skyla
I've done a search to see if I can find the info I was looking for, but didn't have any luck, so was wondering if any of you happen to know what size oil cooler would be best suited for a RB25DE. I do bit of work on the track and oil temps tend to creep up after a while, so I've had a look at some of the oil cooler kits available and there's quite a range of sizes avaiable, but don't know which would be best suited for my application. 342Four
a 12 to 15 row cooler should be fine ur not running a turbo which heats the oil up further specially when tracking..... Eug
big as possable not true, biggest is not always best. at high track speeds the cooler will do it's job too well and thus your oil will be very close to ambient temp - totally outside it's efficient lubrication range. as above stated a 12 row is sufficient, dare i say even a small 9 row will do the trick. if it runs too cool, you can always block half of the cooler off using cardboard or something. Hesh
what about using a cooler in conjunction with a filter relocation kit? the location kit increases circulating volume, so temps will drop, and therefore in theory you can use a smaller cooler.... ?? Eug
that may be true also Hesh! a relocation kit is also ideal for that added convenience. skyla
Thanks guys, umm there seems to a few of different sorts available theres those that run a thermostat and those that don't, the ones without the thermostat is quite a bit cheaper. The one I'm interested in is a 10 row coller with a filter relocation kit, but doesn't have a thermostat, would this be suitable for my car? or would I be better to spend the extra $$ on a slightly bigger cooler and get one that comes with a thermostat? 342Four
personally i dont believe that we here in aus need to run oil thermostats, however - you are in NZ and it could be a different story it depends on what sort of ambient temps it gets to - if it can get really cold when your tracking, like 10degC or less then it might be worth running a thermostat so that the oil actually has a chance to heat up instead of constantly being cooled and never having a chance to warm up Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/245237-what-size-oil-cooler-for-a-rb25de/#findComment-4267511 Share on other sites
screamin'
9 or 10 row with no thermostat should be fine Rach. Much bigger and you will struggle to get the oil up to operating temp during sedate driving. That'll be why some of the larger kits will have the thermosts on them. On the rallycar I'm just going to do a remote filter mount (eventually) and not worry about a cooler at this stage. My motor will be doing a lot more hard and also free revving on the loose stuff than yours will on the seal, so I wouldn't say it's a must, but a cooler is good piece of mind tho. skyla
If I lived in Australlia I'd be in, but I'm located in NZ and by the time you do a currancy conversion and factor in shipping costs, things don't look quite so appealing and the price is on par with what we pay locally Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/245237-what-size-oil-cooler-for-a-rb25de/#findComment-4278519 Share on other sites
