040 Fuel Pump, Strange Problem

the way it picks up the petrol is different to the 044, it just has a screen along the whole bottom of the pump that sucks in the petrol, unlike the 044 that has a sock where you can control where it sucks.

so the verdict is faulty pump? i hope im right, im going to take it back tomorrow.

The 040 has an integral pickup on the base of the pump (i.e. it's part of it). The 044 was designed as an inline pump so has a fitting on either end, this allows you to fit a sock filter to the bottom. I have heard stories of 040's either sucking crap off the bottom of the tank and clogging up the integral pickup OR even sucking the bottom of the tank up!
