Well it seems that at my last outing to winton raceway my turbos decided that enough was enough.

so im now looking to upgrade a bit. the thing that im having trouble deciding weather to stick with the twins setup or to go big single...

if its going to be twins, im looking at the garret 2860-7's.

i want something that going to give me good power/torque, without sacrificing response. the car does see a bit of track work...

but ive always liked the idea of the single turbo with the external gate screamer (love the noise!!!).

has anyone got any suggestions on what i can go for?

cheers.

matty.

You know what, i was gonna go for the HKS gt-ss kit but with all the trouble from EPA today its best to for for garrett stuff because if you do wind up in a testing booth, they will only see the garrett logo and think its stock.

everyone so far is saying the -7's are the bomb for track and street + add some cams for a little extra top end and your there.

I wanted a big single sooooo badly for the gate and look but honestly, after my recent exhaust EPA im sick to death of dealing with all the bullshit so stick to the lowmounts.

Ummm have you even looked @ GT-SS turbos?

They only have Garrett markings on them, Garrett housings etc.

Fact. Ive seen them, i have them.

Either way, GT-SS are not affordable anymore with the yen the way it is.

-7's all the way. You don't need cams.

so it looks like im on the money then. :(

its currently got the N1's on it, with 20 psi of boost the car made 310kw at the rears. what sort of power should i expect to se out of the 2860-7's with similar or less boost?

a bit of a curley one i know but im just after a ball park figure. im hoping for about 350kw (bearing in mind im getting larger injectors done at the same time.). do you think im dreaming, and what size injectors should i go for?

cheers.

near enough to the same really, GT-SS make around 330rwkw or so.

Depends on the dyno more than anything.

The -5's (next step up) will make 350, but they are good for a bit more, but then you hurt response so thats where the question lies

it seems the that -7's are the go,

would 700cc injectors sufice, or would i need bigger?

also is it worth spending the extra money on cams as well, or will the good ol' standards do the job?

700cc is fine, and standard cams will work a treat ;)

NA - Not Applicable! :bunny:

As for you conrad... i suggest rather than buying really expensive STI parts to make your car something its not, just get the genuine article. or at least get a real car... you can only abuse an "STI enhanced" badge so much! :bunny:

Shepo - I would have brought an STi, but the bank was being a complete tightass that day!! And "Expensive" parts?? That's what I have you for!!! Full retail is for chumps... And who needs an STi motor... I have my SHARPIE TUNE to take care of that department!!!

But then again. Whose car is running...? Hmmmm?

  • 3 weeks later...

Just thought i would update for those who may be interested.

im going ahead with the 2860-7 turbo's. also sard 800cc injectors (probrobly overkill, but better safe than sorry in my opinion.) and lastley getting a trust stainless steel intake piping kit.

once done, should be good for a bit more power. :P

will keep you all posted as things progress along. let me know your thoughts.

cheers,

matty.

    • I refreshed the OEM injectors with the kit and connected it up. It now ideals okay even with the IACV removed. Driving still has the same cutoff issue like the 550cc injectors so the issue is somewhere else. I bought FPG's Fuel Pump Hanger. I will be installing it next, but it is not as straightforward as I thought it was with my limited wiring knowledge and no instruction on the specific model I purchased (FPG-089). I also got the incorrect billet clamp as I could not find info on the OEM sizing.
    • Stop looking at the garage floor, and turn the radio up a bit louder if there's any strange noises...
    • No. Turbo shuffle and surge/flutter are not the same thing. Specifically, on a GTR, turbo shuffle has a definite meaning. On a GTR, the twin turbos are assumed to be the same thing and to operate the same way, exactly. In reality, they do not. Their exhaust sides are fed and exhaust a little differently, to each other. Their inlet sides are fed and exhausted a little differently, to each other. Consequently, when they are "working" they are often at slightly different points on the compressor map compared to each other. What this means, particularly when coming on boost, is that one of them will spool up and start producing extra flow compared to the other, which will put back pressure on that other compressor, which will push the operating point on that other compressor up (vertically). This will generally result in it bumping up against the surge line on the map, but even if it doesn't, it upsets the compressor and you get this surging shuffle back and forth between them That is "turbo shuffle" on a GTR. It is related to other flutter effects heard on other turbo systems, but it is a particular feature of the somewhat crappy outlet piping arrangement on RB26s. There are plenty of mods that have been attempted with varying levels of success. People have ground out and/or welded more material into the twin turbo pipe to try to prevent it. Extending the divider inside it works, removing material doesn't. There are aftermarket replacement twin turbo pipes available, and these exist pretty mush purely because of this shuffle problem.
    • You can temporarily* use lock collars to keep it in place until you can do the bushes, back the nuts off, slide them in, snug back up. *temporarily is often for ever
    • Thanks for the quick reply. To be clear, when you say turbo shuffle do you mean turbo flutter "stustustu" or referring to something else? I had thought they were the same thing. When I wrote the post my intention was to say it wasn't a flutter/compression surge sound. My understanding was that a flutter sound would be occurring when throttle is released, whereas I can keep the throttle in the same position for this noise
