Does anyone know much about the resanator boxes on the standard air intake?

A guy over here custom made an alloy air intake losing this box.

He noticed that this caused his car to run funny and lost power.

He cut the standard resanator box open and says it has lots of circular chambers in.

Anyone know how they work and if there are any form of aftermarket one's you can fit?

What you're talking about is refered to as an intake plenum and it's there to provide off-idle and low range throttle response for an N/A. It's like a chamber that holds an extra air supply close to the throttle butterfly for accelleration so the engine has air available when the throttle snaps open and the fuel is delivered. Take it away and your engine will probably feel sluggish in the low to mid range and want to stall in traffic, but should be OK at the track. You can re-tune your ECU but that will only go so far.

The circular chambers are there to help with air turbulence and to help with intake sound dampening ( resonation ).

hi guys hesh from the good ole uk here. just want to be sure we're singing the same song. in the uk the term "plenum" refers to the metal intake on the left of the block (as viewed from the front) but what toolman, (and myself) have been looking into is the plastic square thing on the intake pipe)

if we are indeed talkingabout the same part then i guess if the chamber is designed to create as you say an air supply off throttle then an aftermarket one isnt gonna gain much as developments gonna need lots of air flow calcs...

The way I see it, off the left side of the engine ( from the front ), the collective cast metal pipes that bolt to the head are known as the lower half of the inlet manifold and then the upper half of the inlet manifold. Although I have heard of people refering to the upper half as a plenum.

The part I'm refering to as a plenum is also known as a collector. The "inlet pipe" is the part that connects the AFM to the plenum / collector and the throttle body.

Anyway, call it what you will, the black plastic bucket on the right side of the engine is what I was talking about :P

1. Yes ( AFAIK )

2. Yes. It's there to hold low restriction air ( air that has to come through the filter has a higher restriction ).

3. A bigger box probably won't help any. An extra feed "might" help but it would have to be cold air... You have to remember, NISSAN have done a large amount of R & D with enviroments and instruments that simulate everything to produce the best all-round result so messing with the factory design is likely to leave you with improvements in one area but a reduction in another. With that said though, there's always room for improvement and it's fun to see if you can better what the factoy has done if you have the time and $'s to play :)

At a guess, I would say the best low cost performance upgrade for the N/A induction would be to keep the factory set-up from the engine to the AFM and then just install an APEXi pod filter and partition the pod off so you have only fresh / cool air supplied to it. I haven't done this so I'm just guessing :( All I've done is put an APEXi panel filter in. I honestly don't believe that the RB25DE NEO could max out the factory induction system. Sorry for the long arse response. ;)

has ainy one removed this part and or replaced it with an alloy tube or similar?....and if so with what type of results?

Most people that have done this have found the car is worse down low, OK in the mid range & better in the top end.

from your reply it would seem that this box has a similar perpose to that of the NVCS onthe NA varient, specifically to imporve low end drivability, whilst retaining high rev power/torque.

would i correct in assuming then that when at high revs this box is pretty much superfluous? as the air intake charge is going much faster and therefore wont have time to "bounce around" the internal chambers?

1. That's cool. Wasn't having a go at you but was just busy. Sorry if I sounded harsh :D

2. Simply put, Yes. But, in different ways. The Plenum / resinator box / collector / accumulator is more for engine "stability". NVCS is directed more towards performance.

ok read this post with intrest as i have a R32 GTS25 with a early (1989) RB25DE.

butmy question is why does the 25 have this plenum on the intake and a RB30E does not.

Just an opinion but I'd say because the RB30 is a more stable platform being a low tech, lower reving engine.

    • This is a story of my life things, I learned eventually (thanks to someone calling me out) that my enthusiasm for discussing and sharing ideas that it came across as arrogance and I'm like... WTF?!    One thing I'm pretty sure I justifiably pride myself on is knowing that everyone will have things they can teach you, and you're always going to find out that something you think you know turns out wrong - you just don't know what it is until you get there.   Just the bursting enthusiasm that comes with ADHD when you hit something that gives you dopamine dumps can come across like you think everyone else is wrong or don't matter. But yeah, I'm a software engineer by trade and also do tuning in weekends and 100% have long had a reputation for  quickly making connections when resolving problems or forming solutions that I've sometimes had to take people form a long walk from start to end to explain how I ended up where I did when it's seemed "too simple" when I've stated my initial case, and had the "WTF" type reaction when they've realised how much was actually considered haha.   My reward is that I get all the curly problems thrown at me.

I've never seen someone be able to get try and be cranky with me, while they're holding back fits of laughter... 😛   Also, I tell mine it's payback anyway. She has BiPolar.     • I'm not up to date on the latest, but for basic modifications like pod filter, lower springs etc you can get a modification permit at the time of inspection.  For more serious modifications you will need engineering.  Intercoolers used to fall into the mod permit rule but its been a long while since i looked it up.   Either way you will be able to get it registered, just a case of $300 vs $3k .

I’m the new owner of a 1996 R33 GTS-T, I’ve purchased this car over from Queensland and brought it to Western Australia and I’ve found that there is a hole cut out in the engine bay for the FMIC that enters into the wheel well (fender liners are in the boot). For anyone that has had to get their car over the PITS here, will this be a major issue?
