Gt35r Vs Garrett T04z - Discussion (just Post In This Thread To Create A Database)

Recommended Posts

i'm glad this thread got revived.

I'm going to look at a 33 GTR running a t04z with a 0.70 housing on the weekend and had a few questions I'm hoping someone can shed some light on:

1. The car is making 364kw on e85 at 24psi. Does that sound right? I would have thought these turbos make 450kw on e85 comfortably... .perhaps the rear housing is really holding it back??

2, From the dyno the guy sent me, full boost comes on around 5k.... seems like a really laggy setup.... power cuve is not linear at all (to be expected)

3. How does this compare to a modern Precession 6262?? Seems to be more laggy with less power!

I'm really just trying to guage if its the actual turbo holding the power back (360kw in my mind is low for this turbo) or if there is an issue with the setup/motor.

Cheers

Umair

Firstly, is it a stock engine, has it got cams etc. Will make a difference. Is the turbo t3 or t4 split, does make a difference. .84 rears will make 400+ on 98 so a 0.7 should be there about on e85.

Need to see the supporting mods too like dump, exhaust, intake etc. Also injectors may be maxing out so limits things. Boost wise, it should be higher on e85 if the other things can cope.

So you need to find out that info.

Dyno should show power ramping from 3800ish with a 0.7 rear and within about 15% of its max as the graph starts to flatten. But by that time things happen very quickly so you probably won't even care. :D

6262 are very good.

Yeah I'd say it's the small rear holding it back. I had .84 rear at 26psi making 450rkw.

Hey mate. Did you run restrictor s in you oil feed? What size line and what restrictor. Cheers.

yes, stock engine

sale add doesnt mention cams so going to assume stock

again add does not metion split so going to assume the one that is the cheapest haha

intanke, dump, exhaust, injectors are all up to scratch to make the power.

i think he hasnt wont the boost up either due to the fuel pump or he's afraid to pop the stock motor....

would it be worth spending the extra $3k to switch to a 6262 and tune? seems like its a better turbo in every respect (lag + power)

I love the zed. So you are talking to the wrong person. If the car is good and engine is healthy just drive it as is. If later on you want to change the turbo, its just a bolt on and a tune I suppose. Don't stress too much just make sure the engine is up to scratch and get a pre-purchase inspection from a reputable Gtr mechanic.

-4 braided line with 1mm restrictor. Jun pump, pressure at top of stock gauge when into it, and zero oil/turbo issues. Did track/strip road and 30k kms. Sounds like something isn't right with yours.

Great. Thanks for the info mate. Exactly the info I was looking for. Was it a garrett or hks? Cheers. Edited by XGTRX

Has it been tuned yet, XGTRX?

No not yet. Had a couple of niggly issues so just want to sort them out before the full tune. A bit of timing scatter after the engine freshen up, so looking at options.

Your 83/74 looks awesome BTW.

Ah right :(.

Did you do anything funky with the engine freshen up? Raise compression?

It would be good to overlay the -5's and a T04Z if the same bloke is tuning it.

The 8374 should go alright :).

I know its an old thread but I have a question with anyone that are or were running TO4Zs.

I am finding mine a bit oil blowy with a 1mm restrictor in a -4 oil feed line. Anyone have any issues running a 0.8mm or less restrictor. I am still on a run in tune with a 5k limiter and pushing 5+ bar engine oil pressure, so thinking might have to reduce the flow even more seeing that the zeds don't like anymore than 3 bar in their feed line. Any wisdom would be much appreciated.

Where's it blowing oil from?

Nah just a freshen up. Comp test showed one cylinder a bit down so changed the head gasket as it failed near cylinder 2-3. Otherwise engine was perfect. While at it i changed the rings and bearings, not that i needed to.

I think a bad batch of fuel did it to me about 6 months ago as after a fill up and a thrashing I could hear a bit of det at low rpm. Maybe the timing was also scattering a bit up top, because I have a bit of an issue now, don't know.

As for the turbo being blowy, just getting some oil in the bov piping, so front seal I assume. I was told the -4 feed would be ok without a restrictor, then spoke to rotormaster an they said 1mm restrictor minimum because i assume my engine will make at least 7 bar at full noise. Most of the garretts need about 7psi minimum and 40 psi max or they blow oil through the seals.

Seemed to have settled it down with the 1mm restrictor but may need to go 0.8mm as still getting a bit of a puff of oil, but that may be just a bit of oil left in the piping. One of the guys I know had to run a -3 with a 0.8 restrictor to solve his issues.

They were the issues anyway.

    • Hi soviet_merlin, We appreciate your concern regarding this possibly being some sort of PR/Political hype, I assure you that is not the case, I wish we could claim something like that, but in this case, we merely reached out for comment on the basis of the outrage we too felt, as those heavily in the automotive industry. Ps. the original source in the social media post is CarExpert not CarExplore.    Best, CE.
    • Made a bit of a discovery, but while I was cruising, I randomly decided to test to see if it worked and it showed up on my IC7. The entire time I tested it before, I never thought to turn the ignition on. I only tested it with head lights turned on but with the ignition off. Huge oversight on my end. I’m a dummy. I know.
    • G'day all, I have drilled and tapped the hole for the relocation of the timing belt tensioner. That was straight forward. I'm unsure if I need to also put another hole for the smaller stud that the spring behind the tensioner catches on (this is how it seems to work in its original spot). Or do you not use the spring behind it and just torque it down? Thanks in advance, I did a search but couldn't find anything related and it doesn't mention it in the rb30det sau guide.
    • Hi All,  just thought I would provide an update as I know smooth (Matt) was on this forum from 2003.    my brother Matthew passed away end of may 2024 at the age of 41 from liver failure. I am not sure how many of his original team krazy friends are still on here or active but thought it reasonable to let the forum know.    if you have any photos or pictures it would be great if you could share them.    it took me a while to work out he was active on here.    thanks so much
