Hi guys,

Ive got an question. I got an oil cooler kit with filter relocation kit from autobahn installed on my r33 gtst spec2. This kit is installed by the garage which imported the skyline to Holland (from japan)

Last monday I wanted to take my skyline for a spin to the gym but when I started the car I heard a strange sound, blop blop blop blop, like something was bobbeling. My first reaction was look at the coolant liquid. So I popped the hood and take a look. Nothing to see, I turned of the engine and when I stepped out of the car there was a pool of oil coming underneath the car.

When I checked the engine oil it was al run out..

So I jacked up the car to inspect the bottom and after a minute or 2 I could see where the drips came from.

I was shocked to see the sandwichplate (wich is on the place of the old oil filters position) was loose!!!!

When I felt it wasn’t tight, and it just came of..

So the plate was pushed of and the engine had just pumped 5 ltr of oil onto my drive way K

My first thought is this may never ever ever happen right?

How could this be? Crappy quality of autobahn? Or a fitment that was to big for a RB25det engine?

I orderd a original oil filter to test the thread on the oil filter housing. If the filter fits and stays on it’s the plate that was crap, but if the filter also decides to not get tighten ive got a big problem, then my original oil filter housing thread is F#@( up!!.

But either way this is caused by wrong installation, I don’t have another explaination.

A part like that should never pop off like that..

Im lucky it happened on my driveway and not on the highway, because that would have meant bringing the engine to the dump…

Whats your opinion on this?

it's a combination of 2 things.

1, cheap ebay/chinese oil cooler kit. they are no good, usually the lines are too long, the fittings are cheap and need extrodinary amounts of force to seal, the o-rings are often bad quality and/or ill fitting and often surfaces are not machined perfectly flat and internal construction of the core is often sub par. but that's the risk you take when buying cheap parts. in this case they are half the price of a quality greddy kit because they are about half as good.

2, the people fitting didn't take account of that. they fitted it as though it was a quality bolt on japanese part which requires no modification or stuffing around. almost always with the chinese parts there is some modification needed, or extra parts or something else required for a functional installation.

I just hope it didn't damage your engine, because that would be a very expensive way to learn about the quality problems of chinese oil cooler kits. :D

most likely it will need a different o-ring, or the mating surface may need to be machined flat. something like that. or it could possibly have just not been tight.

so got an pitwork original filter this morning, ran to the car and try to fit it (with my fingers crossed)..

put it on, turn turn turn.... :worship: fits perfectly... glad about that.

so the thread on the oil filter bracket cant be damaged and it is indeed a crap sandwichplate wich doenst fit right.

going to get some oil today and fill her up again.

disconnect the ignition, and crank her a couple of times (just as long till the oil lamp on the dash goes out?)

Actually I have heard of the sandwich plates supplied with the chinese kits being dodgy. I think there was a thread a few months back describing something similar. I suggest try a new sandwich plate :worship:
