for all that look for the water temp needle to move, dont. it is not the indicator that your car is ready to be driven.

all the engine need is oil to lubricate its moving parts, hence we have the oil pump to do the job which starts the moment we turn the key.

fir those who said that it is a waste of fuel to warm OUR skylines up for a few minutes, please reconsider. what about those moments when your on full boost and chewing up shi t loads of petrol?!! not a waste of fuel at all brother.

I personally would like to call these warming up procedures a "long term investment" instead. after all, warm her up cool her down is the name of the game! simple:)

i hope u guys realise that idling ur engine for long periods will not help ur engine last longer . have u ever heard of cil bore glazing ?

thets what happens if u idle it for long periods . if u want to sit in the car for 1-2 minutes thats fine but idling for 10 minutes every day its a sure way to glaze the bore .

yep, i for got to mention. it is actually not a good idea to let the car idle for a long period of time as wrxhoon said.

i heard that the mixture will lean out. i have actually tried it my self with my A/F mixture guage. it leans out after about 5min after looping for a while. this is bad for your plugs also.

just keep tapping the throttle every min or so and it should be just fine.

the engine is not designed to idle , not having any load on , so when its not under load no pressure on the pistons or rings thats why it will glaze . believe me there is no advantage to idle u r engine to warm it up maybe ok for a minute or 2 definatly no more just drive off and take it easy until it warms up . siting there idling it will take a lot longer to warm up as there is no load .the engine is not as eficient when cold cause its designed to run hot the hotter the more efficient it will run thats the reason u have a thermostat so it will warm up quick . if the materials used in the engine could tolerate higher temps they would tun them a lot hotter .

ron if u want to sit there idling u r engine for 10 minutes every time u start it then do it but dont think u r helping it cause u r doing it more harm than good . its like some people when they run their engines in they think that they should drive under 80 kmh and very low rpm all the time . thats wrong too the rings will vever bed in promply like that .

glazing the bore happens when engine rpm remains constant for long periods of time, idling for example...

what happens is that the cylinder bore will wear out or get polished(hence the term glazed) between the distance the piston is travelling for long periods at a rev range up and down the bore. Due to the wear by glazing, above and below this distance the bore will be smaller making a shoulder, and when revs increase, the piston travel will also increase, the shoulder on the bore will destroy the piston rings prematurely...

this is especially common when running in re-co engines ...thats why you shouldnt drive at constant speed/rev with a reco engine until you have done a few hundred k's...and never idle for long periods....

Another bad thing about letting a car warm up idling for too long is that the engine is running rich and thus you get more bore wash.. and hence more wear in the bore and piston rings. Also you want the operating temp to be reached as quickly as possible (in a gentle manner) to get any condensation outta the oil and CC, which produces acids which attack metal. An engine takes 3x as long to warm up to operating temp idling than it does gently driven. FWIW I let my car idle for 30 sec and then drive off....

well sumamrised demon dave... can i stress the don't drive straight off after starting part! and from what i have read it makes perfect sense not to idle for 10min (that period of time is bloody stupid anyway!)

ok ok... guys... maybe saying 10mins was what made the arguments here... i agreee... everyone should not idle for too long... and should not start off and drive off.... :(

once again... thanks for the lovely advice.

reason i wanted to ask about warming up was because it is such a trivia thing but often over looked... and we should always keep up with the maintence of performance cars anyways.

i was letting mine warm up for 10mins, then was going easy for about another 1mins to let the engine and gearbox and everything warm, with the gearbox you can feel the curnchiness and then after time it gets nice and smooth

but now i think ill only give it 5mins and then take it easy

but then again i have remote start so starting it is easy :D

I always let my car warm up before driving off. Like 10 mins, when the temp start rising. Now I know not to.

But I feel that the car doesn't drive as good or as smooth on idle if I don't let it warm up completely?!

this is an old argument.most wear is one when cold.also the fuel washing the bores ect.sitting with cold engine running must be worse than driving easy.

mine is very slow to warm in winter[well above 0cel],I often have the radiator air flow partialy blocked off.so I can understand the problems in cold areas.10-15 km before overdrive is allowed to shift.

