Haha... everyone is going Hypertune these days :)

Not worried about losing the ITBs? Spose with that much power you wouldn't really care...

Have a closer look DOOF...its a hypertune ITB manifold. Note the short runners, the mounting point for the linkages and the lack of a mounting flange on the inlet.

Its the same manifold we run on our Superlap car.

OOOOOH!

Last time I checked, their website doesn't say they do that! There also aren't any for RB25 on the website...

Don't spose you want to spoil me and say they DO have an RB25 plenum Paul?? :)

me?...spoil you...not a chance

The sump is supposed to hold about 8.5 litres and has fitting for return line from head to sump. I have remote oil filter setup and line so oil change will be bloody exxy!!

The plenumn is as Dirt Garage said. its from Hypertune and for RB26. Guys from HKS wanted me to use this.. http://www.endless-r.co.jp/pe-ji/orijinaru/gtr_saji1.jpg but I decided against single throttle setup and wanted to fly the aussie flag a bit and show em what boys down under can do , so went the 90mm Hypertune and keep the 6 throttle setup and hopefully more response.

Question I do have for Dirt Garage or anyone else is... if it was your engine, what oil pump would use?? HKS boys want me to use theirs, told me to steer clear of the Jun pumps but I was thinking of going the Tomei pump...any reccomendations or opinions??

I use JUN or Tomei for my big builds and have never had an issue with either provided sump capacity is ample.

Well was back at HKS today and block has gone off to the machine shop to get the full treatment and wont be back to early feb.

Still waiting on some parts to rock up from HKS headquaters but things starting to roll along which is good. Their workshop is pretty massive, got the full tour today, there's big undergound garage plus upstairs garage plus they have temperature controlled room where they do all there machineing work, theres the dyno room , plus 3 service pits plus 2 level parts customer service shop..

Anyway not much to report on but hopefully over next 3 weeks block and other parts will be back from the machine shop and engine starts getting put together. They are doing a step by step photo disc so will have other pics later.

heres a few from today..they aint the best as it was -7c today and definitely wasnt wearing the right clothes to be standing around the garage freezing my gonads off..

This was one of the customers cars...700Hp beast..Its got its winter wheels/tyres on, summer it runs big side skirts. The V Cam setup is HKS Limited Edition..only 30 made and this is no 20.

  • 1 month later...

Been awhile since I posted anything but the block finally came back from the machine shop around feb 20th and since the boys have been busy putting all the go fast 2.8 kit together, all balanced and prepped and wacked together. They reckon the block was one of the cleanest ones they have got straight from nissan as far as the casting went. They seemed pretty impressed.

Anyway heres a few pics from yesterday and first unveiling. I have new head coming from Nissan which will get sent to NAPREC for maching then back to HKS for the port polish etc, so looking at another month before the head will go on then so bit more thumb twiddling and chasing parts before handing over the car.

Still havent come up with final decision on turbo setup but have ruled out the 2830's and V Cam as thats another ¥800,000 plus ($12,000 plus aussie) and that coin will be better spent on new OS giken box and some suspension mods (Nismo Link set)

Any input on turbos be much appreciated. I'm looking at HKS 2530's , HKS GT RSS, and possibly modified Garrett 2860-10's.

Anyway hopefully over the next few weeks I'll get a few more pics up as more bits and turn up and get bolted on.

The first look..

Still not alot to update on...

Spent the day out at HKS on saturday trying to finalise what head work will be done, what cams etc..Got to thank Paul (Dirt Garage) and Russ and Gav for their input and advice..cheers fellas..

Pretty much looking at this setup as far as head wise..doing a como of high response stage 2 kit and drag kit..bigger valves etc...

Whats on the list is as follows

Naprec High Response kit plus combustion chamber mods and machining.

Also water jacket will be modified plus using Jun Titanium valve retainer plus HKS modified Valve lifter. . HKS step 2 valve springs. HKS will do the port and polish.

Cams I'm looking at either HKS/step2-10mm lift 264 degree in & ex or tomei poncams 260 degree in & ex with 10mm lift. Still havent decided which to use as yet but have to make decision by end of the week so machinig can be done..

