those revs sound about right, check on the underside of ur bonnet, mine has a sticker with factory recommendations, and 650-700 is the warm idle, with around 1000 - 1100 for cold start i believe.

the stupid screw you use to adjust the idle is fkd in mine, i need to get it replaced with a new screw cos i cant adjust the idle, so im on about 1250ish for a cold start and around 900 at warm idle :P

thanks for the reply mate,

ahh yeah, the screw on my old s13 was fked too it wouldnt move.

just had another listen to the engine the sound like its coming from the timing belt. but my fan seem really lose it spin really lose. should i try and change the fan 1st b4 going to the timing belt?

How new is your timing belt?

A new one will give off a whirring sound at low revs - perfectly OK. The sound is also more pronounced in an enclosed space like a garage rather than in a carport.

To locate a sound, you can buy a wooden dowel and with your ear at one end, place the other end on different parts of the engine or covers or shaft ends. Amazing what you can hear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I could always pick up VANOS noise on our BMs with the dowel, before the technicians could.

Some posts have mentioned using a screwdriver, but I find that wood gives you more discrimination power over the source of a noise.

thank for the terry

on the timing cover it got a yellow gate sticking saying around 12000km so im guessing that when it was change and by looking at it i think the owner change all the belt and water pump too it look pretty knew.

ill try that out tho

thanks

p.s i can still hear the sound anywhere and the light it make my head go crazy.

woww amazing what you can hear with the screw driver! anyway ive found the sound its coming from the timing belt so what should i do? how to i losent or tighten it? i took of the cover last week it seem pretty tight but not that tight.

Generally they will be noisey when they are just a little bit too tight, though I have heared that it can just be a non genuine timing belt thing.

"Apparently" due to the pitch of the ribs/teeth on the timing belt not being perfectly mached with the timing gears