I looked at block warmers and pumps,if any one knows of a good one well under AU$400 I like to know about it.

Thought about a jug element and a pump [off merc,bmw,vw or vectra].

add saftey switches so one dont fry.

davehoos 10 - 15 k before it reaches normal temp ? is that the coolant temp u r talking about ? thats to long if u r thermostat is working nornal it should take no more than 3 - 5 k .

as far as going to overdrive ( auto ) it depends how fast u r going if u reach say 80 kmh it should shift it doesnt matter how cold it is .

change the oil in the trany , it may fix that . as for block warmers we dont need them here , not cold enough to worry about .

    • Yeah its bad eh. Ey! Watch your mouth. Yep, spot on. The rear's are always gone too though from brake checking. I had them perilously close to a tree that we had taken down. I think the tree peeps may have taken it. Either for a trophy, or accidentally.  
    • f**kin' yikes! That insulation is the shittest stuff I have ever seen. You need to do an insurance job on that f**ker, pronto. WRT to the washer cover, I would have said that there'd have to be some at a wrecker, then remembered that it's a BMW, and reasoned that every single wrecked one would have been tailgating and so the front end would be trashed.

    • Ok, so I got myself some X1 wheels really cheap to try out, they're a bit different and I like them but they're really narrow (18x8) they are available in staggered 18x8/9 also but really hard to find.  I kinda dig them, but not as much as the F10 19's I usually run, so these go into the wheel pile.         As I mentioned in another thread, I got a new exhaust. It's an off-the-shelf stainless one that fits OH-KAY. I don't love the tips size and how far they come out the back, I think I might cut the tips off and replace with some smaller (~3") ones that don't extend as far. It sounds really good though, I'm not sure if its just in my head but the car feels a little quicker, more responsive.      I fitted an eBay special front lip. Surprisingly it fit perfectly and all holes lined up. Its a little rickety but I haven't put any double sided tape on yet, I want to clean the front bar up where it has scraped the road a lot and fil in the number plate holes (or, get body coloured wrap to cover them - is this a thing?  I'm not sure if I'll leave it gloss or pain it matte. I really like it though, I don't particularly like the front bar without it, I don't really like the M-Sport and to get anything else is just too expensive. That said, I might need a new one now anyway as I dropped the car onto the jack after forgetting to put ramps under the front wheels. It bent a lot and while it did go back to normal after I got the car off the jack, I do fear I have not done it any favours.    Lastly, my headlights died. Different problems in each. They have gotten much dimmer over the past year or so, I put new (uber expensive) OSRAM bulbs in them but to no avail. One of them pointed at the ground and the other just kinda did its own thing with light working sometimes. Yeah, check this 18 year old BMW headlight wire. I reckon I know why they were stuffed.            BTW, the yellow and black is the power to the Xenons. Yikes. I hunted around an researched my options here. I would have loved to just get a replacement harness but not a thing. My car has adaptive headlights, that is they rotate left and right with the steering wheel. Good condition used adaptive xenons were over $700 each, non adaptive were around $400 each, but I couldn't help but think that they're all around 18 years old now, surely they'd have the same problems. So I looked at newer LCI headlights but they were even more expensive and I couldn't confirm that they'd be plug and play with lots of people having lots of opinions so not worth the risk.  I ended up getting brand new Chinese headlights from MARS. They're very close to OEM with only the angel eyes being a bit different. I didnt want crazy turn signals or sharp DRL's or anything. Not my bag.  They're not adaptive, I thought thats a feature I wouldn't really miss. So I coded that out.  The lights are awesome, they look so nice and they take so many years off the car. The angel eyes look great and the headlight brightness is ridiculous. I was so used to the old ones, I didn't realise just how bad they were. The new ones use the OEM bulbs, Xenon ballast and leveller motor which I was happier with. The only issue with them is that the rear cover is held on by SEVEN screws. This will be a nightmare to get to and open when I need to change bulbs.   
    • Now that you mention it I can see those too. More subtle. The lighting and low resolution makes it hard to assess super well what's going on but what is visible is bad enough to pull the motor.
