Hey guys,

I'm getting my car ready for paint and removing all the necessary stuff, just a bit worried about damaging the trims trying to get them off. Anyone got any tips for me?

I've done a search(came up with a can opener :) ) and had a look through the workshop manual but it only gives a cross section of the trims. I'm assuming they just clip on but thought I should ask before getting heavy handed with it.

Trims to be removed:

Top trim of rear window

Top & side trim of front window

Door & quarter glass trim

Drip rail trim

Cheers Dan

Harvo, it's not as daunting as you may think. I remember thinking the same thing prior to painting mine.

Front pillar strips that curve towards the sill just unclip with a little bit of force. Under that from memory you can undo screws to release the piece that hugs the windscreen.

Both front and rear top windsreen strips unclip, but be careful as the clips holding them can be rusted. These are screwed to the body.

The door trims along the top can only be got to once you've removed the door skins. You'll find about 4 small self tappers holding this strip. If your lucky they won't be rusted out like mine were.

The rear window trim is like the door trim, it has a series of self tappers that you can access once skin is removed.

As for sill, I left it on and masked it along with the trim that follows on from the rear window trim.

Hope this helps. just be patient with the strips that unclip, pry them gently as they can easily be bent out of shape.

Thanks mate,

Have all the trims off of the front and rear windows (only broke 1 clip) but when you say "door skins" do you mean the interior door cards/trims? when I hear door skin I think outer sheet metal of door. Either way I think I'll just mask them off.

Thanks for the fast reply,

Dan

Yea harvo, door cards if you like, those bits that require you to remoe the arm rest and window winders etc. It really is east to take them off and undo the self tappers and if your painting your doors it saves masking inside.

    • I don’t really have any ideas how to set the timing on the CAS 😂, sounds like the top, sounds like it maybe misfiring as well as ticking,  got the box sorted 😌, must of been a air bubble on the clutch side
    • Use a 2' length of hose (that's 2 foot, not 2 inches) as a stethoscope to localise the source of the ticking. From cam covers? From exhaust or turbo manifold gasket? From injectors? From lower down in the engine? Etc. Use a timing light to set the timing. Put Redline Lightweight Shockproof in the box. It's not the very best thing for the box, but it will take a box that refuses to engage a gear with other oil, and make it engage a gear. I had to put it in when I installed the R33 box I have in my car. It would not select ANY gear when running. Smurf jizz made it work. That was >10 years ago and I still use it. I'm stuck with it now. Failing that - rebuild the box.
    • Well done Duncan. The fuel tank bulkhead lid is also in great condition (some of mine were stuffed). These are now out of production and good ones like that are becoming hard to come by.
    • Wow that's a steal, you've done well there.
