....You should checkout the Gainward GS 4870's, they are the pick of aftermarket cooled ones. Dual fans, mofset heatsinks with a fan above the mofsets/ram.

The setup on them is excellent.

Yeah that would keep temps in check, wish they all came out like that. Also, Palit do a dual fan card edition but, I believe the Gainward one comes with better software.
Cant wait to get my hands on a 4870x2 mmmm two cores on a gfx card!

So then do we all predcit that these new cpu's will transfer the tech somehow onto a graphics card in the not too distant future and vica versa? what i mean is with the 4870 graphics cards using DDR5 ram, will that be used soon in normal everday pc ram?

Will the tech in these new quad core cpu's be used on graphics card somehow or another?

In recent times the tech in GPU's has advanced somewhat quicker than what CPU's have and the CPU has generally been the bottlneck when you have mid-top of the range GPUs. From what I've read, the only benefits of the i7 cores over the C2D & C2Q for gaming is that it will namely improve multi-GPU scaling and increase fps (esp if the game is CPU bound). So really it's the CPU that is catching up to the graphics cards to help extract better performance.

Doubt we'll see DDR5 RAM anytime soon, as latency timings would be somewhat an issue atm and would be taking a backwards step...like getting a PCI-E sound card :O

The main thing I'm looking forward to the new CPUs is actually the new X58 mobos. The stock Intel ones only supports Cross-Fire like usual, but the other manufacture ones like Asus have added an Nvidia chip to it in conjunction to the intel chipset to make the board compatible with both SLI & cross fire. So if you are looking for external 2 card SLI/Cross fire, you no longer need to buy a specify board for it.

But then again, considering the current price of the asus ones to be over $500, not looking too smart of a purchase yet

I hope AMD comes up with something soon, they are lagging way too far behind...

Theres also an video on the nvidia site where they got the mythbuster guys to build them some auto painting robots one stands for the CPU other stands for the GPU & shows how each works differently. The CPU robot paints the picture 1 paint ball at a time sequentially while the GPU paints the picture all at the same time using all its paint balls.

Yeah that would keep temps in check, wish they all came out like that. Also, Palit do a dual fan card edition but, I believe the Gainward one comes with better software.

Although, you do know that ATi stuffed on them ye?

The factory fans only run @ 20%, hence why the cards get so damn hot.

Changing the fans closer to 40% (or around that) drops temps down massively on the stock fan

As you can tell, ive done my google-ing lol.

True, they do run pretty hot on default program settings. With my MSI O/C HD4870 (780Mhz) the fans run @ 26%max and on idle will sit 60-65degrees but @ 40% I see temps drop up to 18degress.

Yeah, creating and altering profiles on CCC help alot to keep things cool - I have TV (32%), gaming (42%) and benchmark mode (55%=3550rpm). Although, on the latest Catalyst version ATi have now added a manual fan controller function, making it easier to play around and change fan speeds.

    • My idle is set at 950rpm though - Moving the timing around 20 degrees is not really what I'd call a calm idle. That said... neither is chop, by definition. The LS ECU likes to adjust timing to hold idle as opposed to air. It'd work, but generally speaking there'd be a discrepancy in the base idle and the IACV would want to move the timing around anyway to maintain said idle. I think I'm just going to keep the timing steady anyway. Preserve my engine mounts.  My aircon is now officially regassed. As the guy was reversing I noticed my reverse lights do not operate, along with my reverse cam. This is a bit distressing, because 100% of guides talk about which wire to connect to backup cams as "the goes with the [other color] wire". Often when doing conversions. Unfortunately the R34 colour wires aren't documented Unfortunately I had a T56 Magnum gearbox with it's reverse switch, which also isn't documented. Unfortunately there's definitely not documentation for people with both of these in the one car. Unfortunately I forgot. After many hours of this, I have a reverse cam and reverse lights again. The wire going through the trans tunnel to the reverse switch had broken. Upon inspection, it looks like this one wire had about 7 spade terminals and extensions in it.. for reasons I cannot possibly comprehend. I also spent the 750 hours required to clean up the wiring behind my head unit which now looks like this: This is a monumental improvement relative to what used to be there WRT triple gauges, head unit, traction control, wideband controller, and whatever the f**k OEM stuff still exists there in various states of connectivity/needed. Next step is to check in at the Exhaust shop to see/confirm how much clearance I have, to decide what mid mufflers or 'resonators' (which are just straight through, narrower mufflers) I can add and hopefully cut out a lot of exhaust leaks, pinhole, v-band or otherwise. But first step will be to 'take a look' before the next step.
    • Fark the AFM card and Nistune, Haltech Nexus S3, DBW, cruise control, flex fuel, dis dat.
    • It's most likely the bolt/bush where the cover bolts back wore and allowed cover to move forward.
    • Still haven't put the injectors and R35 AFM in so we can tune the bloody thing for the HG highflow it got mid last year! I think I can forecast the upgrade path to a bigger twin scroll, external gate, Haltech, flex setup, Samsonas, dis dat, etc will be .... a while away!
    • Should have taken that opportunity to slot in a twin scroll turbo setup. Maybe next time.
