alright guys its been doing this since last week and now its getting pretty annoying cause i'm a noob and i ahve no idea what it could be lolz.

the car is all good when i start and everything...car runs normal and so on..but every now and then the car will just seem like its engine braking or simply losing power for about 2 seconds then it goes back to normal. during these times i'll still be on the accelerator and it still loses power. the car doesn't switch off or anything..it'll just go down in revs abit then go normal again. sometimes it'll happen when im clutching in to slow down and at this point it'll drop down the revs till it stalls.

i have a feeling it might be a faulty afm? or could even be my spark plugs? but i wouldn't have any idea on how to check. if anyone can tell me how please do.

otherwise if this sounds similar to what you ahve experienced or are experiencing please tell me what u think it might be and i'll check it out. thanks

my r32 does the exact same thing... sometimes bad, sometimes just jolts a bit and carries on.. feels like its running out of fuel.. im pretty sure its the afm, as i can feel it change from the afm to 02 sensor at 2500rpm, runs smoother, but can still muck up at higher rpm, but ive had it before where it wouldnt let me past 2500rpm, just hit a rev limiter.

saving up for a safc so i can get a brand new z32 afm.. will also change 02 sensor and fuel pump for shits and giggles.

breaking news...drove to skool today and it didn't do it at all?

really weird...i have a feeling now that if its not any of the other usual suspects could it be a bad batch of fuel? maybe fuel with water as they have reported on the news?

cause i filled up with bp the week it started happening...yesterday filled up with vortex and it didn't happen. i'll see what happens on the way back home if it does it again..if it does i'll know it can't be fuel.

could it be a bad fuel issue

sounds exactly like what happened to me, and it was AFM.

Get your hands on a working one and borrow it for a little bit, see if it does it again. If not then you've solved your problem. If so, then you know to keep looking.

Bro check all your vaccuum hoses...my 32gtst was playing up when releasing accelerator pedal

hmm..it didn't happen again for the 1 hour that i was driving around after skool..pretty weird?...i had my timing belt done recently,,,maybe its not put on properly? or it could of been a bad batch of fuel?

get this... my car drives fine for the 1/2 hour trip i do to work everyday... not a problem... come night time though, when me and my g/f go for a drive, it happens all the time... cant boost it or anything, freaking annoying, just dont think the car likes her, which is fine with me, she is taking up cage space.

check the afm wiring, that its not shorting out somewhere.

cheers

Linton

hey man this sort of thing keeps happening to me too with my r33. well now i've actually figured out how to actually stall the car. its not random. try this alright:

when you are 4th or 5th gear, boost the car a little bit to gain a bit of speed. then let put the car in to free gear(neutral). if it stalls or rpm drops below normal you probably are having the same prob as me.

think it mite be something to do with the turbo winding down or BOV settings?

that would be your BOV... I have r33 that does the same thing, ive adjusted the bov and it helps a bit, but still does it once or twice. I cant get my hands on a stock bov which is even more annoying.

    • Well, hydraulic lifters will get noisy if they are dirty/fouled in some way, and exactly how that manifests will depend on exactly what schmutz is where. There is a procedure on here somewhere for dismantling and soaking/cleaning them. Replacing them with new is about 50% of the work and about 5% of the money!
    • Thanks for the reply @GTSBoy this is is a hydraulic lifter engine. Yea right i did not realise the lifters were supposed to be compressible while installed. I could push them down but i had to lean almost my while body weight on them.  I have never heard of a lifter/ lifters ticking only at hot idle and getting worse the hotter it gets. I have owned a few jdm cars with noisy lifters. This noise is slightly more subtle, it is more of a sharp gentle metalic tic than the solid and more loud tapping I've heard on lifters. I have used a metal rod, alloy tube, hose and stethoscope and could not find the source of the tick. But it appears to be loudest on the actual engine block behind the exhaust cam gear and next to the oil filter. I had mate (40 year old mechanic) go over it with me and he couldn't find it either..  Could it be a cam seal issue of some sort?  Cheers
    • This seems problematic and unlikely at the same time. Vanilla RB2Xs have hydraulic lifters. They do have "zero" clearance, but only when running with oil pressure inside them. When not running, you should be able to compress them and obtain heaps of clearance. RB26s and Neos have solid lifters. They should have ~0.3mm and ~0.5mm on the inlet and exhaust respectively. If they have zero clearance then bad things are happening. With nothing else being wrong, it would mean that the valves would be held slightly (ever so slightly) open when they are supposed to be closed and it should have all sorts of problems when running, caused by leakage in/out through the valves. Or, zero clearance can indicate severe valve seat recession. None of it is good. Have you used a piece of hose as a stethoscope to try to localise the noise?
    • Sorry for reviving an old post, but I'm having the same hot idle tick issue. Did anyone ever find out what it was?  I have checked/ replaced Injectors Coils checked Lifter clerance (is at zero) Checked Cam lobes Replaced exhaust gasket and studs Would appreciate any advice this is driving me nuts
    • There's a huge reason manufacturers are tuning in dead flat torque curves... Make them reliable (and more drive able)
