Aftermarket Ecu(haltech) From Stock Ecu

I currently have a R33 S1, GTS-T, a couple of minor mods, 10psi of a MBC, r34-GTT side mount intercooler, exhaust and intake.... keep in mind this car is an everyday driver....

im happy with the current power it makes. It is however running a stock ecu with 10psi.....therefore you see a big black smoke exiting the exhaust if i give it some stick....

I have a friend who is selling me an haltech interceptor ECU.....my question is, is it worth the conversion??... what will i gain from it?....drivability?...more power?? smoother power?? ...better fuel consumption?....what is the most noticeable improvement i will gain from an aftermarket ecu??

Because once i have bought the ECU, i have to take it for a tune as well.....which is $400-$500.....

Has anybody tried the haltech interceptor??....

who is the best place to tune if i do decide to get it??...

I can tell you lots of reasons why not to do this...

First of all it's not a full ECU. Just a piggyback. So you are still running from ur stock ECU

ok.. here's my story,

I bought the Interceptor about 2 years ago and it costs 300-400 just for wring it.

took it to 3 different tuners still nothing but disappointment..

It can't control boots cut, MAF cant be clamped

I'm only running 10psi. I even called up Haltech and they admitted that interceptor may not work on R33 well. (something like Interceptor can't get R33 triggers correct )..

Anyways if 3 different tuners can't get it right it has to be the unit...

Man ... get a full ecu or even SAFC or Emanage will do a better job than this.

but hey I'm not anti-Haltech, their full ECUs (e11) are very good units if you can afford..

There are soooooo many options out there for R33s... and as far as I know and from my very expensive experience Inerceptor is not one of them

it's worse driverbility, more fuel consumption etc ..etc...

Ninja, i think you need to find a good tuner, many have had good results with the minor mods you have. Another ecu you may wish to consider for a smaller budget is an emanage ultimate. Both are heaps better than a safc. Having said that look up the thread in the stagea section about the Jaycar fuel trimmer, ive had good results for up to 200rwkw with the stock ecu.

Finding a tuner to do it right could be a problem....from the sounds of thing....i was going to get c&v performance in carringbah to do it....but not after the senninigans that you guys mentioned....might rethink my option

basically, you should be able to clamp the MAF at 5V using the interceptor so that the stock ECU would not boost cut, Tuners say that it's impossible to do this using interceptor.. so through out the rev range (in any gear), 3k, 4.5k, or even 5.5k it boost cuts..there were so many other issues tuners mentioned but I don't know how to explain. First I thought it's a tuner problem and kept changing the tuner.. and after 3 top rated tuning shops, Im convinced this unit is not for my car...(I learned the expensive way)

Same time had a friend using an interceptor in his Supra (uses a MAP sensor) worked perfectly running well over 300rwhp

I got 266rwhp at the moment where my turbo could easily push over 300... But I'm getting the stock ECU remapped. hopefully remap will work fine and I can use the interceptor on top of that if I have to..

Have you considered ECU remap or Nistune?? both these are cheaper options .. If you are not planning any further mods in the futuer, remap is ideal.

Ok, a interceptor will work perfectly in any model skyline from R32,33,34. Yes it does clamp the boost cut signals and yes it will control the fuel and timing by intercepting the original signals going to the factory ecu. It will even control the factory boost control solenoid. In the case of a supra for example you can even use the interceptor to clamp the signal to the speed cut and do away with the extra cost of purchasing a speed cut defender.

There is not one company in WA that has been satisfied with the Emanage unit which is actually just a piggy back unit the same as a Haltech. 90% of all problems relate to the installer and the tuner.

I 'm surprised that Haltech would ever say that they cant support an interceptor on a R33. just check there web site and you will see a base map for an interceptor there to suit R33.

A PowerFC is a good cheaper alternative to a stand alone ecu but I believe that the interceptor will suit the application of minor mods a lot better.
