This isn't a dissing skylines thread or anything just really interested in what you all think about your cars and what makes you think wtf were the nissan designers/engineers thinking. God knows i love my skyline to death but theres some things i just wish was better like all things i guess.

Theres the simple and obvious ones but more about your personal preferences on the cars overall, accesories, a specific thing in your own car and after market products. This might also be a good guide for people to look out for when buy a skyline. Really just wanna compare and understand more about our cars faults so feel free to contribute.

maybe a template would be good?

Model: R32 Skyline Gts-t Coupe

Trans: Manual

Fault/cons: 1. Fastest speed on wipers to slow for storm rain 2. power steering/hicas system

Comments:

1. It might be just on r32's or my r32 but has anyone noticed how much faster the fastest speed is comapred to the second fastest for our wipers? its not faster at all...in a storm when rain is beating the windscreen and it is complemented by wind i really struggle and can hardly see anything that sometimes i ahve to slow right down so i don't smash into something.

2. there always seems to be something wrong with it nowadays that the cars are much older. lines are either leaking, the hicas system has seized or stopped working like mine, steering goes hard and so on.

interesting thread.

I have 2 WTF were Nissan thinkings:

Year:1994

Model:R33 GTS4 with RB25DE+T

Trans:Manuel

Fault/cons:1. Battery in boot 2. Oil filter stock location

Other comments:

1. I believe it was because of balancing weight... but the battery is in the boot on a platform ontop of where the fuel tank is behind a plastic wall... in my case its got a carpetted wooden wall holding the amps on it... so it is such a b*tch to change the fuel pump or battery.

2. I dunno? trying to make it bloody hard to reach I guess

Finally... I hate the fact that every crapbox/commonwhore has to try to drag us, also the fact that we are cop meat... I want a switch to change my car to a charade!

Year: 1993

Model: R33 GTS-T

Trans: Auto

Fault/cons: Air con & cigarette lighter plug, head lights

Other comments:

My air-con is dead! :D Also I don't like the R33's climate control unit, where if I turned the whole dam thing off, I can't turn it on with fan only without 1st having to turn on the A/C (have to press "auto" to turn the unit back on then press the fan speed so it doesn't blast at me full speed... also I don't like the fact that it doesn't "remember" my last mode, every time I turn it off then on again, it always goes back to blowing air through the top vents & I have to cycle through the whole thing again. Would prefer a much simpler manual A/C control until like the ones found in regular Camrys & Comos.

With my A/C dead, I went & bought a cheap 12v fan, only to find out that the cigarette lighter plug is dead too.

Also don't like the way they designed the headlight operation, why did they made it so when the high beams are on the low beams are off? Due to this, when I turn on high beams, it still looks dim (& I can't see sh*t), the head lights feels weak compared to my mum's Camry.

Fault/cons:

1. it's bumpy as hell.. having to go 15km/h over bumps gets annoying

2. oil filter location.. it's directly above steering racks n stuff.. oil spews all over stuff when i change the filter

3. the f&*kin beeping when you leave the keys in/lights on etc etc...

Other comments:

i love my skyline to bits so i don't wanna list more things.. lol. all these "faults" are so minor anyway. regrets about buying skyline = 0 :D

Year: 1995

Model: R33 GTS-T

Faults/cons: My right front brake squeals without fail, can't see very much over the bonnet, kinda difficult to park, engine oil gets dirty very quickly

1. when its cold, sucks major arse in a car park. Had rotors machined and pads replaced twice and still no improvment.

2. Makes pin point car parking difficult

3. Maneuvering in car parks difficult

4. I change my oil every 3-5000ks and occasionally use oil engine treatments to clean it more and by 2000ks it still starts to go black!

3. the f&*kin beeping when you leave the keys in/lights on etc etc...

There is a little video on how to remove that, its amazingly simple and easy, although some people have said it doesnt quite work for them. Did the trick for me!

1. Everytime i catch a glimpse of my car in a mirror'd shop window etc im always involved in a car jacking...luckily none got on the upholstory

2. Serz though: stock oil filter location, the terrible turning circle, the low front diffuser lip which scrapes on everything, sitting low in the bucket seats its hard to view the dimentions of the car to clear stationary objects etc.

R33 Series 1 GTS

1. No cup holders, I'm sick of spilling shit.

2. Heater takes too long to warm up (okay, girlfriend's complaint more than mine, but I have to listen to her complaints!).

3. Wish I had 3 seats in the back. I'll sometimes jam 3 in the back, but I never feel comfortable about it.

 ahahahahah i would too if i owned a R34 GTR Vspec2

You can turn just the fan on without the AC coming on as well. If the unit is off just press the 'mode' button then press the 'fan' button until you get your desired fan speed. If you just want fresh air to flow in without any assistance from your fan- make sure the 'recirc' button is off and press the 'mode' button.

Year 1998

R33 40th anniversary

1. this annoying vibration has appeared in the back seat behind the arm rest plastic. its something that has come loose in between the arm rest grove and the exterior metal. would be a bitch to find and fix and its definitely something thats come loose most probably from me jerking my car with my twin plate clutch and lightened flywheel.

2. defi gauges and a gtech make it nearly impossible to have decent vision straight ahead

3. huge car very difficult to park anywhere.

4. FRONT BUMPER scrapes on everything and anything. im actually surprised its still screwed onto my car and hasnt completely ripped off.

Compared to a golf v diesel:

Interior light can be left on and it drains battery, it doesn't time out.

