engine rattle

The engine on my skyline seems to rattle a bit when approaching 2000rpm in 2nd gear, is this anything I should worry about? Am I just shifting from 1st to 2nd too quickly? The car is NA and has only done 58,000km so shouldn't be having any engine problems.

under 2k in 2nd is going to be putting a bit of load on the engine if accelerating.

too much ignition timing would make this even worse and create an even louder rattle.

check that your exhaust manifold is still secure and has no broken bolts.

i had exactly same sounding problem and was fixed when i put extractors on.

hopefully it's just coz the engine is under load... I'll be getting extractors eventually too so we'll see if that does anything

If it is your engine pinging then get it fixed, because pinging=bad! Not as bad as on a turbo car but still not healthy for your engine at all.

How do you fix engine pinging?

Usually back off the timing a couple of degrees or use better fuel (higher octane). But you wanna make sure it's pinging first, it could be a worn bearing or something in your gearbox or clutch. Take it to a mechanic or someone who knows what to listen for.
