My R34 GTT with just 57,000 k on it has a weird gear oil smell that since i got it last january is driving me nuts, I get a gear oil smell coming inside the car at highway speeds with or without the windows open and sunroof open, or with or without a/c on ? seems to come up from gear stick area but I have taken the whole lot apart to see if the gasket has failed, and had Sinergy look at it 3 times under warranty, we dont see any leaks at all on any fluids? or burning of a oil on the cat or pipes under the car ?, no smoke , nothing at all just a stink of gear oil faintly in cabin

had the oils changed to synthetic about 10k ago, no leaks or anything else found? its the 5psd - RB25 engine

and its been doing it now for close to 15,000k but nothing leaking at all?Not even seeping on any seals?

my thought is it might be inside the bellhousing , the front input shaft seal leaking into the housing just a tiny bit , not enough to get on the clutch? the tranny-drivetrain whines a lot more then I would expect in a low K car thats not abused or hamfisted shifting? nothing is loose and sinergy hasnt got a clue either ? I think the tranny is close to dying , when I corner hard the gear noise sounds worse in the tranny area ?, like a main bearing is worn and the gears are sliding over due to the G force and torque , oil moving to one side of tranny, the gears dont grind since the oil was changed over and no metal parts were found in the oil or drain plug magnet?

another thought was a vent tube to the tranny is coming thru the vent in the firewall area , but havent gone on the hunt for the vent yet ? Sinergy thought it might be that?

the clutch still has about 6months before it goes away so not pulling it out to look yet ?

anyone else have any ideas or had it happen to them ?

I have gear oil smell in my 32. I think it is the boot on top of the gearbox that is either gone or ripped. The one in the car where the stick is is fine, will rip it off one day to see the lower boot. If it's gone it's a $25 part from Nissan from memory

yeah tried that, took it all apart nothing ripped and the seal wasnt torn on the gearbox top ? clean to he point of surface rust on the bolt heads, not a drop of oil at all.

thanks for the input, any other ideas?

forgot the R34 has a filter on the A/C might pull it out tomorrow for a peek at it ? prob disgusting original filth from osaka japan ? and a part nobody stocks..lol

You sure its not the smell of your passengers shitting themselves? :bunny:

Seriously tho, if there are no signs of any leaks anywhere in your engine bay, then its prob the air con letting off stink

my 25 box is doin the same thing, ive taken my box out twice now, to do clutch and replace forks and pivot ball etc... but i have no leaks and my breather hose is fine, and breather not blocked.... ive heard about this happening on a few skylines now.... for the moment it looks like something thats not fixable :D

checked the oil again , all good, and not a drop of anything under the car sure beats my old Oil leaking bitch of a VT commy, surprised green peace didnt defect that car for the oil spillages ......lol

tail pipe is still shiny stainless steel no oil burning marks on it

no power steering oil, A/C compressor oil or clutch, brake fluids either, it is distinct smell of gear oil you can't forget that lovely smell..lol and it doesnt smell burning , just faint fresh smell , and no its not on my floor mats either..lol

actually the car underside is spotless still, I power washed it to see if the oil was under it a few months ago.

never got to the A/C filter today  tomorrows project ..today went down hill with the EX wiff driving me insane. .lol

I guess one option is to extend the vent line to another location away from the cowl vents by the wipers

HMMMM ....be the passengers shitting themself...lol had one tonight beg to get out...lol guess thats what she gets for being drunk and bouncing around so much with the stiff suspension and a few roundabouts..lol, she hates the car !!!! oh well next time she can walk her drunk ass home from the pub then..lol

no patience for drunks being a bitch to me in the front seat, when I'm 100% sober..lol  Merry Christmas and dont let the door hit you in the ass when get out..lol sorry for venting..lol and yes she drives my R31 normally

    • A locally delivered Infiniti have remote start installed but don't come with the remote start key. You need a new remote start key and they just need it programed. And this is different to making/programing a new key that just starts the car.
    • Cheers, and cheers for sharing so much of the build and also sharing the glimpse of what turns out to bring a lot of us poor decision makers together haha.  I do recommend learning more about how to manage it, if not considering getting a  formal diagnosis.  The discussion with the psychiatrist I got my diagnosis through was quite eye opening, things I'd not even considered to be ADHD related and hadn't mentioned were things she asked about out of the blue and were common themes with people with my flavour of ADHD.   It's not a label for people who are hyperactive and ill-attentive, there's more to it than that and some of it can be much more challenging or damaging - though there are of course two sides to the thing, and a lot of the stuff we have to go through and work on to live with it make us effectively "better" at other things as well. Aside from the fact that there is some argument I could have a bit of ASD seasoning in there (came up during the diagnosis, and neurodiverse things seem to not stay as a cookie cut) I suspect you need to learn more about ADHD if you are puzzled about how hyperfocus could possibly apply.  I *do* personally use "superpower" with quotes deliberately, but it's 100% an ADHD thing due to the exact reason that lack of focus is also an ADHD thing... Loosely speaking the inattentive side of ADHD isn't the inability to focus, it's the inability to control where the focus goes.  Not being able to sleep because brain is more interested in thinking about a stupid thing I said to a girl I liked 30 years ago, not being able to focus on work because my brain is more keen on putting together the torque management strategy we're going to try out with a drag car next weekend, not being able to focus on a conversation with someone I WANT to listen to and respect because there is a flickering light in my peripheral vision.    If I could just stop work and build the torque management setup right there and then I'd not hear anything else until it was done.
    • Maybe you should do some more reading.  Google positive effects of ADHD and you'll get your answers.  One of my personal downsides of ADHD has been talking before I think.   Maybe you have it too?
    • Excuse me for butting in....but which part of ADHD can be considered a superpower? I would have though it far more likely that some ASD comorbidity is more likely to be contributing to an ability to hyperfocus on something. ADHD being aimed somewhat in the other direction. My shed looks like your shed. My whiteboard list of unfinished projects has entries going back 15 years. I know what you're talking about - I just struggle to connect ADHD to the results being discussed.
    • Thanks for reaching out!  It's a blessing and a curse at the same time.  I'm undiagnosed but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see it in me... I have more half started projects laying around my house, shed, garden, etc taking up space and money, destroying aesthetics than if I added up all of my mates projects together. But, ADHD gives me the ability to hyper focus on things that no mere mortal could even  comprehend.  A recent pool build is an example of that....  I dont know anyone else that would be dumb enough and focused enough to take on then complete something of that magnitude. I call ADHD a superpower but it can equally be completely destructive if not controlled and focusedon the right places. Addiction is a major concern to ADHD people and thankfully my addictions have been no worse than projects, XBOX, chocolate and being an arsehole! It's often hereditary and my 13 year old son is currently learning how to drive it at the moment. Keep lurking! If i can finally finish this bloody thing at some point it will be a win for all of us ADHD'ers! 🤪
