rtune
I can get a brembo typhoon GT front and rear kit for ~$5000.. it has the same calipers and same rotor dia (355 front / 330 rear) as the r34 gran turismo brembo upgrade kit, which is ~$10000 now (or more). So does this mean the typhoon kit can be turned into an R34 kit, with four brackets, and different aluminum rotor center pieces? This 2006 topic says it may just be a case of custom brackets and a handbrake solution. http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/Fo...amp;mode=linear $5000 is a lot of incentive to get some brackets copied (which brembo won't sell). Roy
The Typhoon brakes use pistons far bigger then those sold in the F50 kit. From memory it is 48mm and 44mm , compared to the normal 44mm and 40mm. The rotors can have custom hats made and also custom mounts, but they will cost about $1000 min then you wll still need brake lines. So $6500 is a lot of money bt anything is possible. Frankly you can get Brembo F50 calipers for the fron for about $2500 and GTR rear calipers for about $800. Then go fishing for rotors and front brackets which means you will go close to getting the whoel setup for 5k Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/248460-adapting-brembo-gt-kit/#findComment-4310815 Share on other sites

The Gran turismo kit is currently $3200 USD for the front (355mm), so I don't think it can be had for much less than $4500 locally with the dollar now. And a similar for the rear. This is 6-pot mono for the front .. So that is getting on for $9000 aud even with discounts. (UAS list a monster package at over $10.5k (8 pot front 380mm) but that price is already out of date, it will be near to $12k now.) Yeah the stock R34 brembos can be found for $whatever, I already have those! I'd sell them and buy the typhoon set. But Roy thinks it sounds like trouble.. Roy
Really, so is that the latest Typhoon? BF or whatever its called? The FPV Falcons i have paid attention to ran 4 pots. FPV must be spending some biccies on brakes Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/248460-adapting-brembo-gt-kit/#findComment-4310915 Share on other sites

But there are deals out there for between 3.5k and 4.5k + shipping AP racing 6-pot 354mm disc (fronts only) Brembo F40/F50 kit 340mm disc (front only) Greddy/Alcon 6-pot 354mm (front only) Even with the poor yen good deals can still be found, but i would advise at tring to find disc locally as they can be heavy and do increase the shipping by afair amount. There are alot of options out their so i guess it comes down to if you want to buy a bolt-on kit or just buy the caliper and then get your own dog-bones made up Edited December 10, 2008 by [Michael] Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/248460-adapting-brembo-gt-kit/#findComment-4311192 Share on other sites
Ronin 09
The FPV 6-pot ft and 4-pot rr (option) is a good jigger... Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/248460-adapting-brembo-gt-kit/#findComment-4311541 Share on other sites
Ronin 09
Also, there are a number of considerations with trying to adapt the FPV gear to your 34... with enough $, you can do it. off the top of my head, these are some of the things you have to consider 1. will the front rotor offset (how far in or out it is, in relation to the hub) work on the skyline, and is the stud pattern the same? will the wheels clear the rotor and caliper, given this offset 2. will the rear rotor offset work? What will you do with the hand brake assembly? Adapt the FPV one, or run custom rotors and rear hats over the handbrake drum? 3. do I need custom brake lines make up to suit (probably likely) 4. will the caliper configuration work (be possible!) with the skyline front/rear knuckle assemblies? They may not physically fit! 5. what is the cost of custom hats and dogbones? Note that radial mount calipers are MUCH easier to make up brackets for, than lug mount (lug is what the factory brakes are, generally A/market are radial). My recollection of my hats were ~500 front pair, and ~250 for the brackets. 6. brake balance - will the skyline master cylinder be the right size to push the larger or smaller pistons? will i get a pedal with no travel, or lots of dead travel? that's just a start! I don't want to put you off trying it - i wanted to do this on my 32, as I could get some FPV stuff relatively cheaply - but in the end went with AP CP5555s front and factory 33GTR brembos at rear, with a larger rotor. The ultimate question is - $7K will get you a bolt on solution from stoptech; you'll probably at the end spend that on the FPV setup. Also, the FPV setup may not work, or be a lot of farking around to get working. hope that helps... rtune
hope that helps... Thanks, it does help. sounds like there are too many unknowns for a naive player.. race brakes sydney told me that they'd sting me for a grand a pair for custom brackets, then I'd have to buy dba rotors for the rear as well.. i am sure i could find the engineering for a lot less but you are right there are several traps along the way. AD4M
the brembos fitted the the FPV have removable dog bones much the same as any brembo you would purchase as a kit personaly i would look into buying new brembo or aftermarket rotors/hats and dog bones to suit the application and selling the ford dog bones and ford rotors obviously if the ofsets and mounts dont work out Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/248460-adapting-brembo-gt-kit/#findComment-4312825 Share on other sites
Scooby
i once purchased a Brembo GT-P 6 pot f / 4 pot r kit to do the same thing but moved it on. the offset of the GT-P brakes is very similar to the GTR offset, but the hub and stud holes are too large. then of course there is the cost of brackets, which at $1K for fronts seems a little high but comparable to quotes i've had that are equally, in my opinion, outrageous. tried getting GTR pattern DBA 5000s but it was like pulling teeth. the handbrake problem would not be easy to overcome either, custom hats is prob the only way. finally the the cost / hassle of adapting the kit and even then maybe having to stuff about with master cyl diam if there's too pedal travel just wasn't worth it. what you're being offered is really a steal for what it is - a great upgrade for a Ford. Holmart are selling VY/VZ AP front and rear kits complete (350mm f) for $3.5k. compared to what we are getting stung for GTR brakes it's amazing. as suggested use the R33 GTR rears and try to get some F40/50 fronts with suitable discs and adapters. those calipers can be picked up quite cheaply, why no one has produced a kit with suitable 355mm rotors and adapters so people can simply add their own calipers is beyond me given the demand for GTR brake upgrades and the availability of the F40/50 off the Fords and from o/s. suggested this to one large brake distributor but no interest, not surprising if people are readily paying $6k for AP fronts or $1k just for brackets. current economic climate may make them reconsider. stoptech looked perfect at one stage but i wasn't going to pay $3500 locally for a kit that was $2600US retail when the exchange rate was nearly 1:1. and company freight rates prob cost them $200. from what i can see they aren't selling many locally but neither are they dropping price. just al ittle too rich for me given that the distributor isn't paying retail either. sorry but my research has not revealed any really cost effective and worthwhile upgrades beyond using R33 GTR Brembos. there is the K-Sport brand that I understand is similar to G4 etc but with dust boots, which are a legal requirement for a street car and share parts sizes etc with some other brands. i haven't seen them used for any length of time so i have no idea if they are any good when it comes to durability or safety. cheers Edited December 13, 2008 by Scooby Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/248460-adapting-brembo-gt-kit/#findComment-4315428 Share on other sites

