Hi i have been having random misfires after i have caned my R34, it has never beeen enough to bring up any fault codes so i assumed this was the coils starting to pack in.

but i just started the car and error code 21 came up , remember this has been a off again on again missing problem for over a year and now it shows up a fault..

Does the ecu have a feedback sensor stating that a coilpack has died?

if so how does it do this when there is only a 12v, a signal and a ground wire?

or is the third wire a feedback wire??

i am building up an ignitor pack as we speak just getting the dwell timing right and a few more bits and pieces together but i am wanting to know how the ecu recieves its feedback and if there is a feedback loop?

cheers

  • 3 weeks later...

pretty sure that the ecu just looks at the resistance in each circuit, and if anything seems out of spec, throws the error code. I know that's what it does with the detonation sensor circuit on my car.

It detects non-consecutive firing (no change in load on the 12v line that would normally coincide with the firing signal pulse) that's why it throws up the code. Trying to fit an alternate ignition system will also throw up the code and put you check engine light on permanently.

Forget the igniter pack, just fit a set of Splitfires suited for the R34 and be happy in the knowledge you'll never suffer ignition issues ever again :)

cheers for the info guys, i was going to get splitfires but had no cash and with the exchange rate at mo would cost me heaps (NZ $)... plus i wanted to build a circuit to market for the people who wanted the wasted spark setup but did not want to dick with old ignitor packs and looming, i now have a great ignitor circuit and looming and coil pack setup to start marketing that is plug in and play but still have to get around the 21 signal error

cheers
