Welcome aboard - all of these issues have been dealt with here at some stage or another, so a search will answer all of your questions. Some of these topics have even been covered in the past two weeks!

welcome mate, like the boy's have said search any topic on stageas and you will find it's been covered to death, forget about your nav system, synchro mode when on transfers 50% of drive to front and rear wheels for whipping v8's at lights :) when off the road and drive conditions are detected by various sensors and the front wheel drive force will change from a 0:100 ratio(rear weheel drive) to 50:50 (4wd) depending on conditions.....no 4 wheel steering, and your a bit unlucky with the turbo (gcg hi-low unless you can afford a t/kit) what happenned there up the boost to much ?

goodluck.

What makes you suspect you have blown the turbo?

I recently thought I had "blown" mine but it turned out to be a loose hose at the inlet to the turbo.

Do you have a boost gauge? If so put on hand brake, put in drive, put on foot brake , then rev till you cansee boost coming on. Listen to hear any difference to the sounds the engine/turbo make.

If you think then it is the turbo you are in for a reasonably difficult job to replace it, but dont rule out a leak in the plumbing.

Check all the hose clips for tightness before undoing them. Chech you mannifold for broken studs. RB engines are a wee bit notorious for this. I had four broken studs, including the two I broke when dismantling, so I had exhaust leaks at three poihts on the mannifold. I also found a crack in the mannifold across where the turbo bolts on. Check turbo for end and side play.

A local guy was able to remove the broken studs without taking the head off. Search the Yellow Pages for someone who can do this. Ask the Sydney members for assistance, dont forget the Skyline forum, there are plenty of guys there to help you.

Just as a matter of interest for all, this is what it cost.....

OEM gaskets, studs and nuts.......................................$247.00

Second hand exhaust mannifold................................... 50.00

stock turbo.............................................. 450.00

Stud extraction............................................................100.00

Od bits and pieces, a new spanner etc...........................100.00

TOTAL$947.00

Oh yes, a large box of Bandaids. You will need them.

One other thing, I did the conversion on the intake pipe. Actually two, next time I take the turbo out I will go braided hoses for both oil and water.

The Stagea feels so much better now.

    • looking forward to your t56 swap man its a game changer if it works!
    • So, when are you trying the new GR86 or BRZ?
    • Uncle Duncan Yeap, FI Interchiller  Works well, normal IAT's cruising with the WTA only went from 50°c+ to 25-30°c with the interchiller  Before, when on it hard, the IAT would see 80-90°c, now, the highest has been was around 38°c IIRC IAT is measured under the blower hat I recommend it for the street or strip where your only on it hard for 10 or so seconds, but it wouldn't be efficient for sustained track use as it would heat soak from the AC turning off or whatever it does during WOT to protect the compressor It really needs the AC running for it to not heat soak and keep the WTA coolant chilled My WTA coolant temps when just cruising is around 2°c
    • Hey Mark...sorry to interrupt your career change to hair dressing... but...did you ever fit the interchiller to the commodore, and if so how was it? And, who made it?
    • I've been pondering this, I really enjoy the convertible thing, for me, it's like riding a motorbike, without all the issue of riding a motorbike, mainly, my old sore arthritic joints getting beaten up, and, being able to do it in shorts and a T-shirt and not needing a helmet and all the other gear required, especially like wearing jackets and pants in the summer, or needing 6 layers of cloths in the winter, or not having wet weather gear handy when your 100km away from home on the bike when it decides to start raining As for the hard top and its Coupe look, whilst I do lose all that open top feeling that I really enjoy, from my experience with the NB with a detachable hard top, the cabin is a much nicer place to be, the difference in noise for one, a hard top quietens down the interior, alot, with the soft top up or down it's pretty noisy, which, after 5 or so hours, can get tiring But, as you stated, the detachable hard top totally changes the look of the car, in a really good way, and for me, the look of a detachable hard top is so much better than the PRHT which looks more like a after thought with its weird bulbous rear roof line For me, the minimal effort of putting in on, or storing it after removing it, is well worth the time and effort for the look alone And yes, I'm sure the next owner will be grateful for it as well.......
