While Quality is up there at least the Jap stuff fits, Eg the Hypertune Plenum above and the High Octane Sump that leaks.

I would be Pissed if I spent 3k on a plenum and it didnt fit straight on.

Yes, although the design of the hi octane sump is good, it really is very poorly finished. Casting is VERY rough and like you say a lot of them leaked in the beginning. I suppose attention to detail is what makes Japanese products eye candy to us all. Having said that, not all Japanese products are as well developed as some found in the States and here in Oz.
Ive never seen the Hi octane sump up close, I guess with the Plenum, Its not hard to source some shorter studs, but if you are paying labour by the hour it would be a pain.

If the wasnt good enough I wouldnt have used it. Living in Japan is like being a kid in a candy store. Being able to source parts at good and discount prices I could have used the Japanese gear but I did some research and saw the response guys were getting with the Hypertune plenum and went that road. It definitely wasnt about saving coin.

Yeah there was slight problems which were easily sorted out but if you want to crack the Japanese market it just has to be perfect as the Japanese customer wants and expects and has perfection. You got to remember the Japanese customer has been brainwashed over and over into brand buying and its a extremely hard market to crack and its pretty hard to sell them something that doesnt have some famous brand on it.

The Aussie gear is right up there but just need that final polish off of quality to crack their market.

Thing is at the end of the day the proof was in the pudding..The combo of the Garrett -5's , the Hypertune plenum, some very cutom head work and HKS Step 2 engine kit has produced a package that has impressed the shit out of the HKS mechanics. They reckon its a very torquey beast and they were most impressed how well it held max boost and its very wide torque range compared to what they usually get out of the 2.8

One part that had them pooing in their pants with interest was the RIPS custom Oil Catch can/washer bottle. They reckon the workmanship was awesome and bummer was we couldnt use it as had run the inlet pipe for the Hypertune plenum through the inner guard and ended up not bing able to fit the RIPS custom Oil Catch can/washer bottle.

Its now been sold to a Japanese friend of mine and is currently being installed in a HKS Step 0 build.

On a very happy note.. I got confirmation the car has arrived in Australia and now time to to get it cleared through customs and off to get complied..

Definatly not saying the parts are crap, Just a little suprised that they are not perfect given the price.

Hey mate wasnt saying you were. Just wanted to clarify that I wasnt saying they were inferior products, which by far ,they are not.

I was lucky with the price as the bottom fell out of the Aussie dollar and buying with yen the aussie parts were bloody good value.

So this stage of the car is finished and the car is in the process of getting back to my hot little hands..Not too long to go.

Got a bunch more parts to go on including gearbox, carbon tailshaft, ARC intercooler, Nismo 400R kit (not sure if I'll fit this or sell it) more carbon goodies etc etc.

By the way the wheels in the pics Advan TC 2's and some quite stretched 265 tyres. Just put on for shipping as the rims will probably up for sale !

Its now about getting it all nice and pretty and sorting a bullet proof drive train and more importantly....driving the bloody thing !!

It does bolt straight on, 12 bolts are used instead of factory studs. Lots of Japanese stuff is fitted by removing factory fixings and using another fastener to bolt it up. Doesn't take much brain power really, some of the questions the Japanese were asking us for help with on this build was a bit puzzling as it was really pretty straight forward. Maybe Mark and Pete at Hypertune should supply a scratchy sketch, some instructions in another language and a dozen bolts with their plenumn's to keep up with the Jappo's excellent engineering.

As an owner of a full HKS piping kit i found that although the kits look fantastic in an engine bay, The finish especially on the inside is nothing short of atrocious. For the premium yen that you pay for the full kits (156450yen for bnr32 and 139450 for 33/34 GTR) one would expect the product to be of a high standard. Instead, the finsh was not much better than the $300 Chinese knockoffs which can be bought on Ebay. Like the Chinese kits, they really need to be extrude honed to be considered finished. Maybe the kits have changed since the last few that i brought in for friends etc, but in my opinion the Trust GReddy piping kits are a far better kit.

EDIT: If those 2 pieces of pipe that you have for your blow off valve are from an off the shelf kit then it looks like HKS have lifted their game. They definitely look much cleaner inside! Sorry for the rant!

Ok, using standard studs it does not bolt straight up as you can tell by the pictures and second, no bolts were supplied with the plenum.

As you say it doesnt take common sense to figure what to do and I'd say that the Japanese would know a thing or to about modifying parts . Maybe you should do a trip over there and have a suss of a few workshops to see their level of workmanship.

As for the questions the guys from HKS were asking, well they were concerned and always asking questions, as they knew the car was going back to OZ and would have to pass compliance as a personal import and therefore were super over cautious about doing work before checking and making sure whether it was going to be ok for oz.