Turbo's..mmm still undecided but still have some time to decide as head will be awau for a another month...

I did get to go for a drive in their race prepped WRX...bloody fun car to drive as power to weight ratio is pretty damn quick and its running around just under 400 HP but its the suspension setup thats killer, real smooth on the bumps but handles amazingly but hey the can throw the best of what they sell in.. Shocks are a modified Hypermax Sports setup and are amazingly smooth.

On the way out I pulled up next to this Sierra Cosworth..rare as hens teeth over here..

    • 2 does "sort of" applies, maybe......but looking at what parts would be needed for the swap to get engineered, registered, and insured, and basically that's everything under the car, the modifications the make it legal would be problematic and horrendously expensive, all for a street car that just cruises around and hits a few twisty roads on the weekends Also, from looking at the NSW rules and Regs, with all modifications that is required just to make the car safe and not twist itself to pieces, and then actually get registered for street use, may still be impossible nowadays As for 1, when you add in a fresh engine, fresh transmission, rear cradle and diff, tailshaft, suspension, brakes, cooling, and all the other fabrication required, your probably looking at up to $100k to do it right, all for a 20 year old MX5 that is over engineered and you would never be able to actually use the power it has on the street, much like your beastie, which I love, but you actually track that thing and can use all of its powers in anger, in a safe environment  Hell, the old Bogan Cruise Ship had more power than I could use on the street, and in hindsight, I went a bit silly on that thing, it didn't really need the 500hp it had for what I actually used the car for, it was fun, but basically unusable on the street if you value your licence  As for cams, yeah, I'll probably book it in for them to get installed and tuned soonish, like next month after MX5 Mania are back at work....... and yes, I've already sent a email to bin the turbo quote and quote instead to install cams and a new Fluidampr balancer that will suit the 2.5 better than the OEM 2.0 balancer that is swapped over for the 2.5 install, as the balancer needs to get pulled to time the cams it's a while your in there sort of thing I did think a bit about flex fuel for a laugh, but being na, and no where really around locally anymore to get E85, I've binned that idea, so no sweet sweet corn smells are set for the car I wish E85 was more of a standard fuel, it's better for the environment, better for tuning, plus that sweet sweet smell we all love As for fitting in the family, that's not needed, as everyone in the family already owns a car that can seat 5 humans comfortably enough, the MX5 is "my toy" As for buying a car that is already built, nah, I would rather pick and choose my parts, I enjoy the process, and in the big picture, the additional cost is well worth the enjoyment, and the occasional frustration, I get out of doing it, albeit with other people spinning the spanners, and me, just paying the invoice 🤣
    • Excuse me, but 2) does apply 1) Would also apply if you consider how much is spent in the alternatives. Also there's the option of 3), buy one pre-built that you can put your family in (it's me, it's my car)   That said, I went on a ~500km drive the other day. I didn't use anything more adventurous than 3rd/4th gear at about ~3000RPM and 50% throttle and I was going as fast as anyone has any sense doing on a public road, with enough grip to the point where I didn't want to go any faster. I was obviously under the limit of the current car etc etc. MX5 with 2.5 N/A to achieve the same speed would be more fun for any road scenario. Maybe consider cams. I wouldn't boost it. The use case is just not there and it won't actually make the car more enjoyable unless you really do plan on wringing gears from 1st to 3rd (at least) at 100% WOT on a public road to 150+kmh.
    • Great if: 1. You had all of the money for everything else that is required  2. Lived in a country where you could actually do this and drive it legally on the road Sadly, neither applies to me As for the turbo, I am having second thoughts, mainly for engineering/registration legality reasons and insurance  Not saying I've finished doing stupid things that I probably should do to the MX5, but boost, and V8 engine swaps isn't on the cards Strange, but true
    • I like this page, better than that silly turbo kit   https://v8roadsters.com/product-category/engine-conversions/engine-conversion-lsx/engine-conversion-lsx-nc/
    • That would be my Shoei helmet
