanks

tom

if youre not planning to keep it for very long i dont see why youd want to buy a stagea in the first place...?

you will spend a lot of cash after buying it getting it on the road, so its a waste to sell the car so soon.

theyre an advanced well built vehicle so if you find one in good condition its worth getting a good service done and keeping it for a while

The S2 is better in many respects ( more power, tiptronic, poss more airbags, better trim etc) but some people prefer the look of S1. But if you are planning to keep it for only one year then I would buy one that is well sorted with minimal mods to help with resale and spend as little as possible since with oil prices inevitably rising heavy wagons are going to continue to lose value and the less you spend

the less you can lose.

ok thanks guys

zoomzoom im only gonna get one that has already been landed

not a fresh import

will be keeping it very stock

and theres only one for sale in tas so supply and demand might help me not loosing much

i was planning on selling it down there as summer holidays are 4 weeks long

which gives me plenty of time to get a silvia when i return to the coast so i will prob just go for the cheapest stagea in good condition

cheers guys

tom

I really hate to say it, but if you're going to buy and sell in such a short period you would be better off buying a BA falcon wagon

stags seem cheap but sometimes cannot be (plus youll get addicted with the modding) , and the falcon will have enough power for what you want

sorry

the only problem with a falcon is that is a ford and not an import

had a sil and had great fun with that now gonna be cruising up and down and might be keeping it a little longer than thought cos the ferry prices aren't as much as in was thinking

plus the depreciation cant be as bad on a stagea as is is on a falcodore

dude my stagea is the f**king bomb i love it to death(mine or it's)

i cannot fully explain how good a stag is

it just depends on what/how long you want it for(you'll probably not bother buying a silvia in the end ....I would'nt)

do you want to tow? cause thaty'll cost extra probably

    • If doing that ^, I'd take the idle up valve out and plug the hole in the pump.
    • You can try capping the power steering idle up valve at both ends if it's old. The valve and the intake manifold. That is something that is known to fail in Toyotas with age and it will suck power steering fluid into the intake and burn it in the engine which can cause issues. Then bleed it again with engine off first. Do like 30+ lock to lock turns with the front wheels off the ground.
    • Hi Brent, I am wondering if you ever worked this out? I have upgraded this unit to a newer one and everything works bar the reverse camera, so i really want to know what plugs are what so I can patch the camera through. many thanks in advance Mike

    • Update:   smoke test all pipes no issues cleaned reservoir   fluid put in ( dexron 3 atf)   steering turn side to side and could hearing  gurgling from steering rack which I assumed was air lock, opened one of the steering rack connections and could see loads of air getting pushed out( not sure if you meant to do that / whether it will re introduce air into system)   anyways, loads of side to side sound was gone. Turned car on, pump was slightly ( barely) wining so turned side to side few more turns and fluid level when car on was almost none in resorvoir which I guess is normal if car is one. Turned car of and fluid was gushing out. Almost 200-300cc was pushed out. Repeated engine off side to side followed  by engine on and same result       going mad now. It seems system is either sucking air in whilst on or there is tons of air which I am not giving it enough time to bleed. Thoughts?   would it work like brake caliper if I open steering rack copper pipes and let gravity pull all air out?   or maybe have a restriction somewhere? What is the red circled item, could that be blocked? It i
