hey guys ive just bought a rebuilt 26 it was rebuilt with forgies ect.. about a year ago but before i bought the engine i had it refreshed with new rings and bearings, ive been told to use cheap mineral oil and take it up the mountain and load it not reving past 5000 rpm and also not to baby it

whats the best way to do it? how long do i need to do it for?

take it for a 200km drive around the hills, come home drop the oil then cane the bejeezus outta it.... just hope someone refreshed it properley not just slapped it together as no amount of running in will compensate for a slapper.

Bed the rings on the dyno - tune it up on the dyno - drive it however you want

all this up hills, varying rpm etc etc, old methods for old motors.

As long as you bed the rings thats all your worried about

The days of using cheap mineral oil to bed in rings, cams etc are long gone. There are purpose engineered break in oils that you SHOULD use. I run and recommend Joe Gibbs 'Driven' break in oil and have had good results so far.

Fill it with their break in oil, start it when you're ready, keep the revs up above about 3000rpm for about 5-10mins (try not to let it idle at all) and then go dyno it. Once it's tuned, drop the oil, change the filter and fill it with your chosen synthetic with specs as per your engine builder. I use Joe Gibbs 10W/30.

only think i reckon is to use crc in bore, moly assembly paste on bearings and cam followers....

hmm already assembled, my bad. Well hopefully your mechanic did that already.

my style :rofl: if i built it thats my run in, but someone elses build i prefer in the hills that way i dont hear the tears :laugh:

That, was a dam interesting read. I know what ill be doing if/when i rebuild.

Totally clears up why my mates Civic he rebuilt (12.1:1 compression, 306' cams, 10,000rpm etc etc..)

used to smoke all the time. He nana'd the thing for 5000km i believe, only ever hitting VTEC once. Blue smoke used to piss out during deceleration. Shame a valve snapped and cracked two cylinder walls/pistons not long after...