But yeah, everything else makes sense. Now with the exchange rate a full 355/355 stoptech kit for $7k from UAS is actually cheaper here than getting them in the US let alone adding in freight and fiddling the declaration to avoid gst. The k-sport/g4 kit seems to have worked out for several people. I'm leaning towards getting stoptech front only and then checking on a track day to see if the rears are still balanced to the work the fronts are doing. If they are overheating then I could try either a caliper offset kit and better rotors from biot, or the stoptech rear set to complete the setup. If they are overheating then I could try either a caliper offset kit and better rotors from biot, or the stoptech rear set to complete the setup. I spoke to Zeckhausen racing which is prob the largest S'tech agency in the US. They maintain that the S'tech fronts are perfectly balanced to the stock rears (and obviously S'tech rears) and warned me against using F50s, which they claim will upset the front / rear bias. The calcs I did comparing the AP6 piston and GTR Brembos showed not much difference to stock in terms of bias (which is not only piston area) and the small AP pistons suggest that this was intended to be the case. However the F50s showed significantly larger piston area and front bias. I think if you can get reasonably priced S'tech stuff then it's as good as anything else. Have you considered the Z33 rears at 322mm? Interestingly the bias was still front heavy when I compared them with the F50s. Scooby
i meant the complete set. can't say for sure they are a simple 'bolt on' as i've never tried them myself, however, for what they offer and the price they can be had for it's potentially an attractive option. also its the Z33 with Brembo calipers that you need to source, i doubt that making dog bones for an increase from 300 to 322 mm using the R33 Brembo would be fun (bolt holes too close) unless the lugs are extremely offset. Beer Baron
ronin 09 was looking at the Z33 rear upgrade but it's a bit of a pain in the arse from memory. in the end he bought a biot offset kit from me for his rears which comes with better/bigger rear rotors and new calliper mounts to position the calliper in the right spot. apparently even those are a little bit of work to fit.