Car can be locked with second keys in the ignition.

Window wiper spray is like a 2 year old peeing, vs a carthorse.

When you go into reverse in the rain, the rear wiper doesn't automatically run.

When you wash the window, the wiper doesn't do a second sweep 10 seconds later to clear the drips.

You can't close all the windows by holding the lock button down. (or open them all)

There is no trunk release on the remote.

When it rains the wipers don't start

When you go into a tunnel, the headlights don't turn on.

You can't operate the radio with the ignition off.

The doors don't hold open in either of two positions, on steep sydney streets.

The fuel economy for just short shopping trips is 25l/100km instead of 5l/100km

It is a barge to park and seemingly every bit wants to rub on a curb or speed bump.

You can lock the car and get a blinker flash even if a door or trunk is not fully closed.

No cup holders, no map reading spotlights, no night-time red cabin illumination.

There is no torque at 1500 rpm vs 300nm of torque in the golf diesel.

I feel like I'm driving a model T ford. But luckily people who do drive vintage cars smile a lot.

Fault/cons: dash lights and wipers

Other comments: The dash lights dont work at all.

I think my wiring somewhere is fubared....because when I use the windscreen washers...the front ones dont work,

i.e. they dont spray but the wipers go - and then I use the rear window...and then the fronts work....and rear doesnt!!

something is emo in my dash somewhere....a fuse maybe?

thoughts?

    • Yeah, the latter. No diff should have a centre replaced without checking clearances because its unlikely to be the same as whatever came out. Not that that stops most people just checking a new centre in
    • Major thread necro but how bad of a job is it to DIY? Looking at it online it looks like if you reuse your ring and pinion as long as those are in good condition it should be fine to just pull the axles/front cover and replace the diff that way? Or should I be replacing everything and doing preload measurements/gear mesh testing like the factory service manual mentions for the rear diff?
    • in my list I had the R33 GTR as the best Skyline. Infact I had all GTR's (33>34=32), the NSX, the GTO, the 300ZX, the 180SX, the S15 better than the FD RX7. I had the MR2 and the A80 as 'just' better. I also think the DC5R Integra looks better but this is an 01 onwards car. I also think the FC>FD. It's almost like aesthetics are individual! The elements @GTSBoy likes about the FD and dislikes about the 180 are inverse in my eyes. I hate the rear end of the FD and it's weird tail lights that are bulbous and remind me of early hyundai excels. They are not striking, nor iconic, nor retro cool. The GTO has supercar proportions. I maintain these look much better in person (like the NSX) especially with nice wheels and suspension which is mandatory for all cars pretty much. Some (or all) of these you have to see in person to appreciate. You can't write a car off until you see one in the flesh IMO. Like most people we probably just like/dislike cars which represent certain eras of design or design styles in general. I also think the 60's Jag E type looks HORRIBLE, literally disgusting, and the 2000GT is nothing to write home about. FWIW I don't think the Dodge Viper Gen1's have aged very well either. You can probably see where I rate bubbly coupes like the FD. I know we're straying now but the C4 and C5 absolutely murder the Viper in the looks department as time goes on, for my eyes. Wouldn't surprise me if people who love the FD, also love the MX5, Dodge Viper, Jag E Type, etc etc.
    • I used to hate R31s, and any of the other Nissans that led up to it, and any of the Toyotas with similar styling, because of the boxiness. They were, and remain, childish, simplistic, and generally awful. I appreciate R31s a lot more now, but only the JDM 2 door. The ADM 4 door (and any other 4 door, even if they are unique compared to our local one) can eat a bowl of dicks. The Aussie R31 is also forever tarnished by their association with stereotypical bong clutching Aussie R31 owners of the 90s and early 2000s. I think the Nissans of the 70s (other than 120Y/180B/200B) are far superior looking to the 80s cars. The 240K era Skylines are boss. The same is broadly true of Toyotas. Hondas don't ever register in my thinking, from any era. Mitsus are all horrid shitboxen in any era, and so also don't register. Subarus are always awful, ditto. Daihatsus and Suzukis also don't generally register. They are all invisible. I think the SW20 MR2 looks fiddly. The 3000GT/GTO is like that but way worse. Too many silly plastic barnacles and fiddly gimmicks ruined what could have been a really nice base shape. Kinda-sorta looks like a big heavy ST165 Celica coupe (and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing). I think the 180SX is dreadfully bland. It's not bad looking. But it has no excitement to it at all. It's just a liftback coupe thing with no interest in its lines, and bad graphical elements (ie wide expanses of taillight plastic on the rear garnish). The S13 Silvia is a little better - getting closer to R32 shapes. But still....bland. S14? Nope. Don't love it. S15...a little better. Probably a lot better, actually. Benefits from not being like a shrunk in the wash R34 (where the S13 was a shrunk in the wash R32 and the S14 looked like a Pulsar or something else from the stable on Nissan mid 90s horrors). The Z32 was hot as f**k when it came out but hasn't aged as well as the A80. Keep in mind that I think the R33 is the most disgusting looking thing - and out of all the previous cars mentioned is objectively closest to my precious R32. It's just....real bad, almost everywhere you look. And that is down to the majority of what was designed in the 90s being shit. All Nissans from that era look like shit. Most other brands ditto. In that context, the FD absolutely stands out as being by far the best looking car, for reasons already discussed. Going behind the aesthetics, the suspension alone makes it better than almost any other car.
