if it was green or yellow or purple no isue, but neons on a car cant b red, blue or white as it can b seen as immitating a copper.

also law is u shouldnt b able to see the light source, ie under car, cant see the neon but see the glow so ok

I was under the impression that you were allowed to have neons... You're just not allowed to have them on while you're driving. I hear multiple different stories

Maybe I shouldn't have just ordered those blue neons...

honestly... not much to whinge about mate, very easy fix and a small price to pay, I know it may not seem fair but as cheez said it is the law. the price that some of us have to pay to get are skylines back to what they believe to be acceptable and remove performance parts can be enormous!

one thing to note though, I have a blue led strip lighting up the rear garnish of my car to show the word skyline ( check my avatar) I have never had a problem.

one cop once told me its ok because it doesnt flash or "dazzle" as the cop told you...eg flashing or pulsing.

does yours pulse? because that could have been the main reason why.

i got blue leds pretty bright in the license plate place...but as above..you can only see the glow and all times i been pulled up never had any problem with them. sorry to hear about that fine ..maybe because it was visible and at the front of the car. eg cops maybe i dunoo...damn cops sometimes

no it doesnt flash, just solid colour red, its even a neon tube so for those that know they aint as bright as LED lights. 3 weeks ago I went thru a booze bus and the coppa said "going for the nite rider look hey" and i said "arhh yerr tryin, lol". see these cops will pik on whatever. Im in the hunt for a r34, so our of curiosity wat are you allow to have and not have, I heard you cant have BOV? is that so...

I think it's written somewhere in ADR which applies to the legality of all lights of vehicle in Australia. I can't remember the exact wordings but basically:

All forwad facing headlights should be amber (white-ish xenon are allowed if they're factory fitted ones),

All backward facing taillights should be red

Indicators should be yellow or orange

Reverse indicator white

etc

No other colours are permitted, e.g. no green, purple, blue etc.

It's all ruled out so to avoid confusion. Imagine having following a car with orange brake lights and red indicator.

How would I realise that the car is braking hard if I was expecting to see a red brake lights but instead it was lighting up orange? Worse even if people have blue brake lights... imagine the car in front brake hard to avoid collision with a kid and the following drivers behind took a few extra milliseconds to think "what the heck does those blue lights means?" before realising it's all too late and you end up with a serious accident.

Keep the neons for the autosalon, mate.

there is just 1 thing i should add, with regards to colour placement on the car. u cant have red & blue light from the front and blue only from the bak. over the license plate is diff, as long as the ligh source is hidden

yeh i have the same light strip but in white which only goes on wen the reverse lights go on. its good as its brighter than the reverse lights and i can see when im parking at night. BONUS!!!!

dont think your allowed to have a BOV, sound polution or what ever. be some were in the ADR. stock bovs on rb's work fine, been told you may have idle issue's or somthing other problem putting aftermarket bov on .

someone WILL correct me, as i dont know first hand

Im in the hunt for a r34, so our of curiosity wat are you allow to have and not have, I heard you cant have BOV? is that so...

Well for one, R34's have a stock BOV.

An aftermarket ATMO BOV is illegal - a simple check of the law would confirm this

(and the fact there is a 15+page EPA/Roadworthy sticky thread in this section)

As for the neons, serves you right for having them in the first place :D

There was a massive operation on all weekend from the police, so im not surprised.

Either/or - SAU isnt the place to come and have a whinge. The law is there and no-one can change it :)

Check page 4 of the doc attached.

I don't remember the details clearly enough, but a law was passed around 1914 making it illegal for any "civilian carriage" to have a front facing red light.

The red light was restricted to First Aid and/or Police "carriages".

Like I said, it was about 10years ago I was told but I believe that this is the general jist...

As an aside... Why the F*CK would you put ghey neon on any car? (Fully sick Fast an Furious mate!)..... lame :D

* Personal opinion my not be shared by others *

I would never use them while driving. I just want them for show when I'm parked. I guess unless a cop checked inside my engine they wouldn't know I had neons in there.

since your eng is mid you could probably get away with it if its red so it looks like a brake light.

Yea thanks guys for all the postive and NEGATIVE feedback, thought I just ask as i didnt know and thought people wuld have a better idea and experience of this, and no i am not here to whinge, so mayb u shuld get over it. as i am only asking for advice and what other experience people had been thru. geee anyone will have a go at you these days.

From what i've been informed on a few occasions by police when asking about the matter.

Neons are okay under these conditions:

1) They are not blue/red/white outside the car. This is because they are the same colours as emergency services.

2) They can't pulse. Similar to above.

3) The tube/light itself can't be visible outside the car. EG: You can have a neon under the car, but can't be so close to the edge that its viewable. You should only be able to see the light from it, not the actual tube itself.

4) It can't be distracting to other motorists. Now from what I can gather, this is up to police discretion. You can have neon's, but obviously you cant have so many that your whole car glows like a las vegas strip club. When talking to the police they have informed one or two under the car or a couple in the drivers and passenger footwell is fine. Just don't try make your car a christmas tree.

This has been from my experience from talking to a few cops. Of course when not driving you can have as many on as you like, but while driving its a lot more restricted.

and no i am not here to whinge

ORLY?

omg these cops were so sad,
i said i was once told i could have neons in my car and his reply was they officer may not have must experience as me, and didnt know. thats bs!
omg cops will pick on u for anything.
see these cops will pik on whatever.

Maybe I have a different view of words to you, aside from the spelling part

    • As an ex-skyline owner Going off how these things are now "modern classics", I would keep the twins and just "refresh" bits that are required for reliable power and have a car you can take out for a cruise whenever you get the itch As a idiot who cannot leave things alone Going deep into the "rabbit hole" is a easy thing to do, as previously mentioned, once you start it becomes a slippery slope, wirh lots of supporting mods, and possibly rebuilds, and unless you have a bottomless pit of funds, the car can spend most of its life sitting in the garage,  broken, waiting for parts, or building more funds For a classic like a R32 GTR Basically, a reliable OEM+ refresh, that isn't a broken garage queen, is alot better than a car that you build, then break, then fix, then break again And it isn't just the engine you need to worry about, these beasties are getting on in age, and all parts are getting, and have got, expensive, the days of picking up cheap replacement engines and other driveline parts are well and truly over The funds not spent on going a single with quality parts, and with all the other other bits required to make it happen, could be spent on refreshing alot of other parts A wise man once said "If you cannot afford 2 GTR's, you cannot afford 1", I also believe he said this about 20 years ago when you could pick up a clean R32 GTR up for around $20k My advice for a R32 GTR (the one and only true Godzilla in my mind) is to think holistically about the whole car, the body, the power train, the suspension, the brakes, and the driveline SAU is a wealth of knowledge with decades of Skyline experience,  from stock, to OEM+, to modified to varying degrees, to full on or weekend or dedicated racecars, as well as full on money pits that rarely leave their garage Treat the old girl nice and give her what she deserves, you are a lucky man to own such a classic car
    • For that price you could buy the hypergear turbo (big fan as I run one) and the Haltech ECU..
    • +1 for the Elite 2500. Get some new knock sensors while you are at it (pretty cheap), look up the TAARKS Nissan knock sensor kit. You may also want to get new coils (R35gtr) while your at it (assuming your on stock ones), as they are a liability. Mine started right up and idled fine on the base map. Also go MAP over MAF, as said above, Haltech make this super simple right out the box. Another fanboy of DBW here, Outsider Garage from your neck of the woods make some nice conversion gear for the R33 (that’s where I got some of my gear from).
