Why do you say turbo timers are only useful on on track cars?? when every manufacture of turbo cars recommends idling your car for a period of time after driving the car hard to cool the turbo down....sitting in the car park for 2 minutes cooling the turbo is not my idea of fun... hence turbo timers on the street cars are a practical idea sadly not legal... just a point of view not a diss!!

Turbo timers were used on old trucks etc because their turbos work really hard and with the mineral types of oil these machines used, the oil would get overheated inside the turbo lines due to the heat of the turbo itself and harden which means next time you use it the turbo gets no oil and bang.

Thing is, this was decades ago and oil technology has changed a lot which means oil does not just harden and clog your turbo lines (providing it is changed when it should be). Turbo timers are fairly pointless around town anyways because you wont be pushing the car near its limits and if you do most of the time you would drive normally for a period of time before you park the car anyways.

If you're thrashing the shit out of it, just drive it normally for a few minutes before you park it and it should be perfectly fine.

youre not gonna sit around in a parking lot idling for 2 minutes though. no need for it. unless youve been caning the absolute shit out of your car, taking it easy the last few k's of your drive, and idling for 30 seconds while you get your shit together when youve parked (which is more than ample time) negates the need for a turbo timer.

You said it. When you've been driving hard. Unless you've driven from Adelaide to Melb in 5 hours, u dont need that on a street car.

If you track it at lala, it could come in handy but its just as easy to let the bugger idle for 2 minutes naturally. And i dunno if there is a rule or safety issue regarding the turbo timer, given that it keeps the engine running when the key is removed (you certainly dont want the fuel pump providing more fuel to an engine fire for example)

Thing is guys, the road rules are there, theres not a great deal one can do about it. Its in your own interest to have your car as roadworthy as practically possible. I know I hold my cars roadworthy status a lot higher than the law would, however I could still get a drongo defect me because he doesnt know what to look for.

It may well get to the stage that most import owners should have a) the Owners manual printed out b) the ADR's printed out c) the roadworthy rules specific to SA, d) the service manual for that particular make of car and finally e) a photocopied record of all work done on the car and any engineering certificates

Cronic, any chance u can scan that manual of yours? My car never came with one and I'd love to get a copy...

Read the cars manual.

Mine states that if you've been driving at over 100k's an hour for more than a certain amount of time, let the car idle for at least 30 seconds.

How often to you drive at 100km/h and hit the brakes pull over and turn your car off??? Only time i let my car sit for a minute or 2 is if im giving it some in the hills or at Mallala, any other time its not needed as most turbos are oil and water cooled.

People who drive down the shops and leave their car running on a turbo timer makes me shake my head :)

You can indeed get the, provided the car hasnt been defected, i know of my uncles, roommates, cousins, best friends, neighbour, whos internet buddy, got a weekend pass for his shitbox cause he wanted to go to the beach.

:worship:

If its defected, who knows, you'd be best off calling rego dept like peat suggests

hahaha.......well my uncle's, wife's, sister-in-law, on her father's side, but twice removed from her uncle's, brother's, 2nd cousin's, neighbour's, friend..........(deep breath)........begs to differ!! :)

Sorry pete your spot on that the permits now require you tell the person behind the counter the exact routes your going to take.....

I remember when i had to do that and i was going to regency FFS but its the law and you just abide by it i guess.....

just thought id add to the above argument, when the cars parked idling it does not get as much cold air so in some ways its better to just take it easy on it before parking as apposed to leaving it running for a min after. but meh i always give it a lil time when i stop anyway as mines not a daily so im never in a rush to be somewhere when i drive :) takes some time putting up sunshades n clublock on etc u really you need to buy a turbo timer to save you 10seconds?

and yes when you on defect you need to tell them where u going for the permit and its printed on the form what roads you are taking. have your directions ready when you go to buy 1 they a major rip off and its nearly cheaper to get a tow truck for some of the jobs. i heard we had a sau member that provides a service cheap :)

+1 I had to write an exact route. Written on the permit itself.

Been to regency a few times. This defect thread sends shivers up my spine

 Woops sorry guys did not mean to start a debate about turbo timers in the defect thread. :) All interesting points of view... cheers!! I suppose it comes a lot down to personal taste and mainly really driving style I live in the hills so my car sees a fair bit of boost most of the time or driving on track.I do the slow down drive b4 stopping as suggested as current ride has no timer...previous did..and found timer handy.

Best of luck to the guy in the purple GTR :) getting the defect off and to anyone else going through that

Was that purple GTR the one I saw @ the Mt Alma hill climb??? :D Just heard they are going to start crushing hoon cars in 1 month :domokun:

Luke you will find that a lot of people in here have got daily's....

So in other words to answer the CF bonnet question....if you have your car as a daily then i wont but if it only sees the road like once a month like mine then nothing to worry about

I'd still worry about it, just worry less

  • 2 weeks later...

so i my fiance brought this r32 from melbourne we flew over yesterday and drove it back , got back last night. the car had boost controller, pod filter, front mount and exhaust.

so i hid the boost controller and the exhaust is not too loud, and made brackets for the pod filter.

went to get id check at my local police station today to come out with a canary.

not for a front mount, but because you can move the pipe that goes over engine fan about 1cm movement, and also beacause it had a pod filter.

apparntly pod filters are illegal even if they are held down tight. WTF been through id chacks and regency checks 5 times with other cars no worries.

and the front mount pipe needs movement cos the engine moves, WTF

still got the defect no matter how much i tried to explain about the pod. And he was going on about that he thought i was gonna put a bov back on it, i was like what the. i think too many of them have read the sunday mail articles and are trying to be heroes

BEWARE PEEPS!!!!!!!!!!!

could not believe it.

    • Hi everyone, I’m Dave from Canberra. Here's a few pics of my 1992 R32 GTST coupe which I imported back in 2006. Only mods so far are HKS Hi-power cat back exhaust, K&N filter, ATC Volanti steering wheel, Pioneer stereo, amp and sub. This was my daily driver up until 2015 and sadly hasn’t been driven at all in the last 5 years due to marriage, work, and kids taking up most of my time and spare cash.As such its in need of a bit of TLC and one of my goals for this year is to get it back to running condition and maybe look into club/historic rego. I’ve joined SAU so I can ask a few questions along the way (although I promise to google Current Problem +SAU beforehand!)
    • From talking to the mx5 guys the NC doesn't actually need bonnet vents like the earlier NA and NB models, due to a better designed cooling system and undertray design There's plenty of them used as street cars and weekend track toys running anywhere from around 170 to 250kw with stock non vented bonnets, I initially was going to get some bonnet vents, but, as they are not actually required, I'll put vents on hold for a while and just monitor temps, though I do need to get something to actually monitor engine oil temps though, coolant temp can be pulled from the OBD2, but the oil gauge in the car is not actual oil temp, it is only a calculation based off coolant temp and RPM ☹️ They do recommend upgrading the radiator, which I have already done with a triple pass, and the only other thing they recommend for a street car is heat management, like I talked about above to protect bits in the engine bay from radiant heat, and to either replace the nearly 20 year old plastic coolant expansion tank, which I have done, or get a aftermarket alloy jobbie for some bling They did also say that if I wanted to track the car on occasion a oil cooler and sump baffle would be required, and as I already have had a sump baffle installed when the engine was out......... I'm going to get a oil cooler with a thermostat....... just in case I do eventually track the car, but probably not, but still maybe...🤪
