Hi I was wondering if anyone knows if you can change the state of registration of a personal import. My GTR was registered as a personal import in S.A. in 1999 and now we are moving to N.S.W. Are the import laws the same there in regard to personal imports?

Good news - it can still be registered.

Bad news - each state is different as far as registration requirements goes, so expect that you'll need to get an engineer to sign it off in NSW, and possibly have some other work that needs doing, before you can register it there.

It shouldn't need an engineering sign-off Kristian, unless it's got more than the standard level of modification.

The requirements are here: http://163.189.7.150/registration/getnewre...tevehicles.html

Fairly easy, get a blue slip inspection (doesn't have to be at the RTA, a lot of mechanics/workshops can arrange), take documentation and pay RTA.

Oh ok cool - it's been a while since I've done one into NSW. The general rules for interstate transfers for personal imports are basically the same theory as transferring pre-1989 stuff. A lot of guys in SA get caught out thinking they can buy something pre-89 and just take it for an ID check when it gets here, when in reality it's a pit inspection at Regency.

I still don't understand why the requirements for registration for these vehicles are different from state to state, but oh well...

Thanks for your replies. I think personal imports here dont require as much compliance work to be registered as low volume or raws imports. Do you think this would be an issue? i.e im not sure if uprated side intrusion bars ect. had to be fitted when it was complied.

My car has only 3" exhaust, boost & remapped ECU (i dont know how this would affect any emissions testing) and R33 GTR wheels.

It's been my experience that once an imported car has been registered in one state, transferring it to another state is generally the same as any other (i.e. non-imported) vehicle.

That being said, it definitely helps to have copies of all relevant documentation from the importation / initial registration of the car to avoid any hassles along the way.

    • Seeing as it's an 04 model, I would be hitting up wreckers first.
    • No not yet.  Hopefully this weekend if I can pluck up the confidence!  I had to sit in the car at one point yesterday to unbolt the rear struts.  As mentioned in an earlier post when I was putting it together there is still a bit of rotation possible so when I sat in the car, it rotated a little bit.  I near shit myself thinking the whole thing was coming down!  I do 99% of my own shit in the shed but I think I might call on some assistance the first time I spin it!
    • Strong first post. On a Skyline-centric forum. Have you considered actually going out into the world, visiting the actual dealership, and asking the parts guy over the counter? Or at least just call them up on the phone?
    • Should shit that in as for the driver ability probably not
    • Trying to find the plastic under cover for an 04' Forester X. The main under cover that covers most of the front of the vehicle under the engine. This has turned out to be a crazy experience. Normally I can find parts for vehicles, if I have the correct info, no problem. But not this! The Forester is a non-turbo btw. In a Forester parts catalog, for model years 03'-06', it shows part# 56410SA070 as being the correct part. So I go to the local Subaru dealership's website to order it. I type in the part#, hit search and there it is, the under cover. "DOES THIS PART FIT YOUR VEHICLE?" I type in my VIN# and sure enough, "This Part Does Not Fit Your Vehicle. See Similar Parts For Your Vehicle." I click on that and part# 56410SA000 comes up. Looks absolutely nothing like the previous part. Not even close. So I go to a different Subaru dealer website and put in that 2nd part# (56410SA000) and "This Part Has Been Replaced By" 56410SA070, which is the first part I looked up. I thought OK, makes sense. They replaced the strange looking part, with the one I looked up first, so I add it to the cart. "Does This Part Fit Your Vehicle?" I type in my VIN#, and sure enough, "This Part Does Not Fit Your Vehicle." I've basically been doing this with various parts suppliers and dealerships, for the past 4 hours! Does anyone know what the hell is going on?? Thanks in advance!
