bugger... failed EPA test by 4db

Recommended Posts

I got cat back HKS Super Dragger, it has 1 small muffler and 1 resonator in the middle pipe. However I have to change my blitz bov to std bov before the exhaust test done, as the tester said that after market bov will not pass EPA noise test.

HKS Super Dragger II is fine.. That is the system that I've got. Mine was fine at 89db and passed, and i think it was on 10psi at the time. Full 3.5" system with a big 5" tip.. all fine, weird .. doesn't look any different to any muffler out there.

p.s. if you have a big turbo, that should even pass as long as you wind the boost right down.

yeah... boost controller was off so 0.6bar would have been the max it would have been pushing and as it spools up late in the rev range there was probably no boost there anyway. Maybe the guy at the place i went to Daalder Exhausts didn't set it up right. How far away from the exhaust is it meant to be and at what angle?

i disconnected my bov altogether...

Hey guys, i'm in a similar situation, i got done at 96.5dB the other night, and slapped with a bloody fine. they've told me i need to get an inspection to clear it, but they didn't check under my hood, of which contains an aftermarket BOV and a Pod filter. does anyone know if this will also effect me getting the inspection? also, how dodgy is the steel wool in the muffler trick? i don't want to have to change the bloody muffler, i just bought the car.

I took my car to an Exhaust Place, not the actual EPA testing place. The guy that did the inspection didn't worry about the Pod filter or BOV (my bov is hidden in the front bumper). Never done the steel wool in the muffler trick. I'm gonna get a center pipe made up that's full of resonators/mufflers that i use just for when i get EPA'd (cos my new exhaust is gonna be loud). If your only gonna keep the car for a year then it's probably not worth it, but it's an option.

When i was rallying 1600's we used to have a couple of holes in the tailpipe so we could sick steel wool in and put a bit of wire behind it to stop it coming out at the wrong moment during scrutineering :) then we would drive round the corner, take out the wire and blip the throttle to spit the wool. Don't know the answer for a 3" or 3 1/2" tho

GiJOr33 - changing exhaust is pretty easy. I had to do it on my gravel drive way with only the normal skyline jack.

Took about 30mins like that flat on my back.. hardest bit was lifting it up to get the hooks out.

Also, one idea I had for a temporary silencer is to unbolt your exhaust at the cat and make a metal plate that matches the shape of the flange, drill holes in it and bolt it all back up. I would say that the exhaust place would have no idea and if they looked it would just look like the gasket in there.

    • Thanks for your insight, it being basically useless will impact my decision for sure. I thought it may help the engine breath better I guess. But then again, I have also been told that tuning an RB20DE is also not worth it. Exactly, we follow EU Regulations. There is a bit more leeway on older vehicles. My Porsche 924 came without a cat from factory and managed to pass, they still mentioned that I have quite high emissions on it though.
    • My apologies, I stand corrected. Thanks for registering to mention this! And thank you for actually reaching out to the council to clarify. This is the sensible thing to do and the opposite of what I was alluding you were doing. I may have seen too much outrage and hate being fueled on the internet and it has made me a somewhat cynical old man. Sometimes it is easy to forget that there are real people behind websites and accounts. In my defence, CarExpert and CarExplore do read quite similarly at a glance. I shall try and do better in the future. (Please stick around to get the latest scoops on dealing with old Nissan shitboxes )
    • Don't bother. The poor little RB20 doesn't make enough gas flow to challenge the flow capabilities of even the littlest cat, and you won't make any extra power, and all you'll do it soot up your rear bumper. Plus....is Malta not runing under Euro regs?
    • Hey Daniel, sorry to hear that and thanks for posting up for us at a really hard time I only knew SmoothLine through the forums, we never met as we are based in different states, but when he was most active on here he was quite a while back so not many of the current crowd might remember him. I am pretty sure he was active in the Queensland SQU club but that is defunct now too (times are changing and we are all getting older). Farewell SmoothLine!
    • Turns out depending on whether the car was equipped with TCS or not there are different signals coming to the dash, meaning there are different speedo clusters.  Wired in a speedo calibrator box from aliexpress and now works fine.
