Wrapping mild steel pipes can shorten their life due to rust formation. This can be counteracted by adequate pre wrap preparation, ie cleaning and heatproof prime/paint the pipe first.

I don't know if the aluminium adhesive tape is effective as an only wrap, it is normally used only for joining and gap sealing.

wrapping the manifold should be effective... I've seen mine glowing almost white hot, I believe loosely bagging the turbo is better than trying to wrap it.

Although it is said to improve performance, as Sydneykid says... the main reason for wrapping is to reduce under bonnet heat.
