I'd say that depends on who you talk to....

I believe mine runs heaps better with the pod, even before boost increase.

I'm no mechanic so someone will contradict me for sure, lol.

I think on stock it is noticable but depending on mods some say it is less needed, just a good flowing panel filter in the box is best.

if you have FMIC and can make a CAI and a box to cover the pod, may be best option.

also depends on how much flow the particular filter has.

As i said i read through threads in forced induction, they simply compare filters.

Your lucky R31Nismoid has not closed your thread, as there have been a few threads about this and Ash is a true believer in the stock air box FTW.

Your gonna get mixed answers here, cuz its personal preferance and experiance.

I have to HKS pods as it came with the car and they are doing fine.

I would say stock air box or upgraded high flow panel filters are good for about 300 to 400 kWs.

Pods are very good for high end tuned performance cars. As for stock, it does not make much of a difference, pod or panel filter.

Ask Johnny, he did a test on his R34 GTR with an APexi panel filter then twin APexi pod filters and he had quite a gain in kW's.

I now have a pod on my GTST and as for performance i did notice the responsivness was better but not enough difference to notice anything significant, not running any serious mods so may be a lot different for people that are. One thing I did notice for sure is the induction noise, bit louder with the pod on but that could depend on the brand you get as well?

Did you have a decent hi-flow panel filter in there before?

My guess is stock nissan or similar, so of course your going to notice a minor difference going from crap to a decent flowing filter setup.

If stock airboxes can make 400rwkw on BIG GTR's (with the side airbox restrictor thingo removed for the flow in R34's)

Good enough for run of the mill setups below that, plenty of threads on it, Dezz even posted some dyno results which showed such little difference it wasnt worth going pods due to factoring in increased intake temps

I have a Trust Airinx-GT panel filter in my Stag, is that considered rubbish or should i get a better one? Like Pipercross or something else? Any recommendations? < $100. Or are they all much of a muchness.

There is no distinct answer, there are so many factors that can influence the results. Mainly if you standard airbox/filter set-up isn't a restriction than you'll see little to no power/response change.

However lets not kid ourselves must people swap to a pod set-up for the induction noise, any upgrade in performance comes as a bonus. :P

id go Jap stuff, but thats just me. Pipercross doesnt have panel filters for Skylines

just clean your current one

i am still running my airbox with a k&n (fmic, pfc, avcr, exhaust) and at my last dyno session it was causing a restriction. it seems the issue is with the mouth of the airbox. so if you don't plan on modifying your car, the stock airbox is ok after that though you might need a pod or modify your airbox.

Well from reading it looks like the best option for a stock car is just a hi flow panel filter.

Summer coming up and all will mean higher intake temps unless you get a partition which will set you back another $100 and from what people have said it will make very very little difference if any.

So hi-flow pannel filter

-Cheaper

-Defect free

-Lower intake temps on hot days

Pod Filter

-Intake noise

-Better for highly modified cars

This brings me to my next question on Hi-Flow Pannel Filters..

What kinds are there?

What is the best one(s)?

I personally wouldn't recommend using a oiled filter with a hot wire air mass meter set-up. The filament is extremely sensitive and it's common for excess oil to bake onto it and render the units useless.

K&N filters are unfortunately an oiled set-up, most Japanese brands are note.