The plenum was not a straight bolt on using standard mounting studs, as it needs different bolts to mount , also it needed sensor mount fitted and last the throttle linkage mount was not a straight bolt up as mine was slightly askew and needed the throttle linkages adjusted to suit, something they said they dont need to do to the Jap plenums.

Overall it was not anything major but like I said, they asked questions first before going ahead with any work and yes they figured out straight away what the needed to do but wanted to be sure by asking.

As for asking questions..who is us ??

I asked a very few certain people on this site who I new had used the parts in case and at the time asked and respected their opinions regarding using such parts and mounting etc..

Some answers I got included cutting original bolts to suit, which I thought was great engineering.

If you read the thread, you will see my whole aim of using the Aussie parts was to show the Japanese that we are making high quality performance parts and also that I believed that these parts were as good if not better than what was on offer in Japan. I cant see anywhere in the thread that conflicts with this and I cant see anywhere I've said any different !

The only things I have said is that as a product it wouldnt cut the Japanese domestic market there due to the fussiness and sometimes ignorant mind of the Japanese consumer. Something you could understand if you if you have done business with them.

When you have products from Trust, Nismo, Greddy, Jun etc that come ready to bolt on straight from the manufacturer you can see your product has to be of high standard to compete.

The parts I chose were, as I said, because I believed they were the best part for the build and the issues that there were, were quite easily resolved.

If I dint think they were suited they would be in the bin !!

The Hi Octane sump was supposedly first one of the new type and there was slight mounting issues as it needed some grinding to sit flush and slight leaking on the welding which again was addressed with relative ease.

The end of it all is I'm happy with how its all panned out.

The HKS boys were highly impressed with the parts and said they would happily use the parts on future builds but would prefer if parts came all ready to bolt on as one it saves time and also saves customer money if having to modify.

As for there quality of Japanese engineering ...how many Jap performance parts have you used or are on your car ??

Maybe you should go over there and go to a few tuning shops and have a look at their quality of work and engineering.These guys pride themselves on their workmanship and tuning and spend hours of work, a lot for free,to get things perfect.

And again, dont get me wrong here, my aim of using the Aussie parts was to show that our products are right up the top in performance and quality, all I've said is that to compete in a market against the likes of names like Jun, Trust/Greddy , Nismo etc, in the Japanese market place, the Aussie products have to be at the same level for use.

Yeah mate, my piping was pretty spot on. I was going to go with the Trust piping but got offered to good a price..

And good news is I just received a call saying the engineer has signed off on compliance...

Next step... roadworthy certificate, which I think will be a headache.

    • +1 for getting a screen off alibaba, CarPlay/Android Auto is vastly better than whatever navigation cars had 10 years ago. I got an Android screen for my 2015 BMW, huge difference. Fully compatible with factory stuff including iDrive controls.
    • Yeah, my offer was more to show exactly how rough and ready the rig can be and still be useful. Youtube vids will definitely show cleaner setups. Same concept though.
    • I would guess the seal has gone down at the speedo drive and gearbox oil has crept up the drive cable sheath and fouled the speedo head.
    • Any updates on this? Although not a stroker, nor built especially loose, my car has the exact same symptoms. Although I feel they were not there to begin with. Since rebuild with forged parts I have done about 40k kms and it feels like during the last 15k or so, the oil consumption has gotten progressively worse.  Compression test showed - what I thought at least - similar 10-10.5bars in each hole without oil. I have not yet done blowby test though, due to limited garage access. #2 plug is the looks the most foul and that was the one with 10bars. Nothing in the breather tank. I only recently disabled PCV and left only the hoses running from the valve cover via smallish tank to turbo intake pipe there and did some mildish 2nd gear pulls so the car was definitely on boost (1.4bar or so). Removed a hose from the tank and it was basically dry - meaning, the wipe I used had basically no oil on it. Last time I checked, the turbo and IC piping seemed dry as well (will have to see about that again after those pulls). For the past year and a half though, the car has been driven like a granny would for 99.99% of the time, since it mainly serves the purpose of carrying the family around nowadays. A lot of slow, stop and go city driving and most of the trips it barely sees any boost, but gets up to temp properly every time. Although there can be weeks it is not started at all. The car does not smoke, or at least not that I can see. (CAT is in place though). There is slight visible sweating at the Ex cam cover seal and I recently tightened the oil cooler lines as there was some mist on them too. It runs and idles extremely nicely and feels all around healthy. Like TurboTapin, I too am suspicious of my turbo. I have had IC pipes pop out from 1.6-2bars of boost a half a dozen times during the years. The turbo is a HX35/40 hybrid. So, a very similar mystery. Around 1500kms and a litre of oil surely cannot disappear to thin air. Apologies for the wall of text, not sure if any of the above is useful for best guesses/things to check next.
